Book Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management

Download or read book Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management written by Liam Donaldson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

Book Risk Outcomes and Costs in Neurosurgery

Download or read book Risk Outcomes and Costs in Neurosurgery written by Andreea Seicean and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: Health services research driven from within neurosurgery can be used to improve access to and quality of care, while helping to control costs. Aim: To answer clinically relevant questions that make a difference in patient care. Methods: We chose to use the American College of Surgeons National Safety and Quality Improvement Project as the database for all components of this dissertation, which contains prospective, blinded, multi-institutional information about patients undergoing surgery. Results: Hemostasis history was as predictive as laboratory testing for all outcomes, with higher sensitivity. Advanced age does not increase the risk of poor outcomes after surgical resection of primary or metastatic intracranial tumors, after controlling for other risk factors. We not find smoking to be associated with early (30-day) peri-operative morbidity or mortality. All levels of anemia were significantly associated with prolonged length of hospitalization and poorer operative or 30-day outcomes in patients undergoing elective spine surgery. Conclusions: Routine hemostatic laboratory screening appears to have limited utility. Testing limited to neurosurgical patients with a positive history would save an estimated $81,942,000 annually. Age should not be used, in isolation, as an a priori factor to discourage pursuing craniotomy. Smoking cessation can be considered prior to spine surgery for reasons other then early (30-day) peri-operative morbidity or mortality. Anemia should be regarded as an independent risk factor for peri-operative and post-operative complications that deserves attention prior to elective spine surgery.

Book Intensive Care in Neurology and Neurosurgery

Download or read book Intensive Care in Neurology and Neurosurgery written by Daniel Agustin Godoy and published by SEEd. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 1791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuromonitoring is the tool of trade in intensive care, and should incorporate cutting edge technology with patience, repeated clinical observation, careful identification of neuroworsening. The aim of the book is to be of practical use, and to assist the clinical practice of the busy physician. The clinical examination belongs to the introductory section of the book, and an abundance of technology, with specific emphasis on the importance of intracranial pressure, comes in the following parts. Since the patient with an injured brain can have chances only if other organs and systems (as the lungs, and the acid-base equilibrium etc.) are preserved, a section of the book covers the interactions between the affected brain and other organs. The way the brain reacts to different insults has common aspects, as inflammatory responses, edema etc., but also specific features. Sections five to nine summarize the most relevant pathologies, from ischemic to hemorrhagic lesions, trauma, tumors etc. and also mentions new‑comers, as the specific problems related to the expanding field of neuroradiological interventions. Finally, neurointensive care does not exist without knowledgeable nurses. The intracranial pressure measurement starts (or unfortunately ends) with a catheter well maintained, and that becomes vital when the drainage of hydrocephalus is concerned. Dealing with patients with severe brain damage has plenty of ethical implications, up to the problems related to brain death and organ donation. This book is published in two volumes.
