Book The Culture of Flushing

Download or read book The Culture of Flushing written by Jamie Benidickson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flush of a toilet is routine. It is safe, efficient, necessary, nonpolitical, and utterly unremarkable. Yet Jamie Benidickson's examination of the social and legal history of sewage in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom demonstrates that the uncontroversial reputation of flushing is deceptive. The Culture of Flushing investigates and clarifies the murky evolution of waste treatment. It is particularly relevant in a time when community water quality can no longer be taken for granted.

Book The Environmental Case for Brexit

Download or read book The Environmental Case for Brexit written by Ben Pontin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent Brexit debates present leaving the European Union largely as a threat to environmental protection, and to environmental law. This exciting and important new work argues that Brexit represents a real opportunity for environmental protection in the United Kingdom, freeing it from a pan-European framework not necessarily fit for UK domestic purposes. Central to the argument is the belief that environmental protection, in the United Kingdom, can most effectively be pursued through established domestic institutions, looking inwards at 'local' challenges and outwards at more global ones, all the while drawing on considerable historical experience. The book is designed to address rather than dismiss those concerns raised by environmental lawyers after the outcome of the referendum. Provocative and compelling, it offers an alternative vision of the UK environmental law framework outside of the European Union.

Book Tort Law and the Legislature

    Book Details:
  • Author : TT Arvind
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2012-12-21
  • ISBN : 1782250557
  • Pages : 452 pages

Download or read book Tort Law and the Legislature written by TT Arvind and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the law of tort is generally preoccupied by case law, while the fundamental impact of legislation is often overlooked. At a jurisprudential level there is an unspoken view that legislation is generally piecemeal and at best self-contained and specific; at worst dependent on the whim of political views at a particular time. With a different starting point, this volume seeks to test such notions, illustrating, among other things, the widespread and lasting influence of legislation on the shape and principles of the law of tort; the variety of forms of legislation and the complex nature of political and policy concerns that may lie behind their enactment; the sometimes unexpected consequences of statutory reform; and the integration not only of statutory rules but also of legislative policy into the operation of tort law today. The apparently sharp distinction between judicially created private law principles, and democratically enacted legislative rules and policies, is therefore questioned, and it is argued that to describe the principles of the law of tort without referring to statute is potentially highly misleading. This book shows that legislation is important not only because of the way it varies or replaces case law, but because it also deeply influences the intrinsic character of that law, providing some of its most familiar characteristics. The book provides the first extended interpretation of legislative intervention in the law of tort. Each of the chapters, by leading tort scholars, deals with an aspect of the influence of legislation on the law of tort. While the nature, sources and extent of legislative influence in personal injury law is an essential feature of the collection, other significant areas of tort law are explored, including tort in the context of commercial law, labour law, regulation and the welfare state. Essays on the Compensation Act 2006 and Human Rights Act 1998 bring the current state of the interplay between tort, politics and legislation to the forefront. In all of these contexts, contributors explore the deeper lessons that can be learned about the nature of the law of tort and its changing role and functions over time. Book Causes and Effects

Download or read book Causes and Effects written by Louis Klein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River Pollution 2: Causes and Effects deals mainly with the causes of river pollution and the nature of the various kinds of pollution and their effects upon rivers. This book is an updated version of the first eight chapters of Aspects of River Pollution (first published early in 1957). Owing to the rapid development of the subject and the ever-increasing amount of literature devoted to it, some sections have been virtually rewritten, much new matter has been added, and minor alterations made throughout the text. This book begins with a review of the long history of river pollution, which can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Separate chapters deal with legal aspects of river pollution; the nature and effects of river pollution; the causes of river pollution; and uses of river water. Subsequent chapters cover the biochemical and physicochemical aspects of river pollution; the impact of river pollution on fishes; and biological aspects of river pollution.
