Book Proposed Roads to Freedom

Download or read book Proposed Roads to Freedom written by Bertrand Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proposed Roads to Freedom: Socialism, Anarchism and Syndicalism This book is an attempt to compress into a small compass a discussion which would require many vol umes for its adequate treatment. It was completed in April, 1918, in the last days before a period of imprisonment. At that time few would have ven tured to prophesy that the fighting would end before the New Year. The coming of peace has made the problems of reconstruction the more urgent. The author has attempted to examine briefly the growth and scope of those pro-war doctrines which aimed at fundamental economic change. These doctrines are considered first historically, then critically, and it is urged that, while none can be accepted en bloc, all have something to contribute to the picture of the future society which we should wish to create. Book Proposed Roads to Freedom

Download or read book Proposed Roads to Freedom written by Bertrand Russell and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completed in April 1918, "in the last days before a period of imprisonment," 'The Proposed Roads to Freedom' contains Bertrand Russell's astute political commentary on anarchism, socialism, and syndicalism. Russell begins with a historical overview of socialism and anarchism, the teachings and organizations of Marx and Bakunin, and the syndicalist revolt against socialism. He then turns to more pressing problems of the future, and how these movements could contribute to reconstruction after the war. Although he has criticism for each movement, Russell respected what they attempted to achieve. "What is new in Socialism and Anarchism is that close relations of the ideal to the present sufferings of men, which has enabled powerful political movements to grow out of the hopes of solitary thinkers. It is this that makes Socialism and Anarchism important, and it is this that makes them dangerous to those who batten, consciously or unconsciously, upon the evils of our present order of society." Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) was a mathematician, philosopher, pacifist, and winner of the 1950 Nobel Prize for literature. As a president of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, he opposed war and nuclear weapons and also advocated world government and peacemaking. The Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation was created in 1963 and it publishes a journal, 'The Spokesman'.

Book excerpt: First published in 1996. Bertrand Russell wrote after the dawning of the Russian Revolution, at the time when Europe seemed on the verge of political dissolution. In this powerful work of political and social analysis Russell examines the main roads to freedom that we have constructed for ourselves since the nineteenth century. He discusses the great Utopian and egalitarian movements, ranging from the most moderate and democratic guise of Socialism to the most fanatical embodiment of Anarchism.

Book excerpt: The Proposed Roads to Freedom is a treatise by the philosopher Bertrand Russell, which contemplates a society in which anarcho-communism is coupled with worker syndicalism. Russell discusses various aspects of socialist-communist and syndicalist thought, and applies them to the various portions of civil society. Beginning with an examination of the history of the political theories and their potential for success, Russell proposes a sort of 'guild socialism' whereby workers are organized into different groupings and specialisms, as opposed to the centralized, bureaucratic system advocated by state socialism. Although Russell believes that the socialist system would be the closest to perfection, he does not believe that it would be entirely lacking of flaws. Furthermore, Russell attributes many problems of the theory as solvable over time; a fine-tuning of the technical implementation of socialist economics would, so the author proposes, iron out the problems and inefficiencies in the system. A lifelong socialist, Russell believed that the correct implementation of left-wing theory could result in the greatest possible amount of happiness and prosperity among a given country's citizens. The author defined freedom as economic and social enfranchisement shared equitably among the workers of society and posits that this, together with well-funded practice of the arts and sciences, was the optimum way for humans to be organized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roads to Freedom, written at the close of World War I in 1918, the British philosopher Bertrand Russell compares and contrasts three tendencies of socialist thought: Marxism (which Russell refers to as “State Socialism” or simply “Socialism”), Anarchism, and Syndicalism. After giving a historical outline of each ideology, Russell goes on to examine whether the ideal societies proposed by these ideologies would be practicable in reality and how issues such as wages, crime, international relations, art, and science would be addressed by these societies. He comes to the conclusion that the best practicable society is a form of Guild Socialism incorporating some of the proposals of Anarchism, like universal provision of basic needs.
