Book Road to Rouen

Download or read book Road to Rouen written by Ben Hatch and published by Headline. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ben Hatch is on the road again. Commissioned to write a guidebook about France (despite not speaking any French) he sets off with visions of relaxing chateaux and refined dining. Ten thousand miles later his family's been attacked by a donkey, had a run-in with a death-cult and, after a near drowning and a calamitous wedding experience involving a British spy, his own marriage is in jeopardy. A combination of obsessions about mosquitoes, French gravel and vegetable theme parks mean it's a bumpy ride as Ben takes a stand against tyrannical French pool attendants, finds himself running with the bulls in Pamplona and almost starring in a snuff movie after a near fatal decision to climb into a millionaire's Chevrolet Blazer. Funny and poignant, Road to Rouen asks important questions about life, marriage and whether it's ever acceptable to tape baguette to your children's legs to smuggle lunch into Disneyland Paris.

Book Burning Tanks and an Empty Desert

Download or read book Burning Tanks and an Empty Desert written by John Philip Jones and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Successes and Sacrifices of the British Army in 1914 This work is a study of military history from the top down and also from the bottom up. It describes a brigade—four thousand men—of the old British Regular Army that fought in the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914. This army was of the highest quality but was very small. The book describes the strategy and tactics of the fighting, in which the British played a major role. But the work also describes the fighting from the point of view of junior officers and men in the ranks from the bottom up. Johnny: The Legend and Tragedy of General Sir Ian Hamilton Hamilton was a heroic leader of men. He had an extremely successful career until his last and biggest campaign, the assault on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. This was a disaster because Hamilton, despite all his other qualities, was an inadequate strategist. General Sir Roger Wheeler, chief of the general staff and professional head of the British Army, wrote an enthusiastic foreword to the book. It was also very favourably received by the Royal United Services Institute. Battles of a Gunner Officer: Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy and the Long Road to Germany This book describes some of the most important campaigns fought by the British army during the Second World War. The unique feature of the book is that the campaigns are revealed through the eyes of a successful battery commander in the Royal Artillery (widely considered to be the most successful individual element of the British army). General Sir Richard Barrons, a senior serving officer and head of the Joint Forces Command, wrote the foreword to the book and commented on the unique nature of the work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said "those who [do not] remember the past are [doomed] to repeat it." - George Santayana But sometimes necessary secrets trap one in an endless cycle of tragedy. Jillian, a divorced researcher, travels to Urbino, Italy, to get away from life in the United States. While she explores the winding cobblestone streets of the mountaintop town, she encounters a man from the Renaissance. Initially, she thinks he is a costumed tour guide, then she learns he is a ghost with a strange story. Rouen is cursed to wander within the boundaries of Urbino for a thousand years. Jillian is the first person in over a century to notice that he exists. Although it goes against his better judgement, he befriends the woman. Jillian feels sorry for Rouen and decides to see if anything can be done to put his soul to rest. As she turns page after page in the archives, she learns there is much more to Rouen’s story than he shared. What she discovers rewrites the historical narrative of one of England’s most famous rulers. Ignoring Rouen’s warnings to stop pursuing secrets of the past, Jillian’s discovery draws her into Rouen’s world and the dangers that lurk there. Shocked to find herself living history instead of writing it, Jillian is faced with the choice of sharing what she knows with the world, or allowing Rouen to slip silently back into the shadows of the past.
