Book excerpt: It is 1827, winter is fast approaching and Rocky Mountain life is getting ready for the big freeze and the great snows. Wild animals find the presence of human hunters annoying, disturbing their own hunting routines. It quickly becomes a struggle for territorial rights, whether it be a mountain lion, a grizzly bear or a wolf pack, domination is key to surviving in the high mountain ranges. In this story, the sixth volume of the Sam Ogden Mountain Man Series, young Sam and his Mandan wife, Little Fire are making a home for themselves in a cabin high in the Rockies. Along with their partner Clyde Patterson, the young couple will have to face the challenges to their survival from renegade Indians, outlaws, cougars, bears and wolves. The Rocky Mountain Cabin is their story, their adventure. The Mountain Man Rendezvous of 1827 took place in the Rocky Mountains at Popo Aggie. Once again, Sam Ogden and his partner Clyde Patterson were there for the tournaments that year: Hatchet Throwing, Knife Throwing and the Long Rifle Shoot. Tragedy had struck the last day of the Rendezvous when four mountain men tried to rape Sam's wife, the Mandan woman, Little Fire. That was a pain that would be a long time healing. At the Rendezvous, Sam and Clyde were offered the use of a mountain cabin in the Flattop range on the southwest flank of the Rockies. Big Bill Davis had built the cabin several years earlier and insisted that he wasn't going to be using it this winter. They took him up on his offer and headed south toward Grand Junction, Colorado Territory. In this sixth volume of the Sam Ogden Mountain Man Series, "Rocky Mountain Cabin," Sam, his wife and his partner Clyde Patterson settle in for the winter season of 1827. It will be a winter hard to forget. The Sam Ogden Series is as follows: 1.Hard to Kill 2.Winter Down 3.Rendezvous Prize 4.The Deerslayer's Destiny 5.Sam, My Warrior 6.Rocky Mountain Cabin

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Log Cabin Studies: The Rocky Mountain Cabin, Log Cabin Technology and Typology, Log Cabin Bibliography Log cabins in the United States have generally been described as side-gabled dwellings with doors in the front and sometimes rear walls with a fireplace centered along a gabled wall. While this description is valid for cabins in much of the eastern United States, a cabin type appearing in Idaho is, in many ways, quite different. Orientation of the structure is changed so that the gable ends of the cabin face to the front and rear. A single door is usually off-centered in the front wall of the cabin with an iron stove replacing the fireplace along a gable wall. The most distinc tive feature of this cabin is the frontward extension of the gabled roof, 25 to 100 percent of the length of the cabin, which forms a covered porch or work area (figure l). The first aim of this project is to describe this cabin type-to define its architectural. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cabins in the Laurel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Muriel Earley Sheppard
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2014-03-19
  • ISBN : 1469620774
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Cabins in the Laurel written by Muriel Earley Sheppard and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-03-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1928 New York native Muriel Earley Sheppard moved with her mining engineer husband to the Toe River Valley -- an isolated pocket in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge and Iron Mountains. Sheppard began visiting her neighbors and forming friendships in remote coves and rocky clearings, and in 1935 her account of life in the mountains -- Cabins in the Laurel -- was published. The book included 128 striking photographs by the well-known Chapel Hill photographer, Bayard Wootten, a frequent visitor to the area. The early reviews of Cabins in the Laurel were overwhelmingly positive, but the mountain people -- Sheppard's friends and subjects -- initially felt that she had portrayed them as too old-fashioned, even backward. As novelist John Ehle shows in his foreword, though, fifty years have made a huge difference, and the people of the Toe River Valley have been among its most affectionate readers. This new large-format edition, which makes use of many of Wootten's original negatives, will introduce Sheppard's words and Wootten's photography to a whole new generation of readers -- in the Valley and beyond.
