Book excerpt: Cognitive radio refers to the technology that the devices can intelligently access unused frequency resources which are originally reserved for legacy services in order to increase the spectrum utilization. At the mean time, the legacy services should not be affected by the access of cognitive radio devices. The common problems in cognitive radio are how to find unused frequency resources (spectrum sensing) and how to access them (spectrum accessing). This dissertation focuses on the robust methods of spectrum sensing as well as spectrum accessing strategies with the statistics of channel availabilities. The first part of the thesis studies non-parametric robust hypothesis testing problem to eliminate the effect of the uncertainty and instability introduced by non-stationary noise, which is constantly observed in communication systems. An empirical likelihood ratio test with density function constraints is proposed. This test outperforms many popular goodness-of-fit tests, including the robust Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the Cramér-von Mises test, etc. Examples using spectrum sensing data with real-world noise samples are provided to show their performance. The second part focuses on channel idle time distribution based spectrum accessing strategies. Through the study of the real-world wireless local area network traffic, it is identified that the channel idle time distribution can be modeled using hyper-exponential distribution. With this model, the performance of a single cognitive radio, or the secondary user, is studied when the licensed user, or the primary user, does not react to interference. It is also shown that with the complete information of the hyper-exponential distribution, the secondary user can achieve a desirable performance. But when the model exhibits uncertainty and time non-stationarity, which would happen for any kind of wireless traffic, the secondary user suffers from huge performance loss. A strategy that is robust to the uncertainty is proposed. The performance of this strategy is demonstrated using experimental data. Another aspect of the problem is when the PU is reactive. In this case, a spectrum accessing strategy is devised to avoid large-duration interference to the PU. Additionally, the spectrum accessing strategies are also extended to the cognitive radio networks with multiple secondary users. A decentralized MAC protocol is devised which reaches a total secondary capacity performance close to the optimal. A discussion of the engineering aspects with practical consideration of spectrum sensing and accessing is given at the end.

Cognitive radio is a key technology to improve spectrum utilization. A major challenge in cognitive radio networks is spectrum sensing, which detects if a spectrum band is being used by a primary user. Spectrum sensing plays a critical role in cognitive radio networks. However, spectrum sensing is vulnerable to security attacks from malicious users. In this dissertation, we propose a malicious user detection scheme, a density based SSDF detection scheme, a conjugate prior based SSDF detection scheme, and an anti-jamming algorithm to achieve robust and secure cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. Performance analysis and simulation results show that our proposed schemes can achieve very good performance in detecting malicious users, excluding abnormal sensing reports, and defending the jamming attack, thus improve spectrum sensing performance in cognitive radio networks.

As the cooperation among the secondary users increases the detection performance increases, which increases the average channel throughput and energy efficiency but it depends on the number of cooperative secondary users, fusion rules, channel conditions and detection threshold. In this thesis average channel throughput, energy consumption and energy efficiency are estimated for variable number of secondary users and detection thresholds using hard fusion rules i.e. AND, OR and MAJORITY fusion rules. From the results it has been observed that the performance of AND fusion rule is better at low detection thresholds and for less number of secondary users. The performance of OR fusion rule is better at high detection thresholds and for large number of secondary users. The performance of MAJORITY fusion rule follows the performance of AND fusion rule at low detection thresholds and it follows the performance of OR fusion rule at high detection thresholds. However as the number of cooperative secondary users increases the energy required for spectrum sensing and reporting sensing results to the fusion center increases, which increases the energy consumption and reduces the energy efficiency. Therefore energy efficiency can be improved by maximizing the average channel throughput or by minimizing the energy consumption. To minimize the energy consumption in cooperative spectrum sensing, optimization technique has been proposed in this thesis and it is used for further improvement of energy efficiency. With this optimization technique, optimal number of cooperative secondary users are derived by maximizing the energy efficiency using AND and OR fusion rules but not with MAJORITY fusion rule. Because it is very difficult to estimate the optimal number of cooperative secondary users using MAJORITY fusion rule, so optimization of final decision threshold was proposed in the existing methods to maximize the energy efficiency using MAJORITY fusion rule. Therefore AND and OR fusion rules are used in this work to optimize the number of cooperative secondary users.

In multi-taper spectrum sensing, regular detection of unused spectrum holes is performed to make cognitive radio networks aware of users' ctivities. As a result, more effective spectrum management is expected and unlicensed users could use unused spectrum holes. In this thesis, an analytical study was proposed in which reliable, simple, and computationally efficient mathematical expressions for the mean and variance of the probability density function (PDF) of the multitaper spectrum sensing techniques were derived. The proposed analytical study was evaluated by intensive simulations using MATLAB. The presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise is assumed. Many important aspects of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks are included such as, receiver operating characteristics, detection rate versus signal to noise ratio (SNR), and the minimum required sample points for a specific performance. All simulations were performed to include most factors affecting the efficiency of the proposed sensing methodology such as, number of tapers (K), number of sample points (N), and the probability of false alarm (Pf). A comparison with energy detection method was done. All simulation results and comparisons confirm that the proposed model is reliable and robust under all factors considered in the simulation.

Cognitive radios may hide themselves in between the primary users to avoid being charged for spectrum usage. To deal with such scenarios, a cyclostationary Fast Fourier Transform accumulation method (FAM) has been used to develop a new strategy for recognising channel users under perfect and different noise environment conditions. Channel users are tracked according to the changes in their signal parameters, such as modulation techniques. MATLAB® Simulation tool was used to run various modulation signals on channels, and the obtained spectral correlation density function shows successful recognition between secondary and primary signals. We are unaware of previous efforts to use the FAM characteristics or other detection methods to make a distinction between channel users as presented in this thesis. A novel combination of both cognitive radio technology and ultra wideband technology is interdicted in this thesis, looking for an efficient and reliable spectrum sensing method to detect the presence of primary transmitters, and a number of spectrum-sensing techniques implemented in ultra wideband and cognitive radio component (UWB-CR) under different AWGN and fading settings environments. The sensing performance of different detectors is compared in conditions of probability of detection and miss detection curves. Simulation results show that the selection of detectors rely on the different fading scenarios, detector requirements and on a priori knowledge. Furthermore, result showed that the matched filter detection method is suitable for detecting signals through UWB-CR system under various fading channels. A general observation is that the matched filter detector outperforms the other detectors in all scenarios by an average of SNR=-20 dB in the level of probability of detection (Pd) , and the energy detector slightly outperforms the cyclostationary detector, in the level Pd at SNR=-20 dB. Furthermore, the thesis adapts novel detection models of cooperative and cluster cooperative wideband spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. In the proposed schemes, wavelet-based multi-resolution spectrum sensing and a proposed approach scheme are utilized for improving sensing performance of both models. On the other hand, cluster based cooperative spectrum sensing with soft combination Equal Gain Combination (EGC) scheme is proposed. The proposed detection models could achieve improvement of transmitter signal detection in terms of higher probability of detection and lower probability of false alarm. In the cooperative wideband spectrum sensing model, using traditional fusion rule, existing worst performance of false alarms by measurement is 78% of the sensing bands at an average SNR=5 dB; this compares with the proposed model, which is by measurement 19% false alarms of scanning spectrum at the same SNR for cluster cooperative wideband spectrum sensing. The proposed combining methods shows improvements of results with a high probability of detection (Pd) and low probability of false alarm (Pf) at an average SNR=-16 dB compared with other traditional fusion methods; this is illustrated through numerical results.
