Asks Howe to order two men serving under him, Phineas Austin and Robert Cormach, to travel to Boston by the first of September. They, along with Thomas Austin, under Knox's command, are required to serve [as witnesses] against rascals accused of collusion. Adds, Nothing further has transpired relative to Mr. Granville that can be depended on. Addressee is not mentioned, but is inferred from content. No location is given, but he may be near Rochefort, France [see GLC02437.01429, a letter from two days earlier, which locates William Knox at Rochefort].

Comments that General Henry Clinton is on his way to reinforce the British at Rhode Island. Suggests that Lord John Byron, also sent to reinforce Howe, may give Howe's fleet superiority over Sullivan (Howe received no help from Byron, whose fleet had been damaged in a gale). Gives William instructions should Howe, Byron, and Clinton attempt to attack Boston, urging him to keep his conjectures secret. Some text loss on page three. In a post script, mentions his daughter and wife, both named Lucy.

Knox lost six men in an accident, which he casts as a learning experience for the others, who will learn to moderate their fiery courage. After the attack the British ships sailed north to Tappan Bay, near Tarrytown New York. Knox will send Lucy's clothes to New Haven, where he hopes she will go. He reaffirms his love for her. Also notes a rumor that General William Howe was aboard one of the ships that sailed up the Hudson River.
