Book Human Factors in Intelligent Transportation Systems

Download or read book Human Factors in Intelligent Transportation Systems written by Woodrow Barfield and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Program is a cooperative effort by government, private industry, and academia to apply advanced technology to the task of resolving the problems of surface transportation. The objective is to improve travel efficiency and mobility, enhance safety, conserve energy, provide economic benefits, and protect the environment. The current demand for mobility has exceeded the available capacity of the roadway system. Because the highway system cannot be expanded, except in minor ways, the available capacity must be used more efficiently to handle the increased demand. ITS applies advanced information processing, communication, sensing, and computer control technologies to the problems of surface transportation. Considerable research and development efforts will be required to produce these new technologies and to convert technologies developed in the defense and space programs to solve surface transportation problems. ITS has been subdivided into six interlocking technology areas. This book addresses human factors concerns for four of these areas: * Advanced Traveler Information Systems are a variety of systems that provide real time, in-vehicle information to drivers regarding navigation and route guidance, motorist services, roadway signing, and hazard warnings. * Advanced Vehicle Control Systems refer to systems that aid drivers in controlling their vehicle particularly in emergency situations and ultimately taking over some or all of the driving tasks. * Commercial Vehicle Operations address the application of ITS technologies to the special needs of commercial roadway vehicles including automated vehicle identification, location, weigh-in-motion, clearance sensing, and record keeping. * Advanced Traffic Management Systems monitor, control and manage traffic on streets and highways to reduce congestion using vehicle route diversion, automated signal timing, changeable message signs, and priority control systems. Two technical areas are not specifically addressed in individual chapters, but many aspects of them are covered in associated chapters: * Advanced Rural Transportation Systems include systems that apply ITS technologies to the special needs of rural systems and include emergency notification and response, vehicle location, and traveler information. * Advanced Public Transportation Systems enhance the effectiveness, attractiveness and economics of public transportation and include fleet management, automated fare collection, and real-time information systems.

Book Implementing Automated Road Transport Systems in Urban Settings

Download or read book Implementing Automated Road Transport Systems in Urban Settings written by Adriano Alessandrini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing Automated Road Transport Systems in Urban Settings provides valuable, objective, often difficult-to-obtain data, gleaned from the largest demonstration project on automated road transport systems (ARTS) in the world to date. The book features chapters authored by those deeply involved in CityMobil2—providing an easily accessible, cross-referenced resource for data and information on each aspect of the project. Chapters cover vehicle technical specifications, infrastructure analysis, operating systems, future scenario analysis, automated and conventional vehicle comparisons, and legal frameworks for system implementation. The book examines project field tests, showing the technology’s adaptability and different requirements based on geographic location. Government officials, researchers, and transportation practitioners require real-world data and analysis in their efforts to bring automated and intelligent transport systems into the mainstream. The CityMobil2 demonstration transported more than 60,000 passengers in seven European cities, providing immense amounts of feedback and data to be analyzed. The book provides international expert opinion on this real-world data, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the project, as well as providing comparisons to both past and planned ARTS demonstration initiatives. The technical specifications developed from the project will help cities considering similar ARTS initiatives. Presents real-world data and valuable analysis from CityMobil2, the world’s largest demonstration project on automated road transport systems (ARTS) Assists policy makers seeking to implement their own ARTS, providing technical specifications, infrastructure analysis, as well as legal considerations Features a companion website with links to CityMobil2 demonstration videos, as well as links to detailed project documents Presents findings from CityMobil2, such as effects on daily trips per capita, average journey distance, and occupancy rate, and how they can affect the development of future ARTS projects Provides future ARTS scenario analysis, with information on planned, similar demonstrations

Book Development of Human Factors Guidelines for Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Commercial Vehicle Operations

Download or read book Development of Human Factors Guidelines for Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Commercial Vehicle Operations written by Thomas A. Dingus and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Task A was to conduct a literature review of human factors-applicable articles associated with Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and ATIS-related commercial vehicle operations (CVO) systems. Specifically, Task A was to assess existing human factors guidelines to determine their applicability to ATIS systems and identify research gaps that would be filled to establish complete and comprehensive ATIS guidelines. As with any literature review, the conduct of Task A was treated as a foundation for subsequent tasks.
