Book excerpt: Rob Roy MacGregor, Scotland's most romantic, elusive hero, was an outlaw and a life-long enemy of Montrose. So well-known was he that no one thought to write down a physical description of him, or any direct record of his childhood and youth. Thus tracking down Rob Roy today is to embark upon a painstaking search through archives, estate records and folk myths, enriched and confused by the romantic yarns that have grown up around him. W. H. Murray brings together new interpretations of Rob Roy's life and times to produce a new understanding of the character, actions and motives of a man who became a myth and symbol of Scotland. Murray shows that Rob Roy's renown stems from his remarkable force of character, rather than his politics or his place in the writings of Sir Walter Scott. His political mission outwardly failed, but his extraordinary resolution in adversity has earned him his place in history and legend.

Book The Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection

Download or read book The Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection written by David Shields and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection is a comprehensive collection of wood type manufactured and used for printing in nineteenth-century America. Comprising nearly 150 typefaces of various sizes and styles, it was amassed by noted design educator and historian Rob Roy Kelly starting in 1957 and is now held by the University of Texas. Although Kelly himself published a 1969 book on wood type and nineteenth-century typographic history, there has been little written about the creation of the wood type forms, the collection, or Kelly. In this book, David Shields rigorously updates and expands upon Kelly’s historical information about the types, clarifying the collection’s exact composition and providing a better understanding of the stylistic development of wood type forms during the nineteenth century. Using rich materials from the period, Shields provides a stunning visual context that complements the textual history of each typeface. He also highlights the non-typographic material in the collection—such as borders, rules, ornaments, and image cuts—that have not been previously examined. Featuring over 300 color illustrations, this written history and catalog is bound to spark renewed interest in the collection and its broader typographic period.

Book In Search of the Dark Ages

Download or read book In Search of the Dark Ages written by Michael Wood and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated with the latest archaeological research new chapters on the most influential yet widely unrecognised people of the British isles, In Search of the Dark Ages illuminates the fascinating and mysterious centuries between the Romans and the Norman Conquest of 1066. In this new edition, Michael Wood vividly conjures some of the most important people in British history such as Hadrian, a Libyan refugee from the Arab conquests and arguably the most important person of African origin in British history, to Queen Boadicea, the leader of a terrible war of resistance against the Romans. Here too, warts and all, are the Saxon, Viking and Norman kings who laid the political foundations of England: Offa of Mercia, Alfred the Great, Athelstan, and William the Conqueror, whose victory at Hastings in 1066 marked the end of Anglo-Saxon England. Reflecting the latest historical, textual and archaeological research, this revised and updated edition of Michael Wood's classic book overturns preconceptions of the Dark Ages as a shadowy and brutal era, showing them to be a richly exciting and formative period in the history of Britain.

Book excerpt: Rob Roy by Sir Walter Scott is a historical fiction novel that includes a character based on Robert Roy MacGregor. It is part of the Waverley novels, a series of Scott's books that focused on Scottish history. The setting of Rob Roy is Scotland just before the Jacobite rising of 1715. The narrator and main character of the story is the Englishman Frank Osbaldistone. Frank has a fight with his father because he does not want to join the family business. Because of the fight, Frank's father sends him to stay with his uncle, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone, who is a Jacobite. On his way to his uncle's house, Frank bumps into Rob Roy, the outlaw, who is disguised as a man named Mr. Campbell. Frank also meets Diana Vernon, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's niece, and eventually falls in love with her. Rashleigh, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone's son, steals financial documents essential to the Osbaldistone family and escapes to Scotland. Frank decides to get help from Rob Roy in order to restore his father's honor. The Jacobite risings break out and in the battle Rashleigh tries to kill Frank, but Rob Roy kills Rashleigh before he can do so. In the end, Frank inherits the Osbaldistone estate and marries Diana. While Rob Roy is a mysterious and minor character in the book, he is instrumental in the final fight against Rashleigh. More than anything, Rob Roy and the Jacobite risings set the stage for the other characters to develop in this historical fiction novel.
