Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that states emerged in Western Europe as powerful political-geographical centres rather than nation-states or national states, Samuel Clark examines and compares the centres and peripheries of these two large regional zones, focusing not only on England and France but also on Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Savoy, and the Southern Low Countries. This wide-ranging and multifaceted work shows how the state shaped the aristocracy and transformed its political, economic, cultural, and status power. From a theoretical perspective, State and Status is both innovative and significant; Clark is the first to link the anti-functionalist historical sociology of Western Europe with the functionalist or neofunctionalist tradition in sociology.

Book excerpt: The Robe was the author's most successful book, going through multiple printings and remaining in the number one slot on the New York Times best seller list for almost a year. It was made into a film in which Richard Burton was the lead actor and which was nominated for a number of Academy awards. The book is a fictional telling of the story of the aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus through the experiences of the Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio, who carried out the crucifixion, and his Greek slave Demetrius. Gallio wins the Robe through a toss of the dice and it comes to have an impact on his thinking and his life. Lloyd C. Douglas was an American minister and author born in Indiana in 1877. He was married and had two children. He did not write his first novel until the age of 50 but was considered to be one of the most popular writers of his time. His works usually had a moral and religious tone. Two of his best known works were The Robe and The Big Fisherman, which were made into major motion pictures. The Robe, written in 1942, sold over two million copies in hardcover alone. It held the number one position on the New York Times Best Seller list for over a year and remained on the list for an additional two years. The film version of The Robe hit the screen in 1953 and starred Richard Burton.

Book excerpt: Civilization and madness; community and class; bureaucracy, corruption, and revolution—these essays range from social history to political history and the history of ideas. All take a strong interpretive stand in the manner of the man to whom they are dedicated. Together they make a major contribution to the scholarship on sixteenth-century and seventeenth-century Europe. In the presentation of these original essays, it is justly noted that J. H. Hexter served as the conscience of his fellow scholars for over thirty years—a distinguished tribute accompanied by the best work by the best people in the field. Former students are among the contributors, as are some of J. H. Hexter's colleagues and friends, including two that he frequently engaged in debate, Geoffrey Elton and Lawrence Stone. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, J. H. Hexter received his B.A. degree from the University of Cincinnati and his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University. From 1939 to 1957 he taught at Queens College, CUNY. He then spent seven years as a member of the faculty of Washington University, to which he returned on his retirement from Yale University; where he taught from 1964 to 1978. Among his numerous awards are two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Fulbright Fellowship, a fellowship from the Ford Foundation and one from the Institute for Advanced Study.
