Book Robert Browning and the Drama Classic Reprint

Download or read book Robert Browning and the Drama Classic Reprint written by Walter Fairfax and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning and the Drama Never has the death of a great poet elicited a more spontaneous, widely spread and rationally founded appreciation of his work than in the case of Robert Browning and yet, with a full ac knowledgment of this fact, I feel that on three points complete justice still remains to be done him, and I venture to prophesy that the day is not far off when it will be universally recognized that (1) he was, broadly speaking, one of the greatest of the masters of rhythm and metre, (2) that in the special domain of blank verse he was a legitimate and paramount creator, and (3) that the comparatively small number of plays he has left entitles him to rank among the world's piti ably few great dramatists. As far, at any rate, as English literature is concerned - setting aside Shakespeare, Shelley's Cenci and Milton's Samson Agonistcs - a selection from its whole wide and opulent range would not furnish a body of eight (or nine) plays equal in combined poetic, dramatic, theatric and ethic value to the like number with which Browning has enriched the world. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning in His Relation to the Art of Painting: Read at the Twenty-Eighth Meeting of the Browning Society of Boston, March 26, 1889 To-day, it is of one only of the arts that I wish to say a few words. To-day, I have the pleasure of speaking, to the Society which represents him in Boston, of Robert Brown ing in his relation to the Art of Painting, that we may see, so far as may be in the very limited scope of this paper, how deeply, how wisely, and how justly this Poet deals with the Painter. I shall have no word to say of Browning's own art: it does not come within my province to speak of his verse as such, only as it relates itself to my subject, as it ex plains or illuminates pictures and those who painted them. Download or read book Robert Browning written by Robert Browning and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Browning is one of the most important figures in nineteenth-century English poetry. The dramatic monologue form, which he practically invented and of which he remains the leading exponent, allowed him to write poetry of a psychologically revealing quality which can be seen as laying the foundations not only for late Victorians whom he directly influenced such as the Pre-Raphaelites, but ultimately for Modernist poetry. The Ring and the Book, an ambitious and demanding verse-novel told from ten different viewpoints, won him popular acclaim and retains its reputation as one of the great poems in English, though it is now little read compared with some of Browning's shorter poems. This edition is a facsimile of Augustine Birrell's 1901 edition, itself following the order and contents of the edition prepared by Browning himself in 1888. All of the published poetical works are printed, including Browning's early verse-dramas, some staged and some intended only for print, the various volumes of shorter poetry, The Ring and the Book and the translation of Aeschylus's Agamemnon among the other works. The contents of the volumes are as follows: Volume 1 ( pp.): Introduction to the Poetical Works by Dr. Jennifer McDonell; Pauline; Paracelsus; Strafford; Sordello; Pippa Passes; King Victor and King Charles; Dramatic Lyrics; The Return of the Druses; A Blot in the 'Scutcheon; Colombe's Birthday; Dramatic Romances; Luria, A Soul's Tragedy; Christmas-Eve and Easter-Day; Men and Women; In a Balcony; Dramatis PersonAe; Balaustion's Adventure; Aristophanes' Apology Volume 2 (777 pp.): The Ring and the Book; Prince Hohenstiel-Schwangau; Fifine at the Fair; Red Cotton Nigh-Cap Country; The Inn Album; Pacchiarotto; The Agamemnon of Aeschylus; La Saisiaz; The Two Poets of Croisic; Dramatic Idyls; Jocoseria; Ferishtah's Fancies; Parleyings with Certain People of Importance in their Day; Asolando Dr. Jennifer McDonell, Lecturer at the University of New England and a specialist in Robert Browning, has written a new critical introduction to the Poetical Works.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Masters: Browning and Turgenief Of the two papers which make up this little volume the first was written to commemorate the centennial of Robert Browning's birth. It is the result, not so much of minute and critical study of the poet's work in detail, as of long and intimate communion with the poet's mind and heart as these are expressed in his verse. Yet the exercise of the critical faculty has not been neglected, as I trust the following pages will show. My endeavor has been to give as complete a survey as my limited space would allow of Browning's literary career and achieve ment. It is my modest hope that this paper will be an inspiration and help to those who as yet are unacquainted, except in a very super ficial way, with Browning's poems. It may also aid in correcting those grotesque misappre hensions of his work which have hindered many from entering into possession of the riches of color, thought, emotion, hope and dauntless faith which the poet offers to readers who take him on his own terms. Book The English Pre Raphaelite Painters

Download or read book The English Pre Raphaelite Painters written by Percy H. Bate and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Pre-Raphaelite Painters: Their Associates and Successors That such a fact is of high importance in studying their work is most true, but the adequate consideration of so fascinating a feature would extend this volume far beyond its due limits. But the reader who bears in mind that Ford Madox Brown, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Thomas Woolner, James Collinson, Walter Deverell, Walter Crane, J. W. Inchbold, Sir Noel Paton, and William Bell Scott are all poets of varying achievement, and who remembers that in the inner history of the movement the names, inter alia, of Christina Rossetti, William Morris, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Coventry Patmore, Mathilde Blind, Philip Bourke Marston, and T. Gordon Hake, loom large, will see more clearly the aim of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, and will comprehend the intimate association of poetic feeling and expression with their devotion to veracity of presentment. Reference has been made, as far as was possible, in the list of illustrations, to the owners, artists, and photographers who have allowed their pictures to appear in this volume. The author and publishers desire, however, to express here their appreciation of the kindness and courtesy they have almost invariably experienced, and to tender their cordial thanks for the permissions for reproduction, without which no adequate representation of the Pre-Raphaelite School of Painting would have been possible.
