Book excerpt: This thesis presents the design and developments of robotic and virtual SWARM testbeds within SWARM Laboratory at the Australian National University. Some experimental works and theoretical outcomes are also included as parts of thesis research. These two testbeds aim to implement the active researches within System and Control Group in ANU on multi-agent systems, especially on formation control, onto physical robots and improve the algorithms practically by making comparisons of the experimental results from robotic and virtual testbeds. Due to the lack of sensing and communicating capabilities of the physical robots, an alternative approach, which deploys visual aid, networked communication and remote control, is proposed to provide localization capabilities for agents to achieve the distributed control system scheme of robotic testbed. While, the virtual testbed are capable to conduct self-localization and inter-agent communication, hence, a different distributed system approach is proposed. A series of various drive modes are developed to simplify the process of implementing Matlab simulations and to improve algorithms' performance. Then a novel method is presented for future use of these two testbed, which enables quick implementations on testbeds with a few modifications on Matlab simulation codes. At last, theoretical research on the development of a cooperative shadowing system is presented, and a speed only approach within this framework is proposed and investigated on the virtual testbed system.

The system architecture includes modules that allows full bidirectional communication between robots and WSN. One robot can The book describes the current state of the art in development of testbeds integrating Cooperating Object technologies. It describes in detail the testbed specification and design using requirements extracted from surveys among experts in robotics and ubiquitous systems in academia and industry. The book also describes the testbed novel architecture and its hardware and software components. Moreover, it includes details on user support tools to facilitate its use such as remote use using a virtual private network and sets of functionalities of interest for members from the robotics, WSN and robot-WSN communities. Book excerpt: Future military battlefields will see smaller forces responsible for ever increasing geographical areas. In addition, future conflicts will occur more often in urban or built-up areas. Both of these trends argue for some type of augmentation for initial reconnaissance, continued observation, and control of lines of communication and other key terrain features. Multisensor systems, mounted on a variety of robotic platforms, can provide this type of battlefield support where it is needed most. However, before costly decisions concerning the details of such systems can be made, basic research needs to be conducted regarding their most effective composition and utilization. Prior to this time all multiple robot studies at this institution had only taken place in simulated environments. This thesis implements a real-world multiple robot system that uses a technique known as frontier-based exploration to explore and map a laboratory or office environment. In doing so, many previously hidden aspects of multiple robot systems, unnoticeable in simulation-only studies, become evident The results developed here are compared to results obtained elsewhere involving other robotic platforms. This research lays the foundation for future research involving multiple robots interacting as a system in a real-world environment and acting towards a common or shared goal.

Book excerpt: Robotic swarms are well suited for missions that involve covering large areas such as environmental monitoring, search-and-rescue operations, as well as those that require fusing information from multiple sources such as target tracking and machine inspection. However, navigating a swarm of robots effectively requires performing higher-level functions that are typically executed by humans such as commanding them to stay close and guiding them along with a preplanned route. In this context, the ability of multiple robots to stay together autonomously significantly reduces the cognitive load on a human operator. The goal of this thesis is to design and build a multi-robot testbed for studying human-swarm interaction. The specific objective of this research is to use methods from simulation-based design to estimate the control parameters required for robust operation of the robots. A consensus algorithm is implemented on simulated unicycle agents to keep them within sight of each other, as they follow a human leader. The algorithm is augmented with features to match a real-world implementation including realistic occlusion of swarm members in the presence of obstacles and collision handling. Search strategies are incorporated to reduce instances where a robot can be lost forever. Following an exhaustive simulation exercise, the control gains that reveal the best performance in terms of swarm connectedness and the ability to reach a goal location are further assessed in terms of their sensitivity to sensor noise. Finally, the approach is implemented and tested on an iRobot Create 2 testbed that consists of six robots monitored using an array of wide-angle web cameras in a large laboratory environment with obstacles. In a true decentralized architecture, the robots are instrumented with a microcontroller and a web camera to follow each other using vision-based cues only without any external reference.
