Book Love Poems of Frederick Douglas Harper

Download or read book Love Poems of Frederick Douglas Harper written by Frederick Douglas Harper and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI, 1957: Reaching the top of his profession, lawyer Robert Andrews Winslow wins the triple murder/rape trial of black man Otis Lee Williams, but less than a year later, Otis Lee is executed for a similar crime. Guilt-ridden for not helping save Otis Lee and scorned for helping in the first trial, Winslow's slide begins. Alone, broke and usually drunk, he leaves Mississippi and his profession. OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI, 1991: Down and out, Winslow has no place left to go but home to the small bungalow on General's Road outside Oxford, his meager inheritance. Now a writer, he's given two files, which might contain a desperately needed story, and musters himself for a last try to salvage his life. He drags his weary, sedentary and abused body along dusty back roads where he encounters Mississippi Delta families who share the land, wealth and a special desire to conceal secrets long-buried in the rich black soil. Constantly in danger and aided by friends whose motives he doubts, Winslow pieces together the story hinted in two autopsy files: Rosemary Thompson - Antigua, Raymond Thompson - Los Angeles. The twins died almost the same time at age thirty-two, thousands of miles apart, both naked in bed. The dead twins are the story but when Rob discovers the other DUPLICATES, he begins to realize the connection to himself, his past... and his downfall. A few secrets remaining, the murder of his black friend Hook Todd forces Rob Winslow back into to the courtroom in defense of another innocent man. Manipulating the justice system he once loved, Winslow is able to solve six crimes committed over seventy-five years, including his own murder by a so-called crazy man who isn't crazy at all.

Book excerpt: During his lifetime, Robert Lee Brothers (1908 - 1979) published two other collections of poetry. At the time of his death, he had compiled and arranged a fourth collection, "Late Harvest". Thanks to his daughters, Nancy Kaye Brothers Paris of Gonzales, Texas and Barbara Jo Brothers, a writer, editor, and social worker in New Orleans, the poet's life work is now being published in one volume. One critic compared Brothers' poems to those of Robert Frost. "He sees everything human as being subjugated to and both diminished and enhanced by natural forces." Brothers spent most of his life as a rancher in south central Texas.

Book American Poets and Poetry 2 volumes

Download or read book American Poets and Poetry 2 volumes written by Jeffrey Gray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethnically diverse scope, broad chronological coverage, and mix of biographical, critical, historical, political, and cultural entries make this the most useful and exciting poetry reference of its kind for students today. American poetry springs up out of all walks of life; its poems are "maternal as well as paternal...stuff'd with the stuff that is coarse and stuff'd with the stuff that is fine," as Walt Whitman wrote, adding "Of every hue and caste am I, of every rank and religion." Written for high school and undergraduate students, this two-volume encyclopedia covers U.S. poetry from the Colonial era to the present, offering full treatments of hundreds of key poets of the American canon. What sets this reference apart is that it also discusses events, movements, schools, and poetic approaches, placing poets in their social, historical, political, cultural, and critical contexts and showing how their works mirror the eras in which they were written. Readers will learn about surrealism, ekphrastic poetry, pastoral elegy, the Black Mountain poets, and "language" poetry. There are long and rich entries on modernism and postmodernism as well as entries related to the formal and technical dimensions of American poetry. Particular attention is paid to women poets and poets from various ethnic groups. Poets such as Amiri Baraka, Nathaniel Mackey, Natasha Trethewey, and Tracy Smith are featured. The encyclopedia also contains entries on a wide selection of Latino and Native American poets and substantial coverage of the avant-garde and experimental movements and provides sidebars that illuminate key points.

Book Twentieth Century Southern Literature

Download or read book Twentieth Century Southern Literature written by J. A. BryantJr. and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors discussed include: Wendell Berry, Erskine Caldwell, Truman Capote, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, Shelby Foote, Zora Neal Hurston, Bobbie Ann Mason, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, William Styron, Anne Tyler, Alice Walker, Robert Penn Warren, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, Thomas Wolfe, Richard Wright, and many more. By World War II, the Southern Renaissance had established itself as one of the most significant literary events of the century, and today much of the best American fiction is southern fiction. Though the flowering of realistic and local-color writing during the first two decades of the century was a sign of things to come, the period between the two world wars was the crucial one for the South's literary development: a literary revival in Richmond came to fruition; at Vanderbilt University a group of young men produced The Fugitive, a remarkable, controversial magazine that published some of the century's best verse in its brief run; and the publication and widespread recognition of Faulkner (among others) inaugurated the great flood of southern writing that was to follow in novels, short stories, poetry, and plays. With more than forty years of experience writing and reading about the subject, and friendships with many of the figures discussed, J. A. Bryant is uniquely qualified to provide the first comprehensive account of southern American literature since 1900. Bryant pays attention to both the cultural and the historical context of the works and authors discussed, and presents the information in an enjoyable, accessible style. No lover of great American literature can afford to be without this book.
