Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This epic biography, a gripping insider's account, is a long-overdue chronicle of the life and times of Mohammad Reza Shah, who ruled from 1941 to 1979 as the last Iranian monarch. Gholam Reza Afkhami uses his unparalleled access to a large number of individuals—including high-ranking figures in the shah's regime, members of his family, and members of the opposition—to depict the unfolding of the shah's life against the forces and events that shaped the development of modern Iran. The first major biography of the Shah in twenty-five years, this richly detailed account provides a radically new perspective on key events in Iranian history, including the 1979 revolution, U.S.-Iran relations, and Iran's nuclear program. It also sheds new light on what now drives political and cultural currents in a country at the heart of today's most perplexing geopolitical dilemmas.

Book Riza Shah Pahlavi

Download or read book Riza Shah Pahlavi written by Donald Newton Wilber and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When first published in 1975, this book for the first time in any language was the full-length study of Riza [Reza] Shah Pahlavi and his time. His participation in the coup d'etat of 1921 marked the opening stage of resurrection of Iran [Persia], while his coronation in 1926 as the first monarch of the Pahlavi dynasty marked the unfolding of its reconstruction. This is the story of a man who loved his country more than life itself. Born in 1878, starting on a career as a soldier with little education and no fortune, he became an absolute monarch, implacable on his hatred of foreign influence, demanding of himself and his people. Rising through the ranks of the army, holding council with no one, Riza Shah envisaged a modern and powerful nation, and when the opportunity came he seized it--striving to unite the villagers, the nomads, the city dwellers into a strongly nationalistic, progressive country"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: The son of the deposed Shah of Iran reflects on Iran's political situation (without mentioning his father) and argues for a campaign of civil disobedience to the current Iranian regime that would hopefully lead to a constitutional monarchy restoring a Pahlavi to the throne of Iran. He discusses energy policy, foreign policy, and the Iranian Diaspora suggesting that the policies of the current clerical leaders of Iran have led to disastrous results for the Iranian people. He counters this with some rather bland bromides about international cooperation, secularization, self-determination, and cultural preservation. If brought back to the throne, he claims he will consult all of the Iranian people in governing the nation. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book The Making of Modern Iran

Download or read book The Making of Modern Iran written by Dr Stephanie Cronin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, by a distinguished group of specialists, offers a new and exciting interpretation of Riza Shah's Iran. A period of key importance, the years between 1921-1941 have, until now, remained relatively neglected. Recently, however, there has been a marked revival of interest in the history of these two decades and this collection brings together some of the best of this recent new scholarship. Illustrating the diversity and complexity of interpretations to which contemporary scholarship has given rise, the collection looks at both the high politics of the new state and at 'history from below', examining some of the fierce controversies which have arisen surrounding such issues as the gender politics of the new regime, the nature of its nationalism, and its treatment of minorities.

Book An Enduring Love

Download or read book An Enduring Love written by Farah Pahlavi and published by Miramax Books. This book was released on 2005-04-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving story of the former Empress of Iran -- now in paperback. At the age of twenty-one, Farah Diba married the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi. A loving marriage, the raising of four children, and a devotion to social and cultural causes marked her early years as queen, although there were already signs of grave national diversions on the horizon. Twenty years later the dream had turned into a nightmare: demonstrations and riots shook the country, and Farah and the Shah decided to leave in order to avoid bloodshed. With the hardcover publication of An Enduring Love, a New York Times bestseller (extended list) in 2004, Farah Diba, wife of the last emperor of Iran, broke her silence and told the wrenching story of her love for a man and his country. Her compelling memoir offers an intimate view of a time of upheaval, but stands above all as a powerful human document from one whose life was caught up in an epic and tragic national struggle.

Download or read book The Pahlavi Dynasty written by Gholamali Haddad Adel and published by EWI Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pahlavi dynasty consisted of only two monarchs, a father and his son, who ruled Iran for a total of 54 years, from 1925 to 1979. The present book deals with the meteoric rise of Reza Khan from an unknown reserve infantry soldier in Iran’s Cossack regiment to the autocratic king and the life and times of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, known in the West as the Shah, whose reign was brought to an end by 1979 Islamic Revolution. The Pahlavis were Iran’s last dynasty and their downfall brought an abrupt end to over two millennia of monarchical rule in the land historically known as Persia. This book is part of a series of translations from the Encyclopaedia of the World of Islam (EWI) which was originally compiled in Persian. Other entries from this encyclopaedia which are available in English include Hadith, Hawza-yi ‘Ilmiyya, History and Historiography, Muslim Organisations, Political Parties, Qur’anic Exegeses, Sufism, and Education in the Islamic Civilisation.

Book History of 20 Years of Governing and Reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi Volume II 1304 1320

Download or read book History of 20 Years of Governing and Reign of Reza Shah Pahlavi Volume II 1304 1320 written by Ahmad Shahvary and published by . This book was released on 2012-11-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my book titled "From Assumption to the Reality; Iran-United States Relation from 1811 to 2007, I wrote: after the change of the regime in Iran, from Qajar to Pahlavi, for around ten years the England was the only foreign power that had influence in domestic as well foreign policies of Iran, till Ali Akbar Davar, then minister for finance, tried to enhance bilateral relations of Iran and the United States in the economic field. Davar succeeded to give an oil concession to Sinclair in 1936, but soon after became the victim of his venture and committed suicide... When Hitler became stronger in Europe, Reza Shah established better relations with the Germans hoping they could act as a counter-weight making equilibrium between England-Soviet Union rivalries. He invited handful German engineers that never exceeded of 300 persons, mainly for improvement of Iran's industry, the action which became essential pretext for occupation of Iran from the North and the South on August 25, 1941. Reza Shah had to leave the country and his son succeeded his father on September 16, 1941.During next 37 years, Iran passed a very hard time, during which the United States became the first foreign power in Iran in the most of the time. The United States was only real victorious power of the WWII; therefore this country successfully managed to become sole inheritor of Imperialist England who lost the grounds in all domains in the Middle East in general and Iran in particular to the United States... .The United States recommended Shah to enhance its revenue from the oil which lead to the nationalization of oil industry in Iran in 1952, but when they found that Dr. Mossadegh is not ready to loosen the law of nationalization they became his arch enemy... got what the wanted through a coup d'etat.By organizing the coup, the United States wanted to reach following goals, among other things:To install a weak Shah in the country; To get considerable share of the oil of Iran;To contain the influence of the Soviet Union; To create a rivalry among Iran and Saudi Arabia; To create weaponry competition in region,But at the mean time the immediate consequence of the coup was evaporating the popularity of the United States among Iranians... .This unpopularity at the end became a pretext for attacking the United States Embassy in Tehran after revolution of February 11, 1979. Moreover to me even the current enmity has root in the 1953 coup. Another immediate long consequence of 1953 coup was the loosening the position of the Shah in Iran. In fact, Shah never got heartily support of its people... .It would be great mistake if we blame the United States for all mishaps occurring in Iran to Shah and his reign. The character of Shah had an important role in his fate too. He was relatively a weak person in compare to his father Reza Shah who tried to cherish his son in his own way but could not do it. When Shah acceded to the throne, he was very young... . And later on, up to 1953, there were well experienced statesmen such as Foroughi, Qavam, Hakimi, who runs the country in a more or less safe passage but Shah had enmity with most of them. After the coup, he did not tolerate Ali Amini, or other experienced statesmen. He appointed young, inexperienced persons such as Alam, Eqbal, ...Shah especially after the aborted attack to his life in the Marmar Palace, on April 10, 1965 ... gradually isolated himself totally from the nation... .He thought that only way of ruling is to have an arrogant behavior, even with his closest servant... After all, there is no doubt that people of Iran has been the main loser of the Pahlavi rule in Iran for 55 years .... In 1979 after the departure of Shah from Iran, United States had to leave Iran too, and now it is near 34 years that there is no diplomatic relation between two countries and many thinks there would be a war which will weigh by the United States against Iran with this pretext that Iran is trying to build Atomic bombs.
