Book excerpt: Escape the matrix of student loan debt In his new book, Dave Shutler analyzes twelve faulty assumptions about obtaining a higher education and shows how they can lead to debilitating college debt. Analogizing to the two realities in the Matrix movies, he reveals underlying facts about the assumptions to high schoolers and their parents. These assumptions range from deciding whether to attend college in the first place, to the importance of selecting a major, to how to minimize college living costs. This book is a systematic guide to the many misconceptions that students hold in the college application process. Shutler analyzes each misconception, showing how it can lead to debt, and then provides strategies to escape that debt. Dave Shutler sheds light on scholarships and other significant funding sources that are available for the enterprising student and explores the federal laws that govern student debt. He identifies underlying policy decisions that have contributed to the $1.7 trillion federal debt burden and offers several strategies to help individuals navigate student debt without succumbing to it. Through planning, students can take charge of their education and escape the matrix of ever-increasing college costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shadow grows; the claws are out. It is the twenty-fourth century, and humanity has successfully breached beyond their limited solar system to colonize much of the known galaxy. Mostly located within the Orion Arm of the Milky Way, humanity has ventured into a prosperous and ever-expanding era of exploration and discovery, with several other new races joining one of powers in humanity's growing sphere of influence, either willingly or by force. However, mankind cannot escape the shadow of conflict that dared to follow them out beyond the stars. In the immediate aftermath of the Earthborn War between two galactic superpowers--the oppressive far-reaching-based Hagorian Alliance and the more egalitarian-minded and Earth-based Praetorian League--one young girl rises from the ashes of chaos to break the yoke of oppression that the tyrannical Alliance has leaned upon to enforce its rule over its section of the cosmos. While other nations exist, they are constantly and often caught in the crossfire between the Alliance and the League. The Alliance, based at the trailing ends of the Orion Arm, valued slavery, fear, and subjugation to control and rule its people. The League, while not ideal, was far more egalitarian if not apathetic. But for citizens of the Alliance, many had had enough. One girl was chosen by fate to be the leader of these dissidents whom the Alliance would classify as militant rebels outright, viewing them as little more than vermin that need to be extinguished. From being an owned slave to a warrior and rebel leader, to empress and conqueror, this is part of the legacy that Ava'kra hopes to forge, but in the brutal maelstrom of seemingly unending war, can she? When facing betrayal at every turn, fighting outnumbered and outmaneuvered, can a young girl forge a new galactic nation free of oppression and live to tell the tale?

Book The Best Book On Elite Admissions Former Stanford Admissions Officer s Plan For Select College Admissions

Download or read book The Best Book On Elite Admissions Former Stanford Admissions Officer s Plan For Select College Admissions written by Erinn Andrews and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Applying to college is likely the most stressful and important moment in a teenager's academic life. Pressure from friends, family, teachers, and oneself add up to make this an overwhelming process to go through, especially for students applying to the nation's most selective schools. One major reason for this stress is the uncertainty of the application process. Often, the students who apply to top schools are used to feeling in control of their lives and planning their future, but because there are no sure admittances in elite admissions, the feeling of helplessness can be overwhelming. There are a number of resources available to students who wish to maximize their chances of admission; however, I, as a former admission officer at a selective university, feel that many are misleading. In some cases, the advice given is very specific to one school which isn't useful for the majority of students or it's too vague. And in some other cases, students try to compare their statistics with the statistics of other seemingly similar students to gauge their chances of admission, perhaps the worst resource of all. MEET THE AUTHOR Erinn Andrews is the former Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Stanford University. She read and evaluated thousands of applications from the US, as well as more than 70 countries around the world, and through that, she has developed a unique perspective on what it takes to get into the nation's elite colleges. She completed an M.A. in Education at Stanford University's School of Education in the Policy, Organization, and Leadership Studies Program. She also earned a B.A. in History with Honors at Stanford. She now works with students to help them uncover their intellectual and personal interests and present the best version of themselves in the elite admissions process. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The purpose of the application in selective admissions is to understand the context from which the applicant is coming. In order to decide which students to admit when admit rates are so low ( Once the context has been established, then the admission officer tries to find out if the student has taken advantage of the opportunities available to him and has either: a.) made a lasting impact in his community in some way, or b.) has the potential to make a lasting impact in his future community (college and beyond). Despite popular belief, every application is actually read in its entirety by an admission officer in the selective admissions process.

Book excerpt: He had a crippling case of love at first sight. Chrissie Edwards was a billionaire’s daughter and everything about her screamed “The Next It Girl”. Being around her was nothing short of being accompanied by royalty. She handled herself like a purebred debutante, and she always looked the part. Though Chrissie was unlike any one person he had ever met. Approaching Chrissie had identical pressure as to going to a cotillion. She was complex, smarter than you or I will ever give her credit for. She excelled in every avenue, and that too helped him in many ways. Together they went all the places he dreamt of. They caused frenzy at every outing. Every moment they spent together was dipped in gold, but so were their lies. They were outlived by those fables. The half-truths that they foolishly told themselves had a longer lasting impact than anything else they accomplished.

An incredible resource!”—Clint and Penny A. Bragg, Authors of Marriage on the Mend—Healing Your Relationship After Crisis, Separation, or Divorce and founders, Inverse Ministries “In Don’t Go To Bed Angry. Stay Up and Fight, Deb and Ron DeArmond deliver a biblically-based book on the topic of marital conflict. Practical exercises will help the reader move away from the potential damage conflict can bring to the discovery that comes from learning to stand together as allies not enemies—even when you don’t see eye-to-eye. We highly recommend this book as a creative guide for any couple, at any stage of life to find alignment with one another—and God—in their marriage.”—Claudia & David Arp, Co-authors, 10 Great Dates to Energize Your Marriage and founders of Marriage Alive International. "Don’t Go to Bed Angry has a solid Biblical foundation and is full of wise counsel and great practical tools. Deb and Ron are open and honest as they share from their experiences and those of others. I have been counseling couples for over thirty years, and this great, new title goes immediately to the top of my list of books on how to deal with conflict in marriage and grow your marriage God’s way." —Kim Kimberling, PhD, author of Seven Secrets to an Awesome Marriage and the leader of the Awesome Marriage Movement. “When my sons were teenagers, they often argued. Finally one day, I sat them on our couch and said, "I'm going to teach you how to fight." They were shocked. They thought they were experts. I gave a couple of steps to keep their arguments respectful and to help them own their own feelings. In their book, the DeArmonds have set us all down on their own couch and given us the principles to do right what we probably all do, and do wrong. These principles work! The sooner you start, the sooner you reap the benefits.” —Joann Cole Webster, Vice President, Christian Men's Network “In our work with couples in crisis for twenty years we have seen the value of having conflict resolution skills. "Fights"--loud and silent--can become long lasting wars with much devastation. In Don’t Go To Bed Angry, Deb and Ron give us a pattern to develop essential skills to resolve inevitable marital conflict. Read this book and let God guide the application to your marriage. Then you can begin the "fight for" your marriage. It's so worth it!”—Mona Shriver, author of Unfaithful and co-founder of Hope & Healing Ministries. Praise for author Deb DeArmond and her previous book, I Choose You Today: 31 Choices to Make Love Last "It's often been said that our choices define us. That's true personally, but it's also a key to our relationships. Deb DeArmond has provided a practical and insightful book detailing 31 choices we can make as husbands and wives that have the potential to transform even a good marriage—and make it a great one." —Greg Smalley, Vice President of Family Ministry, Focus on the Family
