Book excerpt: Susan thought her life would be as wonderful as a fairy tale when she married the man of her dreams. Shawn Daniels was a successful business owner, a self-made millionaire. The local media recognized his natural charm and exploited his camera-ready features to propel him to celebrity status. When Susan accepted his marriage proposal, it made him the happiest man in the world. The magic of the new chapter of their lives held true for a while, but Shawn had a past that gave cause for alarm. Susan, of course, knew nothing about it, and unfortunately, neither did most others in his life. No one could warn Susan, and she had no way of knowing the dangers that lie ahead for her. Shawn’s reputation was that of a ruthless business executive. His management staff both feared and revered him. No one knew, however, that away from the office, as a man, he was a whimpering coward. His strength at work came from copious amounts of heroin. Away from those close to him, he harbored an insatiable appetite for deviant sexual gratification. The drugs kept those desires in check to a point. It was a cause of frustration Shawn found increasingly difficult to control. Eventually, Susan became an unwilling target of some of his most troubling desires. Shawn’s inability to deal with his personal life led to poor business decisions. Those decisions affected his company’s bottom line, which led to increased pressure from investors. His investors, mostly local mob figures, became increasingly unhappy with Shawn and demanded results. Unfortunately, Shawn’s cowardice put his wife in the direct line of sight for the mob’s pressure tactics. Susan endured ungodly amounts of physical and mental abuse from both Shawn and his unsavory associates. When Shawn got in trouble with the mob, he never took the beatings himself. He volunteered his wife instead. At what point would Susan say enough? How long would it take before her torment became unbearable? Shawn took on a mistress. A very public relationship ensued, which triggered the beginning of the end. He flaunted her around town, as if he was no longer married to Susan. She filled a void that Susan could not and he needed her more than he needed his wife. He thought she just wanted his money, but he was wrong. She had a much more sinister agenda. An agenda that would put an unsuspecting Susan in even further in danger. The way Shawn flaunted his mistress drew constant media scrutiny. Susan’s public humiliation and shame were insufferable. But things were about to change. Susan’s suffering had taken its toll, and she vowed to fight back. She vowed revenge. The plan she came up with was genius in its simplicity, but things went off the rails early. At the trial, the prosecution painted Susan as a cold-blooded killer, a murderer, a savage for the way she had mutilated her husband’s body. But he would have to prove that she did it. The District Attorney was a seasoned, well-respected prosecutor. He saw the case as open and shut. His arrogance was on full display as he openly mocked his opponent, a young inexperienced recent law school grad. Would the prosecutor be up to the task? Or would his young adversary prove to be more of a challenge than he thought? Susan no longer cared what happened to her. In the courtroom, she was like a stone. She showed no emotion, which led jurors to loathe her. Her young attorney had his work cut out for him. Would he have a chance against the seasoned prosecutor? Could he convince an already tainted jury that Susan was innocent? This is Susan Daniels’ story of pain, suffering, humiliation, and an extreme appetite for revenge. As Susan fights for her life in court. Would the truth come out? Did she kill her husband? Her demeanor suggested to the jury that she did. Could her young attorney convince them otherwise? Would Susan get the retribution she deserved?

Book The Spiritual Lives of Bereaved Parents

Download or read book The Spiritual Lives of Bereaved Parents written by Dennis Klass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how parents lose, find, or relocate spiritual anchors after the death of their child. It describes how ordinary people reconstruct their lives after their foundations have shifted, and how they make sense of their world after one of their centers of meaning has been removed. Klass grounds his descriptions of spirituality in his scholarly study of comparative religions, and in his two decades studying the lives of bereaved parents. He argues that continuing bonds with their dead children can give parents a new transcendent reality. Deceased children, like saints or bodhisattvas, can offer a bridge between the profane and sacred worlds, support parents as they find meaning in a world made forever poorer, and bind together a community adequate to parents' grief. The book reports Klass's clinical practice and his work as advisor to a bereaved parents self-help support group.

Book Fellow Travellers of the Right

Download or read book Fellow Travellers of the Right written by Richard Griffiths and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When reviewing the first edition in the Times Literary Supplement, Stephen Koss wrote that Fellow Travellers of the Right 'should be required reading for those who believe that ignorance under any circumstances can deter evil'. One can see why. So topsy-turvy had attitudes become in certain circles that the accusation of being 'unquestionably the biggest war-monger in the world today' was levelled at Churchill, not Hitler! In the author's words 'this book is an attempt to study the various forms of motivation which led to this phenomenon (pro-Nazi sympathies in Britain). It is also an attempt to assess the years in which approval for Nazi Germany became greater or less, and the possible reasons for these changes.' The author goes on to say, 'The pattern of British pro-Nazism is at first sight surprising. After a slow start in the 1933-35 period, it reached a high peak in the years 1936 and 1937, after which it gradually declined until, at the outbreak of the war, it was confined to extremist groups and isolated outcrops of specially motivated approval.' From misguided writers like Edmund Blunden and Henry Williamson to altogether more sinister figures like Lord Londonderry and Sir Arnold Wilson, the roll-call of 'fellow travellers of the Right' is disturbing. Richard Griffiths' acclaimed and much-sought-after book remains the best on the subject.

Book The Unexpected Professor

Download or read book The Unexpected Professor written by John Carey and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his provocative take on cultural issues in The Intellectuals and the Masses and What Good Are the Arts?, John Carey describes in this warm and funny memoir the events that formed him - an escape from the London blitz to an idyllic rural village, army service in Egypt, an open scholarship to Oxford and an academic career that saw him elected, age 40, to Oxford's oldest English Literature professorship. He frankly portrays the snobberies and rituals of 1950s Oxford, but also his inspiring meetings with writers and poets - Auden, Graves, Larkin, Heaney - and his forty-year stint as a lead book-reviewer for the Sunday Times. This is a book about the joys of reading - in effect, an informal introduction to the great works of English literature. But it is also about war and family, and how an unexpected background can give you the insight and the courage to say the unexpected thing.

Book excerpt: It’s 1994. Cell phones have yet to give seamen a bittersweet connection to the world they leave ashore, and Captain John Raymond has been riding the tides of loneliness for years. Lost in the choppy two-weeks on, two-weeks off rhythm of tugboat life, he feels most alone laying at anchor in New York Harbor because home is so close but seems a world away. The harbor is where John performs The Wheelhouse Café, singing over a marine radio in the wheelhouse. He doesn’t know if anyone hears him . . . until he meets Arden McHale. Arden is adrift when John finds her sobbing at the wake for Billy Mickelson, a tugboat captain lost at sea. She is terrified that her rejection of Billy’s long-harbored love is the reason behind her childhood friend’s tragic disappearance. Arden is also distraught that her go-to remedy of work marathons and round-the-clock cocktails fails to calm her waves of guilt and grief. Though John and Arden are from two different worlds, they share an intoxicating connection that threatens to derail Arden’s budding romance with another man and makes John realize just how empty his life has become. Soon after Billy’s wake, Arden asks John to help protect her eight year-old nephew from his abusive father. John agrees to let the boy stow away on the tug until he’s out of danger. During the ensuing adventure, the connection between John and Arden deepens as they talk over the marine radio set up in her apartment, and Arden swoons as she listens John sing in The Wheelhouse Café. But as John opens up to being heard and understood, Arden is faced with more questions than answers. Will she ever forgive herself for abandoning Billy? Can she let go of feeling responsible for his death? Is she capable of falling in love, especially with someone who’s given his heart to the sea for so long?

Book Up the Republic

Download or read book Up the Republic written by Fintan O'Toole and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book, historians, lawyers, economists and writers come together to put a coherent case: that although the Irish economic collapse has resulted in national humiliation, renewed emigration and a decline in living standards for the majority of the population, there is still hope that the country can be reformed and renewed. Irish politicians offered the now notorious blanket guarantee to all the banks which had got in over their heads during the great property bubble - including one that had become little more than a criminal enterprise. A different set of politicians grimly enforces the consequences of that guarantee, locking an entire generation of Irish men and women into paying for the mistakes of greedy bankers and their corrupt friends in government. The energy of hope has to come from elsewhere. These essays demonstrate how simple measures and different economic and social policies could release that energy and fulfil the promise of an educated, literate and culturally vibrant people.
