All the stops are on public land, plus Chutes Provincial Park.

This short geologic guidebook takes you through the Paleoproterozoic (Precambrian) sedimentary and igneous deposits of the Huronian Supergroup. The Huronian is a package of rocks that represents a passive margin sequence in deep time. Similar to modern continental margins like the American Gulf of Mexico coast. It just formed over 2.4 billion years earlier. You might be like, "But that's the middle of the continent". Yes, it is. But 2.5 billion years ago, it was the site of a rift that formed something similar to the Atlantic Ocean. Then over the next couple of billion years, other continental fragments and island arcs would accrete to North America until it grew to its present size. In the Espanola area we have a relatively complete exposure of the Huronian from the north where the oldest rocks are, to the south where the youngest ones are. The rocks also record the arrival of free oxygen in the atmosphere and the oldest glacial deposits.

The Precambrian rocks explored are as old as Archean but most are of the younger Paleoproterozoic Huronian Supergroup. These rocks are 2.5 billion to 2.2 billion years old and were deposited during a great time of change on Earth. This is the first time we see modern Plate Tectonics in action. Oxygen was being pumped into the atmosphere for the first time. It is also a time of glaciation, perhaps the oldest.

Others no less important remain hidden in plain sight. During the last 3 billion years Ontario has been witness to giant tectonic collisions as North America collided in turn with South America and Africa creating huge mountains now long gone. Many of Ontario's northern rocks originated as magma on ancient ocean floors long before life flourished. The province has been dented by fiery meteorites, drifted across the equator, been flooded by tropical seas rich in marine life and scraped bare by ice sheets. Ontario's rich geologic history is illustrated here by short descriptions of more than 200 field sites ranging from Timmins in the north to Windsor in the south.
