Book excerpt: ROBIN BANKSY Is a thirty year romp through London's art world seen through the eyes of its narrator a thirsty and ambitious fame hungry photographer turned art dealer. Hell bent on making mischief Robin accidentally finds himself pitched against the global phenomenon artist and activist BANKSY. Ditching a successful career as a celebrity portraitist following an unfortunate drinking incident he opens a hopelessly ill thought out niche art gallery 'Bankrobber' in London's fashionable Notting Hill Gate and is naively coerced into displaying a street work by the revered artist resulting in a tidal wave of threats and abuse. Following a threatening call from the artists girl friday demanding he cease and desist he chooses instead to pick up the proffered gauntlet putting in play a 'Cat and Mouse' game that was to last a decade a rollercoaster ride littered with law suits, litigation and mischievous obfuscation. Gathering together a firm headed up by a sociopathic scaffolder named Sky Grimes he sets about planning the removal and sale of some of the artists most celebrated 'Street Works' resulting in a global outpouring of moral and media outrage.Robin subverting the artists famed anonymity to his own ends creates a smokescreen of doubt and duplicity that brings to question both he and his nemesis true motifs and identity. Casting himself as the villainous 'Sheriff of Notting-Hill Gate' pitted against Banksy's 'Robin Hood' there follows a chaotic and bizarre journey that sees him visiting Palestine, Long Island and Miami in his avaricious quest.Littered throughout the memoir are anecdotes and observations on how the 'Art World' was successfully hijacked by exiled City traders and turned into the money laundering 'Art Market' of today. All set against the background of a London of lost drinking dens and louche behaviour.Culminating in a tawdry vaudevillian 'Music Hall' farce, essentially a two hander one nameless and one shameless. Were it not for my Robin Banksy, when Banksy was Robin you, who had really been Robin who? [audience] He's behind you!!!....oh no he's not!!

Book excerpt: For someone who shuns the limelight so completely that he conceals his name, never shows his face and gives interviews only by email, Banksy is remarkably famous. From his beginnings as a Bristol graffiti artist, his artwork is now sold at auction for six-figure sums and hangs on celebrities’ walls. The appearance of a new Banksy is national news, his documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop was Oscar-nominated and people queue for hours to see his latest exhibition. Now more National Treasure than edgy outsider, who is Banksy and how did he become what he is today? In the first attempt to tell the full story of Banksy’s life and career, Will Ellsworth-Jones pieces together a picture of his world and unpicks its contradictions. Whether art or vandalism, anti-establishment or sell-out, Banksy and his work have become a cultural phenomenon and the question ‘Who is Banksy?’ is as much about his career as it is ‘the man behind the wall’. 'Britain's unlikeliest national treasure' Independent ‘A fascinating portrait that elicits admiration for a man who, despite his increasingly unconvincing efforts to retain some shred of his vandal status, has had an undeniable impact on art’ The Times

Book Nat Tate

  • Author : William Boyd
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2011-05-03
  • ISBN : 1608197263
  • Pages : 74 pages

Download or read book Nat Tate written by William Boyd and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William Boyd published his biography of New York modern artist Nat Tate, a huge reception of critics and artists arrived for the launch party, hosted by David Bowie, to toast the late artist's life. Little did they know that the painter Nat Tate, a depressive genius who burned almost all his output before his suicide, never existed. The book was a hoax, and the art world had fallen for it. Nat Tate is a work of art unto itself-an investigation of the blurry line between the invented and the authentic, and a thoughtful tour through the spirited and occasionally ludicrous American art scene of the 1950s. William Boyd is the author of nine novels, including A Good Man in Africa, winner of the Whitbread Award and the Somerset Maugham Award; An Ice-Cream War, winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize and shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Brazzaville Beach, winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize; and Restless, winner of the Costa Novel of the Year Award. Praise for Nat Tate: "William Boyd's description of Tate's working procedure is so vivid that it convinces me that the small oil I picked up on Prince Street, New York, in the late '60s must indeed be one of the lost Third Panel Triptychs. The great sadness of this quiet and moving monograph is that the artist's most profound dread-that God will make you an artist but only a mediocre artist-did not in retrospect apply to Nat Tate."-David Bowie "A moving account of an artist too well understood by his time."-Gore Vidal

Robert's artwork has come to define the iconic style of his band and the book explores their visual history, presenting both familiar and previously unseen work, from his influential graffiti and stencil art in the Wild Bunch-era of the 80s to Massive Attack cover designs and paste-ups and paintings. Also included is his work made in collaboration with Nick Knight, Tom Hingston, Judy Blame and Michael Nash Associates, as well as unseen photographs documenting Del Naja's ongoing LED work with United Visual ArtistsUnited Visual Artists, and his recent work with filmmaker Adam Curtis. The 300-page book also features an in-depth interview with the artist, where he describes the development of the band's artwork and record sleeve designs, as well as offering insight into his process and inspirations. Del Naja's background as a graffiti artist has shaped his evolving aesthetic, as well as a strong ethos of do it yourself creativity. His instincts as an artist were forged in an atmosphere of spontaneity and innovation - from making flyers to throwing warehouse parties - and this way of working informed the first record sleeves he created. Inspired by magazine culture and comics, 3D drew on wide-ranging influences, from New Yorks hip-hop scene and Japanese graphics, Jean-Michel Basquiats cultural juxtapositions to Warhols pop imagery, politics and punk.

Book Politics of Fear Practices of Hope

Download or read book Politics of Fear Practices of Hope written by Stefan Skrimshire and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-11-03 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics of Fear, Practices of Hope is about the relationship between two hugely influential ideas in political life: fear and hope. How are cultures of resistance nurtured within an environment of paranoia and social paralysis? Stefan Skrimshire argues that grass-roots responses to a politics of fear coincide with an explosion of interest in the quasi-religious themes of apocalypse, eschatology and utopia in cultural life. Where visions of a better future are replaced by the acceptance of a fearful present - a state of 'war with no end' - this is an important examination of the beliefs that underpin our capacity to hope.

They emphasize the fundamental element in the criminal act of opportunity: how this arises, how it is perceived, evaluated and acted on by those with criminal dispositions. This volume brings together influential research articles on opportunity theories of crime by leading theorists such as Cohen and Felson on routine activity theory and Clarke and Cornish on the bounded rational choice perspective. The articles also include more recent theoretical developments and studies of situational crime prevention of specific twenty-first century crimes.
