Book The Ripper Code

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Toughill
  • Publisher : The History Press

Download or read book The Ripper Code written by Thomas Toughill and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-05-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jack the Ripper an artist called Frank Miles? Toughill suggests that this former 'friend' of Oscar Wilde was indeed the killer, and that Wilde dropped hints about this in several of his works, most notably The Picture of Dorian Gray, which Wilde wrote in 1889, the year after the Ripper murders took place. In fascinating detail, the author argues that Wilde's story, that of a privileged man whose life of vice in the East End of London turns him into a murderer, is in fact a coded message about the Ripper's identity. However, The Ripper Code is not just a fascinating voyage through the writings of Oscar Wilde and others. It is also a striking example of original detective work. Here, as in his previous books, Toughill unveils stunning evidence from a hitherto untapped source and uses it to devastating effect in arguing his case. The result is a book which is as original as it is enthralling.

Book Jack the Ripper

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Hodgson
  • Publisher : Pneuma Springs Publishing
  • Release : 2011-08-26
  • ISBN : 1782281681
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Jack the Ripper written by Peter Hodgson and published by Pneuma Springs Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over a century ago a series of shocking mutilation murders took place in a squalid, overcrowded district of Victorian London. Five women fell victim to a man driven by rage and violent fantasy. The newspapers of the day gave him a chilling nickname, a name that evokes images of gas-lit foggy streets and a top-hatted sinister figure carrying a Gladstone bag. From the outset, the murderer attained almost mythical status merely by virtue of his name and his uncanny ability to avoid detection. The legend of Jack the Ripper was born. Peter Hodgson's detailed and entertaining overview of Ripper lore in fact, film and fiction analyses the fiend's awesome legacy. He explores the institutions and the individuals: the Jewish community and their rituals with meat, the scandal-prone royal family, the Victorian police and their simplistic methods of investigation, the streetwalkers and their trade. This book compares the fiction with the reality of those ghastly events, and clearly shows how the real killer has been transformed into a creature of the mind-the 'other' Jack the Ripper. Examination of the victims' mutilations reveals the true nature of 'Jack's' grotesque fantasies. This aspect-coupled with his elementary anatomical knowledge-is used in conjunction with the FBI's appraisal of the case to construct a unique psychological profile. From the long list of candidates the author reveals his prime suspect for the role of the world's most infamous serial killer.

Book Ancient West African Women Toppled Cornerstones

Download or read book Ancient West African Women Toppled Cornerstones written by Christiana Oware Knudsen and published by Pneuma Springs Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the 9th and the 19th centuries was a dark period in the history of West African Women. The effect of this dark period continues today, in part, in the form of persistent gender inequalities. Prior to this period, ancient West African women were empowered to the point that they effectively organised their own societies in ways that helped complement their interaction with men. In those instances, matriarchal inheritance systems ruled. The phenomenon of females ruling societies was based on the basic acknowledgement that all men and women, great or humble, emerged into this world from the womb of a woman. However, these matrilineal cultures were gradually destroyed by the arrival of, first, Islam, then the North Atlantic chattel slave trade, colonisation and, finally, Christianity. Slave trading was taking place across the world, but chattel slavery was first introduced in West Africa by a number of Western European countries. Ancient West African Women is a short, crisp book which systematically explains how women in ancient West African tribes migrated from the Nile Valley in Egypt westwards to an area south of the Sahara, which we now know as West Africa. The book also polemically explores the lasting impact of chattel slave trading, colonization, Christianization and Islamization on the standing of West African women. DI Moat and his assistant DS Stockwell follow one false lead after another in an exasperating investigation that seems to be getting nowhere: a gypsy caravan, an old murder in Kansas, the hurried will of a dying man, a golf-course green and an unfinished catalogue of Alkan’s works – none of it seems to make sense.
