Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled just south of the North and South Carolina border lies Rock Hill, a city whose name echoes the voices of the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad workers in the 1850s. When the rail crews discovered a stony hill, the name for the area was given. From its meager beginnings as a railroad community, Rock Hill has blossomed into one of South Carolina's largest municipalties. With Charlotte less than 30 miles away, Rock Hill has the unique ability to offer big-city opportunities with the personal touches so characteristic of America's less populous areas. For 150 years, Rock Hill has been honored as a valuable locale in the South. Because the early town centered around the railways, travelers and industry arrived soon after. In 1895 the institution now known as Winthrop University relocated from Columbia, South Carolina to Rock Hill, and the city secured its reputation for being devoted to education. In its lifetime, Rock Hill has been home to many notable individuals, including nationally recognized artists and writers. Its cultural opportunities still abound, both in conjunction with the university and as straightforward community efforts, as well as through various museums, historic districts, and springtime festivals.

Download or read book Rock Hill South Carolina written by J. Edward Lee and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the lush northern Piedmont region, Rock Hill strays from the traditional identity associated with South Carolina, where the prevailing images consist of antebellum estates, plantation societies, smoldering Civil War landscapes, and countrysides dominated by cotton. While Rock Hill shares many of these scenes and has been shaped by this history, the city, infused with a "New South" spirit, has grown and developed differently than most other of the Palmetto State's towns. In Rock Hill: Gateway to the New South, you will take a step back into the Rock Hill of yesteryear, when life was a little simpler and this small town was making its first steps into becoming one of the state's primary industrial centers. This volume contains both vivid images of Rock Hill's past and a selection of personal histories from a wide variety of citizens, from its Catawba roots to its African-American heritage. Throughout, you will be reminded of a place and time becoming increasingly foreign to today's generations, when lazy Saturday afternoons were spent playing fox and hounds, hop scotch, and gloveless baseball, when doors, both car and home, were left unlocked, and when the week was measured by the social calendar's local parties and dances. Besides these romantic scenes of small-town life, Rock Hill contains compelling stories detailing the devastation of storms, the tense emotions and sacrifices surrounding homefront Rock Hill during wartimes, the excitement of early businesses moving into the area, and the bidding struggle and birth of the city's proudest educational achievement, Winthrop University.

Download or read book The Cook the Crook and the Real Estate Tycoon written by Liu Zhenyun and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cook, the Crook, and the Real Estate Tycoon, by prize-winning Chinese novelist Liu Zhenyun is a novel of Beijing that paints a microcosm of contemporary China, dealing with classes at the two extremes: the super rich and the migrant workers who make them rich through deceit and corruption. The protagonist, Liu Yuejin, is a work site cook and small-time thief whose bag is stolen. In searching for it he stumbles upon another bag, which contains a flash disk that chronicles high-level corruption, and sets off a convoluted chase. There are no heroes in this scathing, complex, and highly readable critique of the dark side of China’s predatory capitalism, corruption, and the plight of the underclasses. A movie adaptation and TV series appeared in 2008 in China. Download or read book State of the Art Orthodontics E Book written by Hugo Trevisi and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The provision of high-quality treatment with good aesthetic outcomes and shorter treatment times are important goals for all practising orthodontists. To facilitate these objectives, the availability of aesthetic appliances with low friction levels together with the introduction of orthodontic mini-screws have allowed faster and more efficient treatment with reduced side effects. The use of contemporary aesthetic appliances and mini-screws also negates the problems seen regarding patient compliance - which can be particularly problematic with adolescents and adults who are reluctant to use head-gear and traditional intra-oral devices. Authored by experts of international renown, Contemporary Orthodontics: Self-Ligating Appliances, Mini-Screws and Second Molars Extraction addresses these issues and is lavishly illustrated to clearly describe the diagnosis and treatment planning of Class II and III malocclusion and the use of second molar extraction. The book particularly explores the use of the ClarityTM Self-Ligating appliance, a device which contains all of the essential features of SmartClipTM but which - by possessing improved aesthetic properties - also demonstrates greater patient acceptability and hence improvement in compliance. Contemporary Orthodontics: Self-Ligating Appliances, Mini-Screws and Second Molars Extraction is ideal for practicing orthodontists both qualified and in training. - Authored by experts of international renown - Lavish use of colour photography and artwork helps explain new concepts clearly - Demonstrates the effective use of the ClarityTM Self-Ligating appliance, a device which contains all of the essential features of SmartClipTM but which also demonstrates greater patient acceptability and hence improvement in compliance - Explains treatment options that show more predictable outcomes, good performance sliding biomechanics, the application of low force levels and reduced treatment times - Ideal for orthodontists worldwide – whether qualified or in training

Download or read book Stories of Struggle written by Claudia Smith Brinson and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study of the long and arduous struggle for civil rights in South Carolina, longtime journalist Claudia Smith Brinson details the lynchings, beatings, bombings, cross burnings, death threats, arson, and venomous hatred that black South Carolinians endured—as well as the astonishing courage, devotion, dignity, and compassion of those who risked their lives for equality. Through extensive research and interviews with more than one hundred fifty civil rights activists, many of whom had never shared their stories with anyone, Brinson chronicles twenty pivotal years of petitioning, preaching, picketing, boycotting, marching, and holding sit-ins. Participants' use of nonviolent direct action altered the landscape of civil rights in South Carolina and reverberated throughout the South. These firsthand accounts include those of the unsung petitioners who risked their lives by supporting Summerton's Briggs v. Elliot, a lawsuit that led to the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision; the thousands of students who were arrested and jailed in 1960 for protests in Rock Hill, Orangeburg, Denmark, Columbia, and Sumter; and the black female employees and leaders who defied a governor and his armed troops during the 1969 hospital strike in Charleston. Brinson also highlights contributions made by remarkable but lesser-known activists, including James M. Hinton Sr., president of the South Carolina Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Thomas W. Gaither, Congress of Racial Equality field secretary and scout for the Freedom Rides; Charles F. McDew, a South Carolina State College student and co-founder of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee; and Mary Moultrie, grassroots leader of the 1969 hospital workers' strike. These intimate stories of courage and conviction, both heartbreaking and inspiring, shine a light on the progress achieved by nonviolent civil rights activists while also revealing white South Carolinians' often violent resistance to change. Although significant racial disparities remain, the sacrifices of these brave men and women produced real progress—and hope for the future.

Download or read book UFOs Over Reston written by Richard Nielsen and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-12-12 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story about a practical joke that got out of hand. The practical joke involves building and launching flying saucers that are each about the size of a small car. Every person is quirky in their own way. I build flying saucers in my garage and fly them so people can look up in the sky and wonder, "what the hell is that?" People may also wonder, "What kind of idiot would do such a thing?" so the book covers some of my background as well. Weird things happen to all of us, and this is a collection of the things I have experienced that made me laugh. As I was preparing to build my first flying saucer, I checked the internet to see how other people had done this prank and I was surprised that no one had documented having done something similar. So I am either a pioneer in the field of UFO pranks or-as my wife contends-I am the first person stupid enough to admit to doing it. Either way there is some information here that you will not find anywhere else.
