Download or read book Life at High Pressure written by Alister Macdonald and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses the ways in which high hydrostatic pressure (i.e. water pressure) affects all grades of life which thrive at pressures much greater those in our normal environment. The deep sea is the best known high pressure environment, where pressures reach a thousand times greater than those at the surface, yet it is populated by a variety of animals and microorganisms. The earth’s crust supports microorganisms which live in water filled pores at high pressure. In addition, the load bearing joints of animals like ourselves experience pulses of hydrostatic pressure of a magnitude similar to the pressure at mid ocean depths. These pressures affect molecular structures and biochemical reactions. Basic cellular processes are drastically affected – the growth and division of cells, the way nerves conduct impulses and the chemical reactions which provide energy. Adaptation to high pressure also occurs in complex physiological systems such as those which provide buoyancy. Probably the greatest challenge to our understanding of adaptation to high pressure is the stabilisation of the nervous system of deep sea animals to avoid convulsions which pressure causes in shallow water animals. Additionally the book provides insight into the engineering required to study life at high pressure: equipment which can trap small deep sea animals and retrieve them at their high pressure, equivalent equipment for microorganisms, laboratory microscopes which can focus on living cells under high pressure, incubators for bacteria which require high pressure to grow, high pressure aquaria for marine animals and lastly and briefly, manned and unmanned submersible vessels, Landers and deep drill hole sampling. Rather like the organisms studied many laboratory instruments have been adapted to function at high pressure.

Book Predicting the Bite

Download or read book Predicting the Bite written by Ronald W. Reinhold and published by . This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is loaded with extraordinary new fishing secrets, including the secret of how barometric pressure affects fish behavior. Fishermen have sought it for centuries, and it will change fishing forever. It's published here for the first time, and can make you a very smart fisherman, and likely a much more successful one. You'll learn how to accurately predict when fish will be biting and naturally feeding, and put yourself on the water when odds are highest to catch the most fish. Discover how to predict exact days and times when fishing will be best. If you can only fish on Saturday or Sunday, you'll learn how to predict which day will be better. You'll know when to go or when to stay home, because you'll know how to predict when "the bite is on," especially the best bites. Expect to learn more new knowledge about fishing than from any other single source. It gives a major competitive advantage to tournament fishermen, fishing guides, and charter captains during every trip on the water, including on rivers, lakes of all sizes, and saltwater shores. Every chapter contains powerful information that helps you make accurate fishing predictions for a lifetime. Additionally, everything in the book works worldwide. You'll learn how flowers can tell you when to go fishing, as will the 70 mile rule, and the 14 day limit, and how wind direction can guide you to the best fishing of the day. Age-old proverbs like "Wind from the east, fishing is least," and "Fishing is best just before a storm" are also demystified with practical explanations. Nothing in fishing literature is as jam-packed with new information, concepts, and principles that will contribute as much to your growth as a successful fisherman. You'll be among the first to learn about "ableness" and the pressure rules -- which make it possible for you to predict the exact days when fly hatches will occur, and when they will not. They will greatly improve your fishing success, and dramatically reduce your travel costs and time lost on unproductive fishing trips. Whether you're a flyfisherman, spin fisherman, or baitcaster, you'll be captivated by the vigorous bites caused by pie hatches and pie molts, and learn how to predict the exact days they will occur, and where. If you fish the saltwater intertidal zone, you'll discover the effects of barometric pressure and wind on fishing near shore. There is so much more. Understanding the effects of barometric pressure on fish behavior will be one of the most enlightening experiences in your fishing lifetime. The explanation, and extraordinary fishing benefits it provides, have been meticulously reviewed and approved by a platoon of science scholars before revealing them in these pages. A science thread runs througout the explanations, as well as the entire book, but the whole work is written in fisherman's language as a fishing book for fishing success for all fisherman at all education levels.

Book Research Techniques for High Pressure and High Temperature

Download or read book Research Techniques for High Pressure and High Temperature written by G. C. Ulmer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last two decades, the experimental technology for the study of high temperature solid-vapor and liquid-vapor equilibria has mushroomed so fast that· both academic and industrial research ers desirous of working in this field -- be they physical chemists, metallurgists, ceramists, petrologists, crystal chemists, or mem bers of any of the several branches of materials science -- find themselves in the situation that in order to learn the art of the latest techniques, a period of apprenticeship or residency needs be spent at an institution or laboratory currently engaged in this type of solid-vapor or liquid-vapor research. The tech niques for control of the vapor phase at total pressures of one atmosphere or greater have not been well defined in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this volume will be to serve as a labora tory manual for the control, calibration, and measurement of high temperature-high pressure equilibria. The avowed aims of this treatment of experimental techniques are: (1) to give, in terms understandable at the graduate student level, the laboratory procedures necessary to the design and utilization of good experimental technique, (2) to list the limitations, dangers, and technical pitfalls inherent or intrinsic to the described techniques, (3) to give theory and specific data only where they are essential to the experimental design, (4) to give with each chapter references that are extensive enough to serve as a bibliography of the state-of-the-art of technique development within the last decade.

Book Compounds and Alloys Under High Pressure

Download or read book Compounds and Alloys Under High Pressure written by E. Yu Tonkov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-10-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to classify and systematize the available data on the behavior of binary alloys under high pressure. Despite the fact that there is a strong correlation between temperature-composition (T-C) phase diagrams at normal pressure and three- dimensional temperature-composition-pressure (T-C-P) diagrams, many material scientists seldom refer to the (T-C-P) diagrams, just as many high pressure researchers often ignore the data obtained at normal pressure. This book aims to bridge the gap between data obtained at high pressure and that obtained at normal pressure. The most recent research covers not only elements and stoichiometric compounds, but also binary, ternary, and multicomponent alloys, and so this book covers an extended range of substances. The properties of 890 binary systems and a further 1153 pseudobinary and ternary systems are summarized, and accompanied by an extensive bibliography. The data includes information on the solubility of components in solid solutions, melting, and first- and second-order phase transformations in alloys and stoichiometric compounds.
