Book excerpt: In addition to its well-known associations with doctors and diagnoses, the city of Rochester offers a string of curiosities to those willing to look closely. How did a secret bomber mission to Moscow during World War II lead to thousands of fighter planes flying through Rochester and the subsequent construction of a giant IBM manufacturing plant here? What was Rochester's contribution to the 1980 Olympic Hockey "Miracle on Ice"? Who was dubbed the "Greatest Doctor in the World", and why? Who were the regular folks without whom the great Mayo Clinic might never have become a medical mecca? Rochester Stories: A Med City History Paul Scanlon answers these and other questions in this enlightening and sometimes humorous study of Rochester's past.

Book Out of Place

  • Author : Ian Baucom
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1999-01-25
  • ISBN : 140082303X
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Out of Place written by Ian Baucom and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1968 speech on British immigration policy, Enoch Powell insisted that although a black man may be a British citizen, he can never be an Englishman. This book explains why such a claim was possible to advance and impossible to defend. Ian Baucom reveals how "Englishness" emerged against the institutions and experiences of the British Empire, rendering English culture subject to local determinations and global negotiations. In his view, the Empire was less a place where England exerted control than where it lost command of its own identity. Analyzing imperial crisis zones--including the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Morant Bay uprising of 1865, the Amritsar massacre of 1919, and the Brixton riots of 1981--Baucom asks if the building of the empire completely refashioned England's narratives of national identity. To answer this question, he draws on a surprising range of sources: Victorian and imperial architectural theory, colonial tourist manuals, lexicographic treatises, domestic and imperial cricket culture, country house fetishism, and the writings of Ruskin, Kipling, Ford Maddox Ford, Forster, Rhys, C.L.R. James, Naipaul, and Rushdie--and representations of urban riot on television, in novels, and in parliamentary sessions. Emphasizing the English preoccupation with place, he discusses some crucial locations of Englishness that replaced the rural sites of Wordsworthian tradition: the Morant Bay courthouse, Bombay's Gothic railway station, the battle grounds of the 1857 uprising in India, colonial cricket fields, and, last but not least, urban riot zones.

The story-telling started when a friend’s daughter asked if she had any good stories about her and her mother growing up together. Her mother had just passed away, and any story would be a comfort to her. After writing a few stories for her, Gail thought maybe she would write a few more to hand down to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She didn’t know if they would be interested but thought it would be good for them to know what life was like when she was growing up and how different it was from their lives today. Gail spent the last few years of her life writing and rewriting her stories even though her eye sight was failing due to macular degeneration.

Book Posthumous Lives

  • Author : Bette London
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2022-04-15
  • ISBN : 1501762370
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Posthumous Lives written by Bette London and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Posthumous Lives explores the shifting significance of public and private efforts to commemorate British soldiers killed in World War I—as well as the less well-remembered casualties of the war, including Voluntary Aid Detachments, nurses, conscientious objectors, civilians, and soldiers executed for desertion or cowardice—and the compelling hold the First World War has had on the British imagination for more than a century. By using the concept of the posthumous life—the attempt to extend the presence of the dead into the lives of the living—Bette London demonstrates how this idea came to shape Britain's First World War memory practices and rituals. London draws on a diverse range of source materials—from sentimental memorabilia books commissioned by bereaved families and canonical works of literature and art by Virginia Woolf, Wilfred Owen, and Sir Edwin Lutyens to centenary memorials and commemorative art installations—to uncover the surprising connections between memorialization practices, war writing, and modernism. Spanning the century from the middle of World War I to its centenary celebrations, Posthumous Lives illuminates, in a deeply moving narrative, how the dead are remembered to meet the shifting needs of the living.
