Book excerpt: This is a genealogical history of the McKneely families of South Carolina, Georgia and Louisiana. There are two branches to this Scotch-Irish family with this unique spelling. One that migrated from South Carolina to Georgia and then on to Texas and other parts of the expanding United States of America. Then there is the branch that left South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s with other families and settled in what at the time was West Florida. This area then was taken into the United States of America with the purchase of Florida from Spain and then became a part of Louisiana. The Louisiana branch resided in the Parishes called the Florida Parishes and stayed close to the area until after the First World War when the family began to migrate into other parts of the United States. You will find in this book two parts. One part covers the McKneely family that migrated to the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and the Second part that covers the McKneely family that first migrated to Georgia and then to Oklahoma and Texas. There is speculation but no proof that the two lines come from the common immigrant ancestor James McNealy with various spellings of McNealy. Look at the information and decide for yourself whether or not two lines could adopt a common spelling change, come from South Carolina and have common names and not be related to the common ancestor attached to the Louisiana McKneely clan. I have attempted to include as much detail as possible about each person. Personal stories are the spice of a genealogical work. I have included as many as possible and included them without edit. I am not a politically correct family historian. There may be some factually correct material that you may not like or that someone might tell you is not correct. Please read this account with the times and culture in mind as that is what makes the story a good one. Do not try to impress yourself on the story but put yourself into the times and places.

No one has seriously examined and written about the Grant families of southwestern Nova Scotia. That leaves a space for me to act in, and to develop a narrative history of a family founded in the soil, strengthened by the forest, and challenged by the sea environments that comprise the fundamental essence of Nova Scotia. And so, my passion has been to tell the story of my family and their relatives in southwestern Nova Scotia and to follow the paths of many of them to New England (especially to Massachusetts). Not only will you read about the hard-working and courageous children of John and Mary, but you will follow them and their offspring as they find love and marriage, sometimes with close or distant cousins. • You will ride or sail with them as they migrate within Nova Scotia and outward to New England. • You will wonder at their expressions of faith and sense their hidden, internal conflict as they make religious choices based on factors we can only imagine (spirituality, simplicity, availability, or energetic missionaries), reflected in obituaries, burial sites, or their answers to census questions. • You will share their sorrow at the deaths of loved ones through accident, disease, suicide, loss at sea or in the service of their country in war, particularly in World War I. • You will learn of their varied occupations, trades and professions, from farming, fishing and forestry to shoemaking, carpentry and sailing, nursing and teaching. • You will join them as they strive to become master mariners, volunteer in their churches, train young women with the YWCA in China, or succor the sick and wounded with the Red Cross in Siberia – follow them south to Boston and the Caribbean, east to Europe and across the Pacific to Asia. Only then you will come to understand why, at its core, my passion has been to be the voice of my direct ancestors and extended family within a defined framework of time and place, to record their activities where sources allow, in essence, to be the story they could not write.

Under the leadership of president Lon Bostick, the Genealogical Society of Christian County and the many devoted people of the county at large, gave untiringly of their time and knowledge to compile and have published a third history of Christian County in 1986 which is primarily a family history with much social history. The people responded well with material and the book was getting so large that we had to stop receiving family histories. This left many without the opportunity to get their families recorded. Late in 1990, Lon had a job started and was not complete therefore the Odd Fellows of Green River Lodge #54 of Hopkinsville and Jewel Rebekah Lodge #14 (the auxiliary of the Odd Fellows) met and voted to compile and have published a continuation of Volume I of the Family Histories to be titled Edition I of Family Histories of Christian County.
