Download or read book Sons of Crispin written by Sandra M. Marwick and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The association of shoemakers (cordiners in Scotland) with St Crispin, their patron saint, remained so strong that, at least until the early twentieth century, a shoemaker was popularly called a “Crispin” and collectively “sons of Crispin”. Medieval Scottish cordiners maintained altars to St Crispin and his brother St Crispianus and their cult can be traced to France in the sixth century. In the late sixteenth century, an English rewriting of the legend achieved immediate popularity and St Crispin’s Day continued to be remembered in England throughout the seventeenth century. Journeymen shoemakers in Scotland in the early eighteenth century commemorated their patron with processions; and the appellation “St Crispin Society” appeared in 1763. Shaped by collections held by Scottish museums and archives, the longevity of the shoemakers’ attachment to St Crispin is investigated, as are the origin, creation, organisation, development and demise of the Royal St Crispin Society and the network of lodges it created in Scotland in the period 1817–1909. Although showing the influence of freemasonry, the Royal St Crispin Society devised and practised rituals based on shoemaking legends and traditions; and this study affords a rare insight into the “secret” associational life of a group of Scottish working men in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Book excerpt: Through these two books I want to show you as much as possible the completely blueprint where I've worked on for years. It's my library, a collection from which I work, and the many documents that I now use as evidence. This book is a collection of quotations from many books, magazines, newspapers, internet documents and reports from others. Therefore I see this book as a manual / reference book for those interested. It's important to me that finally there is a book where everything that is concealed for us for centuries, is at a glance. What you do with the information and how much it is worth to you to know these things is up to you. Here I simply put those pieces that in my eyes came closest to the truth, and which fitted together like a puzzle. The past has big secrets which still are carefully concealed in the present. By putting the many citations and articles at a glance we see a strong message: Wake up people.

Book Beyond Labor s Veil

Download or read book Beyond Labor s Veil written by Robert E. Weir and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor was founded in 1869 as a secret fraternal order committed to the goal of uniting American labor. At its height in 1886, the Knights claimed the allegiance of perhaps a million workers. Despite a host of local studies by the new labor historians of the 1970s and 1980s, there has been no general study of the Knights since Norman Ware's 1929 book, and no one has ever attempted a comprehensive study of the culture of the organization. In Beyond Labor's Veil, Robert E. Weir presents a fascinating cultural portrait of the Knights across regions, covering the years 1869 to 1893. From the start, the Knights of Labor was an unusual organization, equal parts fraternal order and labor union. It was the only nineteenth-century labor organization to organize African Americans, women, and unskilled workers on an equal basis with white craftsmen. Weir goes beyond the rhetoric of public pronouncements and union politics to consider the real influence of the Knights--in communities and homes as well as in the workplace. Weir explores the many cultural expressions of the Knights--ritual, religion, poetry, music, literature, material objects, graphics, and leisure. Although the Knights barely survived into the twentieth century, Weir concludes that the creative cultural expressions of the Knights enabled it to do as well as it did in the face of powerful oppositional forces. What emerges in Beyond Labor's Veil is a rich, detailed description of the Knights as its members adapted to the confusion and contradiction of America's Gilded Age.
