Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns: And the Common People At the request of the publishers, and for my own pleasure, I have written a book about Robert Burns. I am now told there must be a foreword or preface. This I believe is quite in accordance with orthodox bookmaking practice. A foreword is never a foreword. It is an afterthought. It is the last thing written, and would be described as a postscript were it not that it is placed at the beginning instead of at the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Burns: The Poet of the People Robert Burns, the Poet of the People, was born in a cottage on the banks of the Doon, about two miles from Ayr, on the 25th of Jan uary, 1759. His father was servant to a gentle man who lived near Ayr. In his twenty-third year Robert Burns joined a Flax-dresser named Irwin with a view of learning the trade. A dis astrous fire put an end to this scheme, and left the poet penniless and without a trade. Later on he joined his brother and became a farmer. On the failure of the farming, Burns began to publish his poems. He soon attracted the at tention of prominent men of letters, and nota bly the patronage of the Earl of Glencairn. In February, 1788, he took the farm at Ellisland on the banks of the Nith. Shortly after this he married his darling Jean. In 1789 he was appointed an officer of Excise. In 1791 he removed to Dumfries. Here he made many enemies by his strongly expressed sentiments concerning the French Revolution. His oft repeated opinions nearly lost him his position. He was retained in office after a very severe repri mand. This stern reproof embittered his proud Spirit. Sickness overtook him. He went fora. Book The Poetry of Robert Burns and the Relationship of his Contemporaries to it

This book was released on 2003-01-12 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2000 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1.7 (A-), University of Southern California (English Department), course: 19th century british literatures and cultures, language: English, abstract: Robert Burns, born on the 25th of January in Alloway/Ayrshire, is considered to be the greatest national folk poet Scotland ever had, and he mainly has this status because of his songs. There is hardly anybody in the world that doesn′t know "Auld Lang Syne". Apart from that Burns is considered as the poet of the common people. He wrote poetry that was directly linked to their lives. Is there another poet who wrote poems about lower animals like a mouse or a louse before him? Today there even is a yearly Burns Supper that is held on his Birthday, where the people meet, have a rather rich meal and recite his poetry and sing his songs. But is that really all about the Poet, who by some people also is considered as the man who had an impact on the "formation" of romanticism and therefore also on his contemporaries? Of course it isn′t. In this paper I shall try to show the relationship and the nature of impact Burns′ poetry had on his contemporaries and also the differences of opinion that could even change over the time in one and the same person as the example of William Wordsworth shows.
