Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three starred reviews! “Harrowing but deeply illuminating.” —School Library Journal A young boy gets detained by ICE while crossing the border from Mexico to the United States in this timely and unflinching novel by award-winning author Alexandra Diaz. The bed creaks under Santiago’s shivering body. They say a person’s life flashes by before dying. But it’s not his whole life. Just the events that led to this. The important ones, and the ones Santiago would rather forget. The coins in Santiago’s hand are meant for the bus fare back to his abusive abuela’s house. Except he refuses to return; he won’t be missed. His future is uncertain until he meets the kind, maternal María Dolores and her young daughter, Alegría, who help Santiago decide what comes next: He will accompany them to el otro lado, the United States of America. They embark with little, just backpacks with water and a bit of food. To travel together will require trust from all parties, and Santiago is used to going it alone. None of the three travelers realizes that the journey through Mexico to the border is just the beginning of their story.

Download or read book Water Safety Plan Manual written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, the WHO Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality recommended that water suppliers develop and implement "Water Safety Plans" (WSPs) in order to systematically assess and manage risks. Since this time, governments and regulators, water suppliers and practitioners have increasingly embraced this approach, but they have also requested further guidance. This much-anticipated workbook answers this call by describing how to develop and implement a WSP in clear and practical terms. Stepwise advice is provided through 11 learning modules, each representing a key step in the WSP development and implementation process: 1. Assemble the WSP team; 2. Describe the water supply system; 3. Identify hazards and hazardous events and assess the risks; 4. Determine and validate control measures, reassess and prioritise the risks; 5. Develop, implement and maintain an improvement/upgrade plan; 6. Define monitoring of the control measures; 7. Verify the effectiveness of the WSP; 8. Prepare management procedures; 9. Develop supporting programmes; 10. Plan and carry out periodic review of the WSP; 11. Revise the WSP following an incident ; Every Module is divided into three sections: 'Overview', 'Examples and Tools', and 'Case studies'. The overview section provides a brief introduction to the Module, including why it is important and how it fits into the overall WSP development and implementation process. It outlines key activities that should be carried out, lists typical challenges that may be encountered, and summarizes the essential outputs to be produced. The examples and tools section provides resources which could be adapted to support the development and implementation of WSPs. These resources include example tables and checklists, template forms, diagrams, or practical tips to help a WSP team address specific challenges. These are often example outputs and methodologies adapted from recent WSP experiences. Each Module concludes with case studies so the reader can benefit from lessons-learned from real-life experiences. They are intended to make WSP concepts more concrete and to help readers anticipate issues and challenges that may arise. The descriptions were drawn from WSP initiatives in Australia, the Latin American and the Caribbean region (LAC), and the United Kingdom.

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Download or read book A Pictorial History and Trekking Guide of the Wilderness Road written by Daniel W. Weidner EdD DLitt and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the history of the Wilderness Road and a trekking guide with photos. It presents the background of how Daniel Boone and a group of some thirty men blazed a trail by way of three states to connect Kingsport, Tennessee, to Middlesboro, Kentucky, and became an important roadway in modern-day industrial United States. Its beginning opened the east to the west for what was the early pioneering spirit of pioneers that settled those lands along with early tradesmen and stockmen. Its importance became famous with the discovery of iron ore in its environs of Middleboro; that is a story of unfounded lasting wealth that ended with disappointment for those of the area and Englishmen who invested heavily only to have the grade of iron ore become useless. It played its role during the Civil War and its status today in a thriving city. It stands as a monument to Daniel Boone and the thirty men who created it, the undaunted pioneer men and women who faced and conquered natural and human hardships that made it a lasting monument to humanity as part of the history of the United States.

Download or read book The Book of Generations written by Mansour Ajami and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Mansour Ajami was born during World War II in Saghbine, a poverty-stricken Lebanese village that had remained virtually unchanged since the Middle Ages. His autobiography, The Book of Generations: A Reunion with Memory, traces his adaptation to the culture and thought of twenty-first-century America. With a humorous, offbeat perspective, Ajami presents the inevitable culture clashes that shaped his intellectual evolution. He recounts ancient folklore and medieval church practices, the discovery of luscious and accomplished Western women, and the ways of poor fathers and obdurate donkeys. Whether he is beguiling American university students with seemingly preposterous snake stories or dealing with the tragic loss of his first child, Ajami's humor and emotion translate universally. The Book of Generations ends with a soliloquy on a possible future in which he sees himself alone in the world, musing on the necessity of inventing spaceships, computer chips, and potato chips, and on the avoidance of long johns and obtuse grammar. The magically realistic and easy-to-understand stories in The Book of Generations: A Reunion with Memory, from peasant cures for illness to the hustle and bustle of modern society, provide Ajami's perception of the human condition.
