Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autonav/Dot Project: Baseline Measurement System for Evaluation of Roadway Departure Warning Systems Several types of evaluations can be conducted to obtain an overall performance evaluation of a roadway departure warning system. A preliminary evaluation is usually conducted prior to a field operational test in order to determine the safety and reliability of the warning system under a controlled set of circumstances. The results of a preliminary evaluation are used to design and implement a full - scale field operational test involving a large number of drivers operating under normal everyday driving conditions. A scenario for a preliminary evaluation of a roadway departure warning system is described in this section. This scenario drove the design and implementation of a performance measurement system called the baseline measurement system (bms). The following list highlights some general attributes of a preliminary evaluation. Ability to generate a large number of roadway departure incidents. Ability to record the response of the warning system to each incident. Ability to establish a baseline, that is, the correct operation expected from the warning system, and to compare the output of the warning system against the baseline in a quantitative manner. Ability to perform evaluations on real roads not just on a closed test tracks. Ability to perform evaluations in wide variety of environmental conditions: lighting, weather, etc. Ability to perform the evaluations in a cost - effective manner. Book Guidelines for Conducting and Calibrating Road Roughness Measurements

Download or read book Guidelines for Conducting and Calibrating Road Roughness Measurements written by Michael W. Sayers and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road roughness is gaining increasing importance as an indicator of road condition, both in terms of pavement performance, and as a major determinant of road user costs. This paper defines roughness measurement systems hierachically into four groups, ranging from profilometric methods (2 groups), through response type road roughness measuring systems (RTRRMS's), and, subjective evaluation. The International Roughness Index (IRI) is defined, and the programs for it's calculation are provided. The IRI is based on simulation of the roughness response of a car travelling at 80 km/h. The report explains how all roughness measurements can be related to this scale, also when travelling at lower speeds than 80 km/h. The IRI emerges as a scale that can be used both for calibration and for comparative purposes.

Book Highway Research

Download or read book Highway Research written by David J. Wise and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users authorized the Dept. of Transportation (DoT) to establish a highway research program to address future challenges facing the U.S. highway system. In 2006, the Second Strategic Highway Research Program was established to conduct research in four areas -- safety, renewal, reliability, and capacity. The legislation also required a review of the program no later than three years after the first research contracts were awarded. This report provides information about the process for selecting the program's projects for funding, the projects' status, and what, if any, research was eliminated because of funding and time constraints. Book Automated Vehicle Location Data Recording Friction Measurement and Applicator Control for Winter Road Maintenance

Download or read book Automated Vehicle Location Data Recording Friction Measurement and Applicator Control for Winter Road Maintenance written by Gurkan Erdogan and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this project conducted a detailed evaluation of the ability of a new friction measurement system to provide an accurate measure of road conditions. A system that records friction coefficient as a function of road location was developed using the same vehicle location measurement system as the current MDSS project. Studies conducted show that the friction measurement system provides a significantly more reliable measure of road surface conditions than does visual inspection. The second part of this project focused on a detailed evaluation of the performance of a closed-loop system that utilizes friction measurement for automatic applicator control. Experimental studies have shown that a friction measurement based zero velocity sander can adequately apply salt/chemicals to all slippery spots on a road at speeds up to 25 mph. The final part of this project focused on enhancement of the developed automatic applicator control system with utilization of real-time data from a geographical information system that provides information on upcoming geometric road alignment and known problematic segments of roadway. The developed friction measurement, data recording and applicator control system is compact, modular and can be used on both snowplows and pick-up trucks.
