Download or read book Natural Hazards written by Burrell E. Montz and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from the spatial patterns of disasters? What human and structural factors need to be addressed to explain hazard vulnerability? As populations grow and the climate warms, how can natural hazards be mitigated? Thoroughly revised and updated, and now with a more global perspective, the second edition of this accessible text provides an integrated framework for understanding and managing natural hazards. Numerous case studies from around the world illustrate the complexities of extreme geophysical events and highlight their physical, social, political, and economic dimensions. The text identifies essential principles for tackling the fundamental causes of differential vulnerabilities that perpetuate human distress, and for promoting recovery and resilience. New to This Edition *New frameworks for understanding human resilience and adaptive capacity in recovery, dynamics of risk and uncertainty, and more. *Chapter on spatial and temporal aspects of hazards. *Discussions of cutting-edge topics, such as chronic disasters, controversies in international aid, and how hazards affect regions differentially. *Many new case studies, including Hurricanes Katrina and Charley, Superstorm Sandy, the 2011 Japan tsunami, Ecuador's chronic volcanic hazard, and others. *Reflects 20 years of research advances across the physical and social sciences, development trends, new technologies, and ongoing global climate change.

Download or read book Auckland s Exposure to Coastal Inundation by Storm tides and Waves written by Ross Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bounded on the east by the South Pacific Ocean and on the west by the Tasman Sea, Auckland has 3,200 km of dynamic coastline that includes three major harbours. As well as a long and diverse coastline, Auckland has the largest population density to coastline ratio in New Zealand which means that the city has a high exposure to coastal hazards including coastal inundation. Coastal inundation is the flooding of normally dry, low-lying coastal land due to extreme high water levels. Extreme sea levels can result from several processes including astronomical tides, monthly mean sea level anomalies, and storm-surge. In areas of open coast, waves during certain conditions can also raise the effective sea level. "--Background, P.1.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2013, Auckland Council’s Civil Defence Emergency Management department, commissioned NIWA to calculate and model coastal-storm inundation elevations for the entire Auckland region, primarily for emergency management purposes. This work identifies areas potentially affected by coastal hazards, as required by the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement and is outlined in Part 1 of this report. The predicted flood areas were mapped using the static level (otherwise known as the ‘bathtub’) inundation mapping technique; whereby all land lying below the calculated extreme water level (with a direct flow path to the coast) is assumed to be flooded in its entirety. This is an approved methodology for identifying indicative inundation areas. However, the technique does not fully capture the dynamic and time variant processes that occur during a coastal-storm event along some of our coast, such as along wide, low lying coastal plains."--Auckland Council overview.
