Book Recent Advances in Renewable Energy Automation and Energy Forecasting

Download or read book Recent Advances in Renewable Energy Automation and Energy Forecasting written by Sarat Kumar Sahoo and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advancement of sustainable energy is becoming an important concern for many countries. The traditional electrical grid supports only one-way interaction of power being delivered to the consumers. The emergence of improved sensors, actuators, and automation technologies has consequently improved the control, monitoring and communication techniques within the energy sector, including the Smart Grid system. With the support of the aforementioned modern technologies, the information flows in two-ways between the consumer and supplier. This data communication helps the supplier in overcoming challenges like integration of renewable technologies, management of energy demand, load automation and control. Renewable energy (RE) is intermittent in nature and therefore difficult to predict. The accurate RE forecasting is very essential to improve the power system operations. The forecasting models are based on complex function combinations that include seasonality, fluctuation, and dynamic nonlinearity. The advanced intelligent computing algorithms for forecasting should consider the proper parameter determinations for achieving optimization. For this we need, new generation research areas like Machine learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enable the efficient integration of distributed and renewable generation at large scale and at all voltage levels. The modern research in the above areas will improve the efficiency, reliability and sustainability in the Smart grid.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "An Investigation of Subsynchronous Oscillation of AC/DC Power Systems: Modeling and Analysis" Submitted by Yu Chang for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2006 Subsynchronous Oscillation (SSO), which can result from torsional interactions with series compensation capacitors and/or various fast acting power system controllers, is a complex stability issue in power systems. The development of HVDC transmission and thyristor switching devices in power systems has stimulated considerable research into device-dependent SSO. This thesis seeks to present comprehensive mathematical models and small signal stability analysis of SSO in ac/dc power systems. Both eigenvalue analysis and complex torque coefficient (CTC) calculation methods are discussed. Traditional eigenvalue analysis is implemented based on system linearized ordinary differential equation (LODE) models with algebraic variables eliminated. However, the system physical transparency laid in the original differential and algebraic equations (DAE) can be destroyed after reduction. In addition, it may be inconvenient to conduct eigenvalue sensitivity analysis w.r.t. certain parameters based on LODE models. This thesis proposes linearized differential and algebraic equation (LDAE) models for SSO study. The DAE formulation process facilitates equation assembly efficiently by breaking down the modeling issue into tow steps, viz. element modeling and system integration. Both generalized eigenvalue analysis and CTC calculation methods are derived directly based on the proposed LDAE model. The LDAE-based SSO study model and its corresponding analysis methods have the potential to jointly work with appropriate thyristor switching device models for SSO study and provide deep insight about their effects on SSO. For SSO study in a power system with thyristor-switching devices, the time variations and nonlinearities caused by the switching transients pose a challenge to the eigenvalue analysis and CTC calculation methods. The quasi-steady-state models of converter-based thyristor-switching devices such as HVDC converters are widely used to investigate their impacts on SSO. The quasi-steady-state model with the switching transients ignored, theoretically, is accurate only for the fundamental component at the steady state. So far this approach has not yet been verified. This thesis reports a comprehensive study of the dynamic modeling of a generator/rectifier system, using the modeling technique in power electronics. A nonlinear detailed model of the electromechanical ac/dc system was constructed, based on the description of the commutation and non-commutation stages with the switching transients modeled in detail. In order to use the CTC calculation method to analyze SSO with impacts of rectifier controls, a precisely linearized model is derived by calculating the transition from the begin to the end of the period with piecewise accurate linearized system models. The computer case studies reported in this thesis show that the conventional quasi-steady-state model will result in more conservative simulation results than those from the proposed precisely linearized model. Hence SSO damping controllers designed from the quasi-steady-state model have to posses more control energy to retain system stability under SSO. Finally a stand

Book Sub synchronous Resonance Analysis and Detection

Download or read book Sub synchronous Resonance Analysis and Detection written by Igor Brandão Machado Matsuo and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing penetration of renewable generation resources, power grids have become more susceptible to sub-synchronous resonance phenomena, especially to sub-synchronous control interaction, which produces fast-growing oscillations. The power system operation requirements for a reliable, fast and accurate detection and monitoring system for protection and mitigation purposes are increasing. Besides, risk assessment analysis during grid planning and update studies can be extremely time consuming due to a large number of possible grid configurations and small time-steps required for the simulation of detailed electromagnetic transient (EMT) models. The first part of this dissertation aims to provide an optimized tool for SSR risk assessment analysis based on frequency scanning that uses a multi-frequency signal to estimate the grid impedance at all frequencies with one simulation instead of one simulation per frequency of interest. The technique reduces the effects of nonlinearities normally present in power electronic-based devices, is based on the harmonic injection method and can be used with black-box models. A case study based on the Texas synthetic grid and with two wind farms and a VSC-based STATCOM was used for the validation of the proposed method, which showed superior accuracy than other studied techniques while being 11.71 times faster than multiple single-frequency injections. The second part of this dissertation provides an SSR detection system based on the power spectrum of the input signal plus frequency, magnitude, and derivative-of-magnitude estimators. All the signal conditioning techniques were also discussed and optimized to enable the detection system to efficiently and accurately work throughout the whole sub-synchronous range (5-55 Hz for a 60 Hz system). Finally, a complete monitoring system from data acquisition to data logging was implemented for the detection system in an FPGA-CPU heterogeneous platform and tested in real-time devices. The system provides several mechanisms to ensure its own reliable operation with several self-monitoring schemes and a health indicator in a dual modular redundancy scheme (primary and backup controller-units). A soft ware-implemented voting scheme then decides which unit will forward all information to the subsystems that will use the output of the detection system. The Texas synthetic grid case was applied to the monitoring/detection system and the detection of sub-synchronous control interaction was observed with pickup times within 10 ms to 40 ms depending on the system disturbance.
