Book Changing River Channels

Download or read book Changing River Channels written by A. M. Gurnell and published by . This book was released on 1995-12-04 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing River Channels is intended for all those with an interest in the dynamics of river channels and their management. Contributions are drawn from both the academic and river management communities and these provide perspectives based upon British, European and North American examples. The chapters are organised into four sections which consider the magnitude and dimensions of river channel adjustments over different timescales; the processes which influence those adjustments, focussing particularly upon the roles of sediment transport and storage, and of vegetation; the information sources that are available for assessing the degree and nature of change; and finally, perspectives on the management of changing river channels. This volume is one of two companion edited books to mark the contributions of Professors K.J. Gregory and D. E. Walling to research on drainage basin form and processes. Each presents a balanced range of contributions written by research colleagues and students.

Auszug: ...Des Marais and de Noailles took part, as well as Bossuet, in the struggle; indeed St Simon awards to the former the chief honours of the war: he was the rock against which Fenelon always dashed in vain.2 And even gentle, embarrassed de Noailles has lately found an admirer in M. Crousle--perhaps because Fenelon thought his pastoral more full of poison than even the utterances of Bossuet.3 There were many reasons for Bossuets wrath. Like his friends at Versailles, he thought mysticism rare and not very necessary; it should not be paraded in the streets, but be kept carefully hidden from the eyes of a world that would neither value nor understand it. He had little of the mystical temper himself; his magnificent imagination fastened only on hard realities, seeing far deeper into these than other men, but never travelling beyond them. He was no master in that vague cloud-land of Fenelons, where one chance word could stir whole tumults of emotion, set loose 1 Wks., ii. pp. 283 and ff. The Friend was Beauvilliers. 3 i. p. 416. The Pastoral, out of a helpless desire to spare Fenelons feelings, avoids mentioning him specially, and attacks Disinterestedness under the general head of Quietism, thus classing Fenelon with Molinos. Bossuet on the other hand, attacks the Maxims openly, but distinguishes between Quietism proper and the "Semi-Quietism " of the Maxims. See Fen. Wks., ii. pp. 463 and ff. whole trains of echoing fancy; his words were keen to hold the hearer tightly gripped, spell-bound before the majesty of fact. We must go to Parma and the Sistine Chapel for our parallel; if Fenelon was a Correggio in religion, Bossuet was its Michelangelo. Yet the painter of the Last Judgment stood...

Book Urban Stormwater and Flood Management

Download or read book Urban Stormwater and Flood Management written by Veeriah Jegatheesan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the experiences of engineers and scientists from Australia and the United Kingdom providing the current status on the management of stormwater and flooding in urban areas and suggesting ways forward. It forms a basis for the development of a framework for the implementation of integrated and optimised storm water management strategies and aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of the expanding urban water footprint. Among other topics it also features management styles of stormwater and flooding and describes biodiversity and ecosystem services in relation to the management of stormwater and the mitigation of floods. Furthermore, it places an emphasis on sustainable storm water management measures. Population growth, urbanisation and climate change will pose significant challenges to engineers, scientists, medical practitioners, policy makers and practitioners of several other disciplines. If we consider environmental and water engineers, they will have to face challenges in designing smart and efficient water systems which are robust and resilient to overcome shrinking green spaces, increased urban heat islands, damages to natural waterways due to flooding caused by increased stormwater flow. This work provides valuable information for practitioners and students at both senior undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species

Download or read book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

Book Hydrology and Hydrogeology

Download or read book Hydrology and Hydrogeology written by William Sobol and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the progress of hydrology and hydrogeology and highlights some of their key concepts and applications. Hydrology refers to the study of the movement, quality and distribution of the water on our planet as well as other celestial bodies. The three main sub-fields of hydrology are ground water hydrology also known as hydrogeology, surface water hydrology and marine hydrology. This text will provide significant information about these rapidly growing fields. It will give in-depth knowledge about the latest advances within this area and its uses in earth sciences. The book is an essential guide for both academicians and those who wish to pursue this discipline further. In this book, using case studies and examples, constant effort has been made to make the understanding of the different concepts of hydrology and hydrogeology as easy and informative as possible, for the readers.

Book The Ecology of Urban Habitats

    Book Details:
  • Author : Oliver Gilbert
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400908210
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book The Ecology of Urban Habitats written by Oliver Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the plants and animals of urban areas, not the urban fringe, not encapsulated countryside but those parts of towns where man's impact is greatest. The powerful anthropogenic influences that operate in cities have, until recently, rendered them unattractive to ecologists who find the high proportion of exotics and mixtures of planted and spontaneous vegetation bewildering. They are also unused to considering fashion, taste, mowing machines and the behaviour of dog owners as habitat factors. I have always maintained, however, and I hope this book demonstrates, that there are as many interrelationships to be uncovered in a flower bed as in a field, in a cemetery as on a sand dune; and due to the well documented history of urban sites, together with the strong effects of management, they are frequently easier to interpret than those operating in more natural areas. The potential of these communities as rewarding areas for study is revealed in the literature on the pests of stored products, urban foxes and birds. The journals oflocal natural history societies have also provided a rich source of material as amateurs have never been averse to following the fortunes of their favourite groups into the heart of our cities. It is predictable that among the few professionals to specialize in this discipline have been those enclosed in West Berlin, who must be regarded as among the leading exponents of urban ecology.
