Book Japanese Numbers Game

Download or read book Japanese Numbers Game written by T Crump and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An almost obsessional use of numbers characterizes Japanese popular culture. A wide variety of numerical formulae and strategies provide the means for explaining events and solving problems occurring in everyday life. These include such matters as the choice of the name for a child, ranking in almost any game or sport, the diagnosis and cure of illness or the decision to accept a new job. This text provides a general study of the field of Japanese popular numeracy. It introduces the reader to a world of numbers in which fortune-telling, the abacus and games involving numbers, as well as curious numerical names (of both people and places), illustrate the importance of systems of counting, calculation and forecasting. The study explores the cultural roots of attitudes towards numbers and makes suggestions about the contemporary implications of a culture in which mechanical numeracy (and number obsession) is general but the highest levels of academic mathematics still fall short of world standards.

Book One Hundred Middle English Lyrics

Download or read book One Hundred Middle English Lyrics written by Robert David Stevick and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stevick's classic work remains the only text of its kind aimed at fostering the linguistic competence necessary to understand its poems in Middle English. The wide range of lyric poems in the book are normalized to a Chaucerian dialect. The introduction has been revised to take into account the scholarship and criticism published since the first edition appeared in 1964. It gives the background for the poetry, explains how and why the texts are normalized, and reviews significant critical scholarly studies of the works. Included is a section on morphology and grammar that introduces students to the language of the lyrics, and a section on the evolving meter of Middle English. "A fine piece of work. . . . Learned, wide-ranging, and judicious." -- John B. Friedman, author of The Monstrous Races in Medieval Art and Thought "An impressive collection. Stevick's decision to normalize the texts makes it highly accessible." -- Ralph Hanna III, University of California, Riverside

But the stubborn cowboy digs in his boot heels and refuses to leave. Book Social Science and Policy Challenges

Download or read book Social Science and Policy Challenges written by Georgios Papanagnou and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Producing scientific knowledge that can inform solutions and guide policy-making is one of the most important functions of social science. Nonetheless, if social science is to become more relevant and influential so as to impact on the drawing and execution of policy, certain measures need to be taken to narrow its distance from the policy sphere. This decision is less obvious than it seems. Both research and experience have proved that policy-making is a complex, often sub-rational, interactive process that involves a wide range of actors such as decision makers, bureaucrats, researchers, organized interests, citizen and civil society representatives and research brokers. In addition, social science often needs to defend both its relevance to policy and its own scientific status. Moving away from instrumental visions of the link between social research and policy, this collective volume aims to highlight the more constructed nature of the use of social knowledge.

Book Buddhas and Kami in Japan

Download or read book Buddhas and Kami in Japan written by Fabio Rambelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the combinatory tradition that dominated premodern and early modern Japanese religion, known as honji suijaku (originals and their traces). It questions received, simplified accounts of the interactions between Shinto and Japanese Buddhism, and presents a more dynamic and variegated religious world, one in which the deities' Buddhist originals and local traces did not constitute one-to-one associations, but complex combinations of multiple deities based on semiotic operations, doctrines, myths, and legends. The book's essays, all based on specific case studies, discuss the honji suijaku paradigm from a number of different perspectives, always integrating historical and doctrinal analysis with interpretive insights.

Book Language Life in Japan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick Heinrich
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2010-09-13
  • ISBN : 1136935932
  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book Language Life in Japan written by Patrick Heinrich and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its monolingual self-image, Japan is multilingual and growing more so due to indigenous minority language revitalization and as an effect of migration. Besides Japan's autochthonous languages such as the Ainu and Ryukyuan languages, there are more than 75,000 immigrant children in the Japanese public education system alone who came to Japan in the 1980s and who speak more than a hundred different languages. Added to this growing linguistic diversity, the importance of English as the language of international communication in business and science especially is hotly debated. This book analyses how this linguistic diversity, and indeed recognition of this phenomenon, presents a wide range of sociolinguistic challenges and opportunities in fundamental institutions such as schools, in cultural patterns and in social behaviours and attitudes. This topic is an important one as Japan fights to re-establish itself in the new world order and will be of interest to all those who are concerned language change, language versus dialect, the effect of modern technology on language usage, and the way national and social problems are always reflected through the prism of language.
