  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-07-04
  • ISBN : 3030765717
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book RNA Damage and Repair written by Ioly Kotta-Loizou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a macromolecule that plays a central role in cell physiology: RNA molecules act as intermediates between the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), where genetic information is stored, and proteins, which perform the necessary functions within the cell. Traditionally, the structural and functional properties of RNA are closely linked to gene expression. However, RNA-based enzymes, called ribozymes, are also involved in catalysis and small RNAs regulate key cellular processes, such as cell growth, division, differentiation, aging and death. RNA is a sensitive macromolecule that can be easily damaged by environmental conditions (ultraviolet radiation, oxidative stress) and biological factors (ribonucleases, ribotoxins, CRISPR-Cas systems). Therefore, cells have developed mechanisms to protect and/or repair RNA molecules. This book presents an overview of the biology of RNA damage, protection and repair in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Individual chapters cover the expression regulation, enzymology and physiological role of such systems, and link them to important human diseases such as cancer and degenerative diseases.

Book Genetics and Biotechnology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ulrich Kück
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662103648
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Genetics and Biotechnology written by Ulrich Kück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology, the study of fungi, originated as a subdiscipline of botany and was a descriptive discipline, largely neglected as an experimental science until the early years of this century. A seminal paper by Blakeslee in 1904 provided evidence for self incompatibility, termed "heterothallism", and stimulated interest in studies related to the control of sexual reproduction in fungi by mating-type specificities. Soon to follow was the demonstration that sexually reproducing fungi exhibit Mendelian inheritance and that it was possible to conduct formal genetic analysis with fungi. The names Burgeff, Kniep and Lindegren are all associated with this early period of fungal genetics research. These studies and the discovery of penicillin by Fleming, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1945, provided further impetus for experimental research with fungi. Thus began a period of interest in mutation induction and analysis of mutants for bio chemical traits. Such fundamental research, conducted largely with Neurospora crassa, led to the one gene: one enzyme hypothesis and to a second Nobel Prize for fungal research awarded to Beadle and Tatum in 1958. Fundamental research in biochemical genetics was extended to other fungi, especially to Saccharomyces cere visiae, and by the mid-1960s fungal systems were much favored for studies in eukaryotic molecular biology and were soon able to compete with bacterial systems in the molecular arena.

Book Omics and its Integration A Systems Biology Approach to Understanding Plant Physiology

Download or read book Omics and its Integration A Systems Biology Approach to Understanding Plant Physiology written by Kashif Ali and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the complexity and interconnectivity of many biological processes, an integrative systems biology approach is required to better understand them. The integration of various omics data (including genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics data) will provide a holistic view that highlights the relationship among the various biomolecules and their functions in plant growth, resistance, quality, and many other important traits. Recent advances in analytical power and in the ability to process large data sets has enabled researchers to integrate multi-omics data and have a much deeper knowledge of the cell, tissue, organ, or even an entire organism being studied. The goal of this Research Topic is not only to publish high-quality and reliable omics data but also to answer the bigger question of how to integrate and correlate different data sets from multiple omics studies. Can one omics data set be used as a primary data set for the design and execution of another omics study? If so, then how it can be done? What are its pre-requisites? How can we plan research involving multi-omics approach to reach a meaningful conclusion? These are the questions that need our attention and their answers are critical for the future of omics-based research. For this Research Topic, we welcome contributors to submit manuscripts related to the following themes: • Studies on plant-based genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics; • Development of new analytical methods for omics utilizing in plants; • Advancements in the current analytical methods for utilizing omics in plants; • Integration of multi-omics data sets; • Development of new statistical methods for data analysis.

Book Protein Conformational Dynamics

Download or read book Protein Conformational Dynamics written by Ke-li Han and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how biological molecules exert their function and regulate biological processes, with a clear focus on how conformational dynamics of proteins are critical in this respect. In the last decade, the advancements in computational biology, nuclear magnetic resonance including paramagnetic relaxation enhancement, and fluorescence-based ensemble/single-molecule techniques have shown that biological molecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs) fluctuate under equilibrium conditions. The conformational and energetic spaces that these fluctuations explore likely contain active conformations that are critical for their function. More interestingly, these fluctuations can respond actively to external cues, which introduces layers of tight regulation on the biological processes that they dictate. A growing number of studies have suggested that conformational dynamics of proteins govern their role in regulating biological functions, examples of this regulation can be found in signal transduction, molecular recognition, apoptosis, protein / ion / other molecules translocation and gene expression. On the experimental side, the technical advances have offered deep insights into the conformational motions of a number of proteins. These studies greatly enrich our knowledge of the interplay between structure and function. On the theoretical side, novel approaches and detailed computational simulations have provided powerful tools in the study of enzyme catalysis, protein / drug design, protein / ion / other molecule translocation and protein folding/aggregation, to name but a few. This work contains detailed information, not only on the conformational motions of biological systems, but also on the potential governing forces of conformational dynamics (transient interactions, chemical and physical origins, thermodynamic properties). New developments in computational simulations will greatly enhance our understanding of how these molecules function in various biological events.
