In general, sexual violence includes attempted or completed nonconsensual touching or penetration (oral, vaginal, or anal) that occurs through verbal coercion, incapacitation, or physical force. Addressing sexual violence requires a focus on the entire translational spectrum from discovery science on the development of risk and protective factors to large scale dissemination of effective preventative interventions and policy changes. In the current dissertation, I present research from two different stages of the translational spectrum to inform sexual violence prevention. In the first paper, I focus on the Type 0 stage of translational research, that is, discovery science about the etiology of sexual violence. I use structural equation modeling to explore longitudinal associations between beliefs about alcohols role in sexual experiences, drinking in large group contexts such as bars and parties, and sexual violence during college among female college students. Findings indicated that women who had been the victims of sexual violence before college were more likely to be victims of sexual violence during college. Women with more positive sex-related alcohol expectancies tended to drink alcohol in large group contexts more frequently than women with less positive expectancies. However, contrary to previous cross-sectional research, women with more positive sex-related alcohol expectancies at the beginning of college were no more likely to be victims of sexual violence during college than women with less positive sex-related alcohol expectancies. In the second paper, I focus on Type 1 translation, or intervention development. A current challenge facing the field of prevention science is scaling up, or disseminating preventative interventions on a large scale. In this paper, I discuss the application of the desirability, feasibility, viability framework to the development of preventative interventions with the potential for large scale impact. Then, in a case study, I present a method for evaluating the desirability, feasibly, and viability of preventative interventions. Implications from the current dissertation indicate a need for longitudinal research on sexual victimization risk factors, because risk factors that precede the social problem may be targeted with preventative interventions. I propose that preventionists may use the desirability, feasibility, viability framework to increase the potential of their interventions for large scale impact. In addition, I suggest that future sexual violence prevention efforts should focus on preventing revictimization, vary intervention settings, and disseminate effective preventative interventions prior to the college transition. Preventionists should consider the multiple stages of translational research in their work to rapidly turn scientific findings into public health impact.

Book excerpt: Underage college women are at high risk for alcohol use and sexual assault and targeting both alcohol use and sexual assault is needed for this population. The current 3 studies examined the etiology and reduction of sexual assault and re-assault on college campuses among women. Study 1 was a prospective assessment of the use of sexual assault protective behavioral strategies (PBS) on subsequent sexual assault incidence and severity. The use of sexual assault PBS at Time 1 was associated with less sexual assault incidence and severity at Time 2. Study 2 furthered this by examining the relationship between sexual assault PBS, drinking PBS, sexual assault, and re-assault. Both sexual assault PBS and drinking PBS were associated with sexual assault and re-assault in college. Study 3 was a randomized controlled trial assessing the efficacy of a combined intervention targeting both sexual assault risk and alcohol use in college women to reduce sexual assault and re-assault. The combined intervention decreased incapacitated rape, sexual assault incidence and severity, and frequency of heavy-episodic drinking for women with higher incidence and severity of sexual assault at baseline. Taken together, targeting both alcohol use and sexual assault risk in college women may be an effective way to decrease sexual assault and re-assault on college campuses.

The Women's Program is a sexual assault prevention program offered to undergraduate women on college campuses throughout the United States, and has been evaluated in one published study. Participants for this study consisted of 103 undergraduate women currently attending a large, public university located in the Midwest United States. Women in the treatment group viewed a presentation of The Women's Program, while the control group received no intervention. Consistent with the researcher's hypotheses women who viewed a presentation of The Women's Program reported a greater ability to recognize risk cues, a greater willingness to engage in self-protective behaviors, and a greater level of perceived self-efficacy in handling threatening dating situations when compared to the control group. Implications of these results for risk reduction programming on college campuses is discussed.

One in five women is sexually assaulted in college. Most often, it's by someone she knows -and also most often, she does not report what happened. Many survivors are left feeling isolated, ashamed or to blame. Although it happens less often, men, too, are victims of these crimes. Sexual assault survivors respond in different ways. Some are ready to make a formal complaint right away, and want their school to move swiftly to hold the perpetrator accountable. Others, however, aren't so sure. Sexual assault can leave victims feeling powerless - and they need support from the beginning to regain a sense of control. Some, at least at first, don't want their assailant (or the assailant's friends, classmates, teammates or club members) to know they've reported what happened. But they do want someone on campus to talk to - and many want to talk in confidence, so they can sort through their options at their own pace. If victims don't have a confidential place to go, or think a school will launch a full-scale investigation against their wishes, many will stay silent. In recent years, some schools have directed nearly all their employees (including those who typically offer confidential services, like rape crisis and women's centers) to report all the details of an incident to school officials - which can mean that a survivor quickly loses control over what happens next. That practice, however well-intentioned, leaves survivors with fewer places to turn. Schools should identify trained, confidential victim advocates who can provide emergency and ongoing support. This is a key "best practice." The person a victim talks to first is often the most important. This person should understand the dynamics of sexual assault and the unique toll it can take on self-blaming or traumatized victims. The advocate should also be able to help get a victim needed resources and accommodations, explain how the school's grievance and disciplinary system works, and help navigate the process. As many advocates have learned over the years, after survivors receive initial, confidential support, they often decide to proceed with a formal complaint or cooperate in an investigation.
