Download or read book Roberto Polillo Between the Visible and the Invisible written by Roberto Polillo and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I think of myself as a travel photographer. I travel the world, photographing the aspects that most strike me. But unlike most travel photographers, I am not interested in documenting the characteristic elements of a place?what is different, unique, or strange about it. Instead, I try to capture the ?spirit of the places,? to peer beneath the surface of what we see. I look for the soul, if you will, and I try to convey it through my images. Like a collector, I explore the diversity of our planet, gathering the moods, auras, and feelings of the places that fascinate me.??Roberto Polillo00The story of a photographer?s journey to capture the soul of a place through Intentional Camera Movement photography. Roberto Polillo illustrates how his artistic explorations have evolved over fifteen years, from his early projects on Venice and Morocco to his more recent ventures with cities of the future and the spirituality of places in Italy and Asia.

This book was released on 2009-08-06 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTERACT 2009 was the 12th of a series of INTERACT international c- ferences supported by the IFIP Technical Committee 13 on Human–Computer Interaction. This year,INTERACT washeld in Uppsala (Sweden), organizedby the Swedish Interdisciplinary Interest Group for Human–Computer Interaction (STIMDI) in cooperation with the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University. Like its predecessors, INTERACT 2009 highlighted, both to the academic and to the industrial world, the importance of the human–computer interaction (HCI) area and its most recent breakthroughs on current applications. Both - perienced HCI researchers and professionals, as well as newcomers to the HCI ?eld, interested in designing or evaluating interactive software, developing new interaction technologies, or investigating overarching theories of HCI, found in INTERACT 2009 a great forum for communication with people of similar int- ests, to encourage collaboration and to learn. INTERACT 2009 had Research and Practice as its special theme. The r- son we selected this theme is that the research within the ?eld has drifted away from the practicalapplicability of its results and that the HCI practice has come to disregard the knowledge and development within the academic community.

Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. We understand very little about the billions of dollars that flow throughout the world from migrants back to their home countries. In this rigorous and illuminating work, Matt Bakker, an economic sociologist, examines how these migrant remittances—the resources of some of the world’s least affluent people—have come to be seen in recent years as a fundamental contributor to development in the migrant-sending states of the Global South. This book analyzes how the connection between remittances and development was forged through the concrete political and intellectual practices of policy entrepreneurs within a variety of institutional settings, from national government agencies and international development organizations to nongovernmental policy foundations and think tanks.

Download or read book Visual Cultures as Time Travel written by Henriette Gunkel and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of time travel marked by both possibility and loss: making the case for cultural research that is oriented toward the future. Visual Cultures as Time Travel makes a case for cultural, aesthetic, and historical research that is oriented toward the future, not the past, actively constructing new categories of assembly that don't yet exist. Ayesha Hameed considers the relationship between climate change and plantation economies, proposing a watery plantationocene that revolves around two islands: a former plantation in St. George's Parish in Barbados, and the port city of Port of Spain in Trinidad. It visits a marine research institute on a third island, Seili in Finland, to consider how notions of temporality and adaptation are produced in the climate emergency we face. Henriette Gunkel introduces the idea of time travel through notions of dizziness, freefall, and of being in vertigo as set out in Octavia Butler's novel Kindred and Kitso Lynn Lelliott's multimedia installation South Atlantic Hauntings, exploring what counts as technology, how it operates in relation to time, including deep space time, and how it interacts with the different types of bodies—human, machine, planetary, spectral, ancestral—that inhabit the terrestrial and extraterrestrial worlds. In conversation, Hameed and Gunkel propose a notion of time travel marked by possibility and loss—in the aftermath of transatlantic slavery and in the moment of mass illegalized migration, of blackness and time, of wildfires and floods, of lost and co-opted futures, of deep geological time, and of falling. Copublished with Goldsmiths, University of London

Book Giovanna Silva Paolo Rosselli Islamabad Today

Download or read book Giovanna Silva Paolo Rosselli Islamabad Today written by Paolo Rosselli and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962, the architecture practice Ponti Fornaroli Rosselli was commissioned to design and build part of the Ministries area of the new capital of West Pakistan, Islamabad, which was under construction according to Constantinos Doxiadis and Robert Matthew?s master plan. Fifteen hundred architecture drawings and less than two years later, the buildings were completed. At some moments, five thousand workers were on site at the same time. Project manager Alberto Rosselli declared that the idea was not to transfer their Western knowledge to Pakistan, but to create a new Pakistan. Moved by this incredible project, where the personal stories of the Ponti and Rosselli families crossed paths against a backdrop of architectural and political history, Giovanna Silva traveled to Islamabad in 2020 with Paolo Rosselli, nephew of Gio Ponti and son of Alberto Rosselli. It was a journey through architecture, personal memories, and a city built in the desert as a future capital of a new world, against the beautiful scenery of the Margalla Hills. Silva?s photographs show the buildings in their everyday public function, with a focus on the spaces as performed by their users. The book also features archival images of the building site and construction, and a narrative text by Paolo Rosselli tracing the story of the project and his reactions during his first visit to his father?s work in Islamabad.

Book Climate Change and Society

Download or read book Climate Change and Society written by Riley E. Dunlap and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the most critical issues of the twenty-first century, presenting a major intellectual challenge to both the natural and social sciences. While there has been significant progress in natural science understanding of climate change, social science analyses have not been as fully developed. Climate Change and Society breaks new theoretical and empirical ground by presenting climate change as a thoroughly social phenomenon, embedded in behaviors, institutions, and cultural practices. This collection of essays summarizes existing approaches to understanding the social, economic, political, and cultural dimensions of climate change. From the factors that drive carbon emissions to those which influence societal responses to climate change, the volume provides a comprehensive overview of the social dimensions of climate change. An improved understanding of the complex relationship between climate change and society is essential for modifying ecologically harmful human behaviors and institutional practices, creating just and effective environmental policies, and developing a more sustainable future. Climate Change and Society provides a useful tool in efforts to integrate social science research, natural science research, and policymaking regarding climate change and sustainability. Produced by the American Sociological Association's Task Force on Sociology and Global Climate Change, this book presents a challenging shift from the standard climate change discourse, and offers a valuable resource for students, scholars, and professionals involved in climate change research and policy.

Book Interrogating Inequality

Download or read book Interrogating Inequality written by Erik Olin Wright and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively new collection from one of America's leading sociologists covers a wide range of theoretical problems of interest to radical social scientists and political activists. The book opens with a fascinating autobiographical essay exploring the challenges and benefits of being a Marxist scholar in the present era. Following this is a discussion of various issues in class analysis, with particular attention being paid to two overarching themes: class and inequality, and the relationship between class and power. The second section of the book engages the problem of socialism as a possible future to capitalism. Wright attempts to clarify the conceptual status of socialism, and discusses why certain reforms such as basic income grants may ultimately require the introduction of some form of socialism for their full realization. Interrogating Inequality concludes by examining the general problem of Marxism as a tradition of radical social theory. Three issues in particular are discussed: the central principles of "analytical Marxism" as a strategy for reconstructing Marxism as a social scientific theory; the relationship between Marxism and feminism as emancipatory social theories; and the prospects for Marxism in the aftermath of the collapse of communist regimes.

The present volume provides descriptions for 35 families and altogether 340 genera, including three genera of somewhat uncertain family affiliation. Book The Tourism Education Futures Initiative

Download or read book The Tourism Education Futures Initiative written by Darko Prebežac and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world faces many serious challenges informed, courageous and mindful leadership is needed for a better future. The Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI) is the collective effort of a group of innovative, thoughtful and committed scholars and industry leaders seeking to provide vision, knowledge, and a framework for tourism education programs that promote global citizenship and optimism for a better world. This book consolidates some of TEFI’s work as it seeks to be the leading, forward-looking network that inspires, informs and supports tourism educators and students to passionately and courageously transform the world for the better. It makes the case for why change is needed, and how tourism educators can respond to that change with strategies and values-based tools. The book contains papers published in special TEFI issues of the Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism (JTTT), which question and explore some of the most important theoretical, conceptual and practical issues facing tourism education now and into the future. The book concludes by integrating the special issues’ key contributions with a brief conceptualisation of education futures before it outlines TEFI’s framework for action over the coming years. Tourism educators worldwide will find that this volume serves two important purposes. On the one hand, it challenges educators to think both critically and proactively about tourism education, while on the other sharing examples of teaching and learning tools that seek to prepare our students for the future and to be global citizens that live lives of consequence. This book is a collection of articles from the Journal of Teaching in Travel and Tourism.

Book Laura Grisi the Measuring of Time

Download or read book Laura Grisi the Measuring of Time written by Clément Dirié and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the many lives and mediums of a postwar Italian artist-adventurer Published on the occasion of her long-deserved retrospective at Muzeum Susch, this book testifies to the singular vision of Italian artist Laura Grisi (1939-2017) within contemporary art history. Born in Greece, educated in Paris and living between New York and Rome, where she died, Grisi spent long periods of her life in Africa, South America and Polynesia. This involvement with non-Western cultures indelibly marked her own search for a cosmic thinking. Although her work is often reduced to Pop art, Grisi always worked within the fundamental motif of the "journey"--from remote locations visited and documented, to the multiplicity of mediums used. Grisi embodied a stateless, nomadic female subject defying the politics of identity, the univocity of representation and the unidirectionality of time. Grisi's work spans from her avant-garde Variable Paintingsof the mid-1960s and her 1970s pioneering environmental installations dealing with fog, wind and rain, to her conceptual photo-works of the 1980s.

Book States and Social Movements

Download or read book States and Social Movements written by Hank Johnston and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late eighteenth century, politics, protest, and the state have evolved together, each shaping the other in significant ways. This engaging and succinct treatment of protest-state interaction shows how the modern national state developed in tandem with social movement mobilization, arguing that to understand the state fully, you cannot ignore the role of political protest. Today, social movements are an integral part of politics: modern democratic states are, in reality, social movement societies, and protest mobilization permeates how politics is regularly accomplished. States and Social Movements presents a balanced and comprehensive assessment of various theories of social movements, engaging both state-centered approaches, and cultural and agency-based perspectives. Hank Johnston takes a broad view, analyzing democratic transitions and revolutions, how protest occurs in repressive states, and concluding with an exploration of the emerging repertoire of global social movements, where these movements come from, and if they spell the end of the modern state as we know it. States and Social Movements cuts to the core of how social movements interact with all types of state system to produce variable outcomes such as democracy, policy reform, repression, insurrection, and revolution. As such, it is essential reading for students and scholars of sociology and political science interested in the important research area of contentious politics.

Book Manual for a Future Desert

Book excerpt: The desert and desertification are concepts with unstable, unfixed definitions that haunt current politics and aesthetics. Manual for a future desert proposes a full-spectrum scanning of the desert and its multiple implications across cultural, technological, political, and ecological concerns. Emerging from an artistic research program conducted in the Chihuahuan Desert on western Texas, this book is a time-space capsule; it collects routes, tools, and understandings on the desert in order to address and act upon issues that shape present and future realities. It is a manual for tapping into the exigency of the desert; it determines the coordinates for finding a future desert without deserting the future --
