Book Curious Travellers

Download or read book Curious Travellers written by Mary-Ann Constantine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curious Travellers: Writing the Welsh Tour, 1760-1820 provides the first extensive literary study of British tours of Wales in the Romantic period (c.1760-1820). It examines writers' responses to Welsh landscapes and communities at a time of drastic economic, environmental, and political change. Opening with an overview of Welsh tours up to the early 1700s, Mary-Ann Constantine shows how the intensely intertextual nature of the genre imbued particular sites and locations with meaning. She next draws upon a range of manuscript and published sources to trace a circular tour of the country, unpicking moments of cultural entanglement and revealing how travel-writing shaped understanding of Wales and Welshness within the wider British polity. Wales became a popular destination for visitors following the publication of Thomas Pennant's Tours in Wales in the late 1770s. Hundreds of travel-accounts from the period are extant, yet few (particularly those by women) have been studied in depth. Wales proves, in these narratives, as much a place of disturbance as a picturesque haven--a potent mixture of medieval past and industrial present, exposed down its west coast to the threat of invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. From castles to copper-mines, Constantine explores the full potential of tour writing as an idiosyncratic genre at the interface of literature and history, arguing for its vital importance to broader cultural and environmental studies.

Book Roads and Tracks for Historians

Download or read book Roads and Tracks for Historians written by Brian Paul Hindle and published by Phillimore. This book was released on 2001 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the roads we use today are tarmaced extensions of pre-existing roads and trackways and whilst some of these early roads will have been deliberately planned and built, others will have developed over time by the passage of traffic over the same route. Paul Hindle's history is a revised and updated version of a book long out of print, Roads, Tracks and their Interpretation. In it he looks at the development of roads through time, though focusing largely on the Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods, and their function in facilitating the movement of people, animals, agricultural produce and other goods, and the military. Based on documentary evidence, maps and fieldwork observations, this is a good guide to understanding the development of the roads and tracks that criss-cross Britain.

Book The Secret History of the Roman Roads of Britain

Download or read book The Secret History of the Roman Roads of Britain written by M.C. Bishop and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many books on Britain's Roman roads, but none have considered in any depth their long-term strategic impact. Mike Bishop shows how the road network was vital not only in the Roman strategy of conquest and occupation, but influenced the course of British military history during subsequent ages. ??The author starts with the pre-Roman origins of the network (many Roman roads being built over prehistoric routes) before describing how the Roman army built, developed, maintained and used it. Then, uniquely, he moves on to the post-Roman history of the roads. He shows how they were crucial to medieval military history (try to find a medieval battle that is not near one) and the governance of the realm, fixing the itinerary of the royal progresses. Their legacy is still clear in the building of 18th century military roads and even in the development of the modern road network. Why have some parts of the network remained in use throughout??The text is supported with clear maps and photographs. ??Most books on Roman roads are concerned with cataloguing or tracing them, or just dealing with aspects like surveying. This one makes them part of military landscape archaeology.
