Book Risk Neutrality and the Two Tier Foreign Exchange Market

Download or read book Risk Neutrality and the Two Tier Foreign Exchange Market written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1989-10-11 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we develop and test a model of a utility maximizing representative agent operating in the Belgium-Luxembourg two-tier foreign exchange market. Our tests examine and fail to reject a risk neutral representative agent utility function. When we combine a risk neutral utility function with goods arbitrage we end up with the implication that the proportionate spread between the current account and financial exchange rates is not influenced by domestic policy. This implication is not rejected in some additional tests relating the Belgium-Luxembourg two-tier market: spread to some Belgian policy variables and some foreign variables.

Book Determinants of the Spread in a Two Tier Foreign Exchange Market

Download or read book Determinants of the Spread in a Two Tier Foreign Exchange Market written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1988-07-21 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on two-tier foreign exchange markets has concentrated on relating various shocks to the spread between the exchange rates relevant to the two tiers of the exchange market. In some earlier work we found that none of the typical predictions of theory held up empirically as BLEU spread explanations. In particular we could not find any domestic policy variables that significantly explained the BLEU spread. Our finding led us to reformulate two-tier market theory. We find that if domestic agents are risk neutral then no domestic policy variables are predicted to influence the spread.

Book The Microstructure of Foreign Exchange Markets

Download or read book The Microstructure of Foreign Exchange Markets written by Jeffrey A. Frankel and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign exchange market is the largest, fastest-growing financial market in the world. Yet conventional macroeconomic approaches do not explain why people trade foreign exchange. At the same time, they fail to explain the short-run determinants of the exchange rate. These nine innovative essays use a microstructure approach to analyze the workings of the foreign exchange market, with special emphasis on institutional aspects and the actual behavior of market participants. They examine the volume of transactions, heterogeneity of traders, the time of day and location of trading, the bid-ask spread, and the high level of exchange rate volatility that has puzzled many observers. They also consider the structure of the market, including such issues as nontransparency, asymmetric information, liquidity trading, the use of automated brokers, the relationship between spot and derivative markets, and the importance of systemic risk in the market. This timely volume will be essential reading for anyone interested in the economics of international finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...the most definitive study of the subject, assembling an all-star cast to address the many outstanding questions and succeeding beyond expectations in combining elegant theory and state of the art econometrics to reach very sensible policy conclusions.' - Mohsin S. Khan, Deputy Director, Research Department, International Monetary Fund ' This book fills an important vacuum in the literature of the economic consequences of parallel markets and should prove of great value to students of economic development and to policy-makers in developing countries as they struggle to reform their exchange rate and trade incentive systems. Here they will find all that they need to know.' - Vittorio Corbo, Professor of Economics, Universidad Catolica de Chile 'A most comprehensive treatment of the relationships between parallel foreign exchange markets and macroeconomic policies, both across countries and over time. The book substantially enhances our understanding of how these systems work in practice and will be of great interest to policy-makers, researchers and graduate students of economic policy.' - Samuel M. Wangwe, Professor of Economics, University of Dar es Salaam and Executive Director, Economic and Social Research Foundation, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania This book examines extensive empirical evidence on the macroeconomic implications of parallel exchange rates in developing countries. Eight case-studies from Africa, Latin America, and Turkey provide detailed evidence on the emergence of parallel exchange rates, their impact on macroeconomic performance, and the criteria for successful exchange-rate unification. A chapter on European dual exchange rates summarizes the contrasting experience of industrial countries. An overview chapter lays out the analytical framework, assesses the evidence, and draws policy conclusions.
