Book excerpt: Traditional routing protocols cannot provide a seamless connectivity in a highly dynamic and dense mobile ad hoc network of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles) nodes, due to frequent link breaks, high congestion and the quality of service (QoS) demands of time-sensitive and high data-rate data delivery. In addition, the control overhead and delay increase significantly in these schemes with the increase in the network size. Proactive routing algorithms, such as the OLSR (optimized link state routing) protocol, are widely used in the literature to accommodate strict demands on time-bound data delivery. OLSR maintains routes to all reachable nodes in the network which minimizes the route discovery time, but incurs a huge control overhead. To address this issue, we propose two algorithms which reduce the control traffic overhead at the cost of a minimal drop in PDR (packet delivery ratio) as compared to the standard OLSR protocol. It is observed that the routing schemes which use multiple metrics for the route selection can significantly improve the QoS of the flow as compared to the single-metric (i.e., shortest hop) based route selection schemes, such as OLSR. Furthermore, they can provide quality-aware routes for complex scenarios where flows may have time-varying QoS requirements. Therefore, we have proposed a routing scheme using the hop count, residual link lifetime and buffer occupancy. Our scheme outperforms the standard OLSR protocol in every tested scenario, including medium and high node mobility with low, medium and high degree of congestion. Furthermore, our proposed scheme uses only 1-hop information for the route selection which significantly reduces the overhead and delay as compared to those multi-metric based routing schemes which require global knowledge for their route selection.

Book excerpt: Relying on unmanned autonomous flight control programs, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with radio communication devices have been actively developed around the world. Given their low cost, flexible maneuvering and unmanned operation, UAVs have been widely used in both civilian operations and military missions, including environmental monitoring, emergency communications, express distribution, even military surveillance and attacks, for example. Given that a range of standards and protocols used in terrestrial wireless networks are not applicable to UAV networks, and that some practical constraints such as battery power and no-fly zone hinder the maneuverability capability of a single UAV, we need to explore advanced communication and networking theories and methods for the sake of supporting future ultra-reliable and low-latency applications. Typically, the full potential of UAV network’s functionalities can be tapped with the aid of the cooperation of multiple drones relying on their ad hoc networking, in-network communications and coordinated control. Furthermore, some swarm intelligence models and algorithms conceived for dynamic negotiation, path programming, formation flight and task assignment of multiple cooperative drones are also beneficial in terms of extending UAV’s functionalities and coverage, as well as of increasing their efficiency. We call the networking and cooperation of multiple drones as the terminology ‘flying ad hoc network (FANET)’, and there indeed are numerous new challenges to be overcome before the idespread of so-called heterogeneous FANETs. In this book, we examine a range of technical issues in FANETs, from physical-layer channel modeling to MAC-layer resource allocation, while also introducing readers to UAV aided mobile edge computing techniques.

Book excerpt: Supporting scalable and efficient routing and service provision in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) has been a big research challenge. In this dissertation, we propose a scalable and efficient geographic routing and service provision architecture for MANET. The architecture is designed to possess the features of scalability, efficiency, robustness and adaptability. Conventional topology-based schemes are normally hard to scale, instead, we make use of geographic information in the architecture to improve the performance. Due to the close relationship between routing and service provision, we integrate the application-layer service provision and the network-layer routing in one architecture. Such cross-layer design makes different layers to work more closely and efficiently. The architecture is composed of four components. First, an efficient hierarchical structure is built and maintained. The structure is adaptive and flexible. Specifically, the number of layers can be adjusted according to the service and management requirements. Second, a scalable service and membership management scheme is deployed on top of the hierarchical structure to efficiently track the resource and service states. Third, the traffic patterns in a service provision network are various, and we design unicast and multicast routing protocols to support robust service data delivery in the architecture. We develop two self-adaptive on-demand geographic unicast routing protocols for MANET. They can build efficient paths based on the need of user applications and adapt to various scenarios to provide efficient and reliable routing. The local topology is updated in a timely manner according to network dynamics and traffic demand. A route optimization scheme is adopted to adapt the routing path according to both topology change and actual data traffic requirements. Instead of pre-setting parameter values, each node can determine and adjust the protocol parameter values independently according to different network environments, data traffic conditions and node's own requirements. We use the second protocol to support the peer communications in the architecture. Its reactive and adaptive mechanism can meet different routing requirements in service provision networks. We also design two scalable geographic multicast protocols for MANET to implement scalable membership management and robust multicast packet delivery. The first protocol builds a network-range zone-based bi-directional tree for membership management and packet delivery. In the second protocol, a hierarchical structure is constructed based on an on demand zone structure, and both control messages and data packets are forwarded along efficient tree-shape paths without active tree structure built and maintained, which efficiently reduces the maintenance overhead and increases the reliability of the protocol. Both protocols combine location service for group members with membership management to further reduce overhead. We use the second protocol in the architecture to provide scalable and robust routing support for group communications. Finally, with the support of all the above components, the service provision functions are deployed in the architecture. The service delivery including long-term data transfers and short-term control message transmissions is supported by our unicast and multicast routing protocols. By following the hierarchical structure, we design an efficient and scalable service discovery scheme to quickly locate appropriate service providers. Based on the service states aggregated at different layers through the service management and with the assist of the hierarchical structure, efficient service coordination is implemented in service discovery and usage phases to coordinate multiple service providers to provide a service. Furthermore, robust service monitoring can also be applied in the architecture to monitor the resource and service states during service usage.

Book excerpt: The communication range between a civilian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and a Ground Control Station (GCS) is affected by the government regulations that determine the use of frequency bands and constrain the amount of power in those frequencies. The application of multiple UAVs in search and rescue operations for example demands a reliable, long-range inter-UAV communication. The inter-UAV communication is the ability of UAVs to exchange data among themselves, thus forming a network in the air. This ability could be used to extend the range of communication by using a decentralized routing technique in the network. To provide this ability to a fleet of autonomous dirigible UAVs being developed at the University of Ottawa, a new communication framework was introduced and implemented. Providing a true mesh networking based on a novel routing protocol, the framework combines long-range radios at 900 MHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band with the software integrated into the electronics platform of each dirigible. With one radio module per dirigible the implemented software provides core functionalities to each UAV, such as exchanging flight control commands, telemetry data, and photos with any other UAV in a decentralized network or with the GCS. We made use of the advanced networking tools of the radio modules to build capabilities into the software for route tracing, traffic prioritization, and minimizing self-interference. Initial test results showed that without acknowledgements, packets can be received in the wrong order and cause errors in the transmission of photos. In addition, a transmission in a presence of a third broadcasting node slows down by 4-6 times. Based on these results our software was improved to control to flow of transmit data making the fragmentation, packetization, and reassembly of photos more reliable. Currently, using radios with half-wavelength dipole antennas we can achieve a one-hop communication range of up to 5 km with the radio frequency line-of-sight (RF LOS). This can be extended further by adding as many radio nodes as needed to act as intermediate hops.
