Book Ritual and Its Consequences

Download or read book Ritual and Its Consequences written by Adam B. Seligman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering, interdisciplinary work shows how rituals allow us to live in a perennially imperfect world. Drawing on a variety of cultural settings, the authors utilize psychoanalytic and anthropological perspectives to describe how ritual--like play--creates "as if" worlds, rooted in the imaginative capacity of the human mind to create a subjunctive universe. The ability to cross between imagined worlds is central to the human capacity for empathy. Ritual, they claim, defines the boundaries of these imagined worlds, including those of empathy and other realms of human creativity, such as music, architecture and literature. The authors juxtapose this ritual orientation to a "sincere" search for unity and wholeness. The sincere world sees fragmentation and incoherence as signs of inauthenticity that must be overcome. Our modern world has accepted the sincere viewpoint at the expense of ritual, dismissing ritual as mere convention. In response, the authors show how the conventions of ritual allow us to live together in a broken world. Ritual is work, endless work. But it is among the most important things that we humans do.

Book excerpt: This is a thoughtful essay, well research and written with special edits by Reverend Sifu Sylvain Chamberlain on the core of all Buddha's teachings on the process of all phenomena and noumena. The concept of Dependent Origination also known by other transliterations as Conditioned Genesis, end several others, are repeated discussions in various sutra throughout the Buddha's 58 years of teaching. It is the fundamental concept in Tien-Tai's 3000 realms in a single thought moment, Nichiren's Ichinen Sanzen, the Satipatthana's formation of bodies, and countless discourses. Well explained with many source references, this essay will contribute a greater understanding in yet another voice, for those seeking a well reasoned argument for the practice and insight into liberation from the sufferings of samsara.

Book Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory

Download or read book Readings for a History of Anthropological Theory written by Paul A. Erickson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive anthology offers over 40 readings that are critical to the understanding of anthropological theory and the development of anthropology as an academic discipline. The fourth edition maintains a strong focus on the "four-field" roots of the discipline in North America but has been reorganized with a new section on twenty-first-century theory, including coverage of postcolonial and public anthropology. New key terms and introductions accompany each reading and a revamped glossary makes the book more student-friendly. Used on its own, or together with the overview text A History of Anthropological Theory, Fourth Edition, this anthology offers a flexible and unrivaled introduction to anthropological theory that reflects not only the history but also the changing nature of the discipline today. Book Heroic Wives Rituals Stories and the Virtues of Jain Wifehood

Download or read book Heroic Wives Rituals Stories and the Virtues of Jain Wifehood written by M. Whitney Kelting and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although in Hinduism it is mainly used to refer to widow immolation, the term 'sati' means 'true woman' - a female hero. Whitney Kelting has learned that in Jainism satis appear as subjects of devotional hymns. This seems paradoxical, given that Jain spirituality is to disengage oneself from worldly existence and Jain devotionalism is usually directed toward those souls who have reached perfect detachment. In fact, however, there is a vast corpus of popular texts, many of them written by prominent scholar-monks between the 16th and 18th centuries, illustrating the distinctly worldly virtues of devoted Jain wives. In this fieldwork-based study, Kelting explores the ways in which Jain women use sati narratives and rituals to understand wifehood as a choice, which these women's ongoing ritual practices continually shape. She focuses on eight well-known Jain sati narratives, recorded in both formal ritual contexts and in informal retellings, and also as read aloud from printed versions. She finds that one of the principal functions of Jain sati narratives is to contribute to a discourse of wifehood, which addresses the concerns of Jain laywomen within the Jain value system and provides a fertile context in which Jain women can explore their questions of virtue and piety.
