Book No Accident

    Book Details:
  • Author : Neil Arason
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2014-04-29
  • ISBN : 1554589657

Download or read book No Accident written by Neil Arason and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is possible to eliminate death and serious injury from Canada’s roads. In other jurisdictions, the European Union, centres in the United States, and at least one automotive company aim to achieve comparable results as early as 2020. In Canada, though, citizens must turn their thinking on its head and make road safety a national priority. Since the motor vehicle first went into mass production, the driver has taken most of the blame for its failures. In a world where each person’s safety is dependent on a system in which millions of drivers must drive perfectly over billions of hours behind the wheel, failure on a massive scale has been the result. When we neglect the central role of the motor vehicle as a dangerous consumer product, the result is one of the largest human-made means for physically assaulting human beings. It is time for Canadians to embrace internationally recognized ways of thinking and enter an era in which the motor vehicle by-product of human carnage is relegated to history. No Accident examines problems related to road safety and makes recommendations for the way forward. Topics include types of drivers; human-related driving errors related to fatigue, speed, alcohol, and distraction and roads; pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit; road engineering; motor vehicle regulation; auto safety design; and collision-avoidance technologies such as radar and camera-based sensors on vehicles that prevent crashes. This multi-disciplinary study demystifies the world of road safety and provides a road map for the next twenty years.

Book Driver Behaviour and Training

Download or read book Driver Behaviour and Training written by Dr Lisa Dorn and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-09-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on driver behaviour over the past three decades has clearly demonstrated that the goals and motivations a driver brings to the driving task are important determinants for driver behaviour. The objective of the book, and of the International Conference on Driver Behaviour and Training on which it is based, is to describe and discuss recent advances in the study of driving behaviour and driver training. It bridges the gap between practitioners and theoreticians investigating driving behaviour, from a number of different perspectives and related disciplines. A major focus is to consider how driver training needs to be adapted to take into account individual differences, in order to raise awareness of how these may contribute to unsafe driving behaviour. From this it goes on to promote the development of driver training courses that consider all the skills that are essential for road safety. The effect of road environment and in-vehicle technology is also debated with reference to driver responses. The book is timely in its aim of defining new approaches to improving road safety based on many years of empirical research on driver behaviour. The contributing researchers and professionals are encouraged to consider the applications of their work for reducing the risk of crash involvement, with a strong emphasis on driver training. The readership includes researchers from a variety of different academic backgrounds, practitioners from regulatory authorities, vehicle manufacturers and organisations concerned with improving road safety.

Book Non Motorized Transport Integration into Urban Transport Planning in Africa

Download or read book Non Motorized Transport Integration into Urban Transport Planning in Africa written by Winnie V. Mitullah and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What challenges do pedestrians and cyclists face in cities of the developing world? What opportunities do these cities have to provide for walking and cycling? Based on in-depth research conducted in Cape Town (South Africa), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya), this book explores these questions by presenting work on walking and cycling travel behaviour, the status of road safety in these cities, as well as an analysis of the infrastructure for walking and cycling, and the workings of the institutions responsible for planning for these modes. The book also presents case studies relating to particular opportunities and challenges, such as the development and evaluation of ‘walking bus’ interventions, and the opportunities micro-simulation of pedestrian interventions offers within a data-scarce environment. Non-motorized Transport Integration into Urban Transport Planning in Africa demonstrates that transport and urban planning remains situated in a logic of automobile-dependent transport planning and global city development. This logic of practice does not pay adequate attention to walking and cycling. It argues that a significant shift in both policy as well as political commitment is needed so as to prioritize walking and cycling as strategies for sustainable transport policy in urban Africa. This book will be a key text for practitioners and policy makers working in planning, transport policy and urban development in Africa, as well as students and scholars of African studies, development studies, urban geography, transport studies and sustainable development.
