Book Ripple on Stagnant Water

Download or read book Ripple on Stagnant Water written by Jieren Li and published by Merwinasia. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the small market town of Heaven's Turn on the Chengdu Plain, a simple-minded shopkeeper has married a beautiful village girl who is determined to rise above her station. Li Jieren's novel is populated with gangsters, prostitutes, farmers, dilettantes, bureaucrats and Christian converts, all drawn from the author's familiar acquaintance. While giving an incomparably vivid account of the lives of commoners, it illuminates a complex balance of power at the end of the last dynasty, when Western powers were clashing with imperial troops in far-off Peking, and the underground fraternities of this provincial backwater were chafing at the activities of foreign missionaries. Its relevance extends beyond the Qing dynasty and beyond China, to anywhere that cultures collide or people dream of better lives. Li Jieren brought to this portrayal of his native province the expertise of a local, the critical eye of a foreigner, and the sympathetic wit of a humanist. He has long been under-appreciated, in part because he mixed colloquial Sichuanese with literary Mandarin, and in part because his work is too uncompromising to fit easily into any ideological mold. This translation, based on the original 1935 edition, includes recent interviews with four residents of Heaven's Turn, giving modern perspectives on the town where the story takes place.

Book The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren

Download or read book The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren written by Kenny Kwok-kwan Ng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaged with the paradigms of cultural geography, local history, spatial politics, and everyday life, The Lost Geopoetic Horizon of Li Jieren unveils a Sichuan writer’s lifelong quest: an independent historical fiction writing project on Chengdu from the turn of the century through China’s 1911 Revolution. Kenny Kwok-kwan Ng's study illuminates the crisis of writing home in a globalized age by rescuing Li Jieren’s repeatedly revised but never finished river-novel series written from Republican to Communist China, struggling to liberate local memory from the national cum revolutionary currents. The book undercuts official historiography and rewrites Chinese literary history from the ground up by highlighting Li’s resilient geopoetics of writing that decenters the nation by adopting the place-based view of a distant province.

Download or read book Ripples of Battle written by Victor Davis Hanson and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2004-10-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of war refuse to remain local: they persist through the centuries, sometimes in unlikely ways far removed from the military arena. In Ripples of Battle, the acclaimed historian Victor Davis Hanson weaves wide-ranging military and cultural history with his unparalleled gift for battle narrative as he illuminates the centrality of war in the human experience. The Athenian defeat at Delium in 424 BC brought tactical innovations to infantry fighting; it also assured the influence of the philosophy of Socrates, who fought well in the battle. Nearly twenty-three hundred years later, the carnage at Shiloh and the death of the brilliant Southern strategist Albert Sidney Johnson inspired a sense of fateful tragedy that would endure and stymie Southern culture for decades. The Northern victory would also bolster the reputation of William Tecumseh Sherman, and inspire Lew Wallace to pen the classic Ben Hur. And, perhaps most resonant for our time, the agony of Okinawa spurred the Japanese toward state-sanctioned suicide missions, a tactic so uncompromising and subversive, it haunts our view of non-Western combatants to this day.

It is through her that lives begin to change, hope is found and lost, and love springs up where it is least expected.

Book Wavelet Analysis and Its Applications and Active Media Technology 2004

Wavelet theory has been employed in numerous fields and applications, such as signal and image processing, communication systems, biomedical imaging, radar, and air acoustics. Active media technology is concerned with the development of autonomous computational or physical entities capable of perceiving, reasoning, adapting, learning, cooperating, and delegating in a dynamic environment. This book captures the essence of the state of the art in wavelet analysis and its applications and active media technology. At the Congress, invited talks were delivered by distinguished researchers, namely Prof John Daugman of Cambridge University, UK; Prof Bruno Torresani of INRIA, France; Prof Victor Wickerhauser of Washington University, USA, Prof Ning Zhong of the Maebashi Institute of Technology, Japan; Prof John Yen of Pennsylvania State University, USA; and Prof Sankar K Pal of the Indian Statistical Institute, India.

Book The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes

Download or read book The Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes written by Ralph Bagnold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NATURE OF THE PROBLEM THIS book results from an attempt to explain on a basis of experimental physics some of the many strange phenomena produced by the natural movement of sand over the dry land of the Earth. The subject is but one aspect of a far wider problem which is still very imperfectly grasped-the transport of solid particles of any kind by fluids in general. Here the difficulty has been, and still is, that no one branch of science has attempted to deal with the problem as a whole, or to co-ordinate the vast amount of piecemeal work by students of different outlook in many unrelated fields. The carriage of silt by rivers has received a great deal of attention from engineers. But owing to the difficulties of direct measurement, to the expense and labour of conducting full-scale experiments, and to a failure to find agreement as to the basic quantities upon which a theoretical edifice may be built, the published results are far from satisfactory. Little has emerged except empirical formulae; and these are rarely capable of reliable application to conditions other than those under which they were evolved. The drifting of snow is of direct interest to transport authorities in many countries, to meteorologists engaged in the study of rainfall, to ski-runners and to mountaineers. Yet no means has been found whereby the precipitation can be gauged, or the rate of drift related to the strength of the wind.
