Book excerpt: Picking up where Quiet ended, How to Be Yourself is the best book you’ll ever read about how to conquer social anxiety. “This book is also a groundbreaking road map to finally being your true, authentic self.” —Susan Cain, New York Times, USA Today and nationally bestselling author of Quiet Up to 40% of people consider themselves shy. You might say you’re introverted or awkward, or that you're fine around friends but just can't speak up in a meeting or at a party. Maybe you're usually confident but have recently moved or started a new job, only to feel isolated and unsure. If you get nervous in social situations—meeting your partner's friends, public speaking, standing awkwardly in the elevator with your boss—you've probably been told, “Just be yourself!” But that's easier said than done—especially if you're prone to social anxiety. Weaving together cutting-edge science, concrete tips, and the compelling stories of real people who have risen above their social anxiety, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen proposes a groundbreaking idea: you already have everything you need to succeed in any unfamiliar social situation. As someone who lives with social anxiety, Dr. Hendriksen has devoted her career to helping her clients overcome the same obstacles she has. With familiarity, humor, and authority, Dr. Hendriksen takes the reader through the roots of social anxiety and why it endures, how we can rewire our brains through our behavior, and—at long last—exactly how to quiet your Inner Critic, the pesky voice that whispers, "Everyone will judge you." Using her techniques to develop confidence, think through the buzz of anxiety, and feel comfortable in any situation, you can finally be your true, authentic self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to thrive in—or escape from—a toxic work environment. Toxic organizations are rife with conflict, fear, and anger. The environment causes people to have physiological responses as if they’re in a fight-or-flight situation. Healthy people become ill. Colds, flu and stress-related illnesses such as heart attacks are more common. By contrast, in resonant organizations, people take fewer sick days and turnover is low. People smile, make jokes, talk openly and help one another." - Annie McKee (author, consultant) Many employees experience the reality of bullying bosses, poisonous people, and soul-crushing cultures on a daily basis. Rising Above a Toxic Workplace tells authentic stories from today's workers who share how they cope, change, or quit. Candidly they open up about what they learned, what they wish they had done, and how to gain resilience. Insightfully illustrating from these accounts, authors Gary Chapman, Paul White, and Harold Myra blend their combined experiences in ministry and business to deliver hope and practical guidance to those who find themselves in an unhealthy work environment. Includes a Survival Guide and Toolkit full of strategies and realistic insights
Download or read book Rise Above School written by Jeffrey J. Till and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing how you will educate your children is probably the biggest decision you will ever make for their happiness, their knowledge and their approach to life. "Rise Above School" is a tool to help you make this critical decision. It takes a candid and thorough look at what school is and does and explains the opportunities available through home education (i.e., homeschooling.) Jeffrey Till explains his views on schooling and education through the lens of years of study on the topic and from his own experiences home educating his own three children. The table of contents: CONTENTS Introduction1 Why you should rescue your children from school3 Making the decision is really, really hard6 The Complete Case for Home Education11 What do you want to be when you grow up?48 Having empathy for your children is critical62 My personal path to home education66 Talking about home education72 How to get started76 Conclusion82 Appendix: Media resources and acknowledgements 84 The Introduction: Introduction This book isn't about the act of home education, but rather making the decision to take your children out of school and begin home education. In my experience, learning about homeschooling was fairly straightforward and knowing the downside of public schooling was fairly intuitive, but taking my kids out of school was still a very challenging decision that took me about year to make. The biggest obstacles turned out to be that I was schooled myself and had a very hard time imagining not using public schools since they are everybody's default 'state of nature'. I also couldn't adequately develop empathy for my own children when it came to what they were enduring in public school and nor thought about what school would ultimately do to them. This book is to help inform the decision process to leave school and free your children to learn at home. What you do once you get those kids out of school is a topic for another book and luckily there are plenty. I chose the title "Rise Above School" because that's what children do when they opt out. The school and culture like to use the term "dropping out" to suggest that leaving school is a failure of the student somehow. We must abandon this victim language once and for all. School is not a nice place to succeed in, it is something that should be rejected, tossed to history's landfill and left to die. Ideally, we use the term "home education" instead of "homeschooling" because the later implies replicating "school" at home, which isn't desirable. Only school can be school. Instead, we want to foster intrinsic-inspired learning at home. This said, "homeschooling" is common vernacular and I use it interchangeably in this book to mean "home education." The initial basis of this book was several articles and podcasts I created at my blog site found at http: //www.fivehundredyears.org. As the articles came, common themes emerged and it seemed natural to put them together under one cover. As background, I've self-studied education, public schooling and home education for two to three years now. I unschool my three young children. I'm an entrepreneur and a husband. I'm an advocate for home education and ending public school. And I'm a radical for peace and prosperity. If you are new to home education ideas or new to even thinking about public school itself, I commend you for trying to learn more, regardless of what you decide. Despite education being the most important decision families ever make for their children, most people don't think about it for even five minutes. The choice you are making involves committing your children to 13 years of school, representing about 15,000 hours of work, all of which can set the direction of your children's entire lives. Put the time in to research, analyze and process this 15,000-hour whopper of a decision. Please.

When trauma and shame overwhelm us? When we feel empty and worthless despite our success and daily triumphs? We rise above our story. Before Karena Kilcoyne was a successful criminal defense attorney, trauma defined her early life. Her mother tried to give her away at birth. Her father went to a federal penitentiary when she was 12, leaving the family poverty-stricken and Karena to care for her siblings and her mentally unstable mother. After her mother died, she adopted her 9-year-old brother and graduated from law school at the age of 24. She fought for the freedom of others while imprisoning herself in self-doubt, depression, and anxiety. Existing only in survival mode, she repeatedly recounted the stories she’d written about herself: that she would never be enough, that she could never be happy. In Rise Above the Story, Karena shares with raw vulnerability how she rose above her stories of abandonment, worthlessness, and shame. She’ll help you let go of your own past by embracing every beautiful, imperfect piece of yourself—no matter what your story looks like. She’ll teach you how to: Acknowledge your story. Identify the story that’s limiting your life. Release your story. Discover how your story took over your life by unearthing your repressed fear and shame. Rise above your story. Explore how your hardships can serve you and learn how to finally love yourself unconditionally. Rising above your story will empower you to live the life of your dreams. Karena’s beautifully simple, yet powerful, formula offers emotional freedom and unfettered joy when you’re ready to embrace the vibrant, worthy, and lovable person you truly are. Your past doesn’t define you—you do. It’s time to rise above your story and live the authentic life you deserve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Beloved! I have become enormously impressed by our potential; therefore, I am compelled to connect our spirits for future advancement. My genuine concern for all women stems from the years of malicious abuses that I as well as many others had the misfortune of suffering. And that will ultimately continue on for many years to come, unless, we begin to reform ourselves. With all of our unfailing beauty and strengths; in our attempts to connect to one another the mass of our pretentious cries have gone unheard. So I am candidly coming to you with an olive branch (peace), holding myself partially responsible for not living up to my moral obligations as your sister. I am hoping that this material will empower our souls, minds, spirits and hearts enough to begin destroying walls of ignorance; walls that are enslaving our minds and causing a debauched separation. As babies in this mission I say let's advance ladies. Let's grow into a force to be appreciated, respected, and reckoned with. I challenge you to work with me to empower, uplift and reform. Be very mindful!! In order to do the aforementioned we must first work feverishly in leading by example as we're "Rising Above Our Emotions". To whom much is given much is expected and required! Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Experience the book that started the Quiet Movement and revolutionized how the world sees introverts—and how introverts see themselves—by offering validation, inclusion, and inspiration “Superbly researched, deeply insightful, and a fascinating read, Quiet is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to understand the gifts of the introverted half of the population.”—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY People • O: The Oprah Magazine • Christian Science Monitor • Inc. • Library Journal • Kirkus Reviews At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society. In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves. Download or read book Rise Above written by Steve Zakuani and published by Kirkdale Press. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss. Defeat. Hardship. Suffering. Pain. They're at the center of the experience of being human. And yet, these experiences can cripple—unless they result in strength. When a sudden accident resulted in multiple fractures to his leg and threatened to take him out of soccer permanently, Steve Zakuani faced his biggest challenge yet. The road to his soccer success hadn't merely involved athletic challenges; in the years leading up to his position with the Seattle Sounders, Zakuani had overcome an upbringing in one of London's roughest neighborhoods, battled personal apathy, and learned to not only walk but run after an accident that left doctors without hope for his future in soccer. He found renewed purpose through the influence of a mentor and, through that mentor, found his purpose in God's call on his life. Yet his early challenges began to look small after Zakuani suffered another injury that broke his leg—and, this time, threatened his career. That injury—and the 500 days of recovery before he returned to the field—forced him to grapple with who he was when his identity in soccer and his personal goals were taken out of his hands. This book, drawn from journals written during his recovery, gives readers a raw, honest look into Zakuanis story—and coach readers how to face tragedy with a positive mindset, how to set goals that are bigger than their adversity, how to remain hopeful in their darkest moments, and how to help others in their life overcome their own adversities. Includes a study guide to aid in personal reflection or group discussion

Transcending hate, envy, revenge, and other destructive emotions in order to reach a higher self, conveys to some the idea that this is of a spiritual experience more appropriate for mystics or saints than for ordinary people. However, this is not the case. This book will show that transcending does not require sainthood but, rather, a clear understanding of what transcending involves.
