Known as the Saratoga of the West, on account of the medicinal springs which it possesses, Manitou in reality is far superior in attractiveness to its namesake. It lies within easy reach of Nature 5 grandeurs, and the different rides and rambles are full of surprises and delights. A narrow trail leads by steep grades to the summit of Pike' 5 Peak, following all the whilethe banks of a mountain stream, and affording extended views, through clefts in the range, of the cloud-patched plains beyond. From the snow-covered top of this grand peak, Colorado is spread out at the observer's feet in all its harmon ious confusion. Mountains, plains, parks, rivers and lakes meet the eye at every turn, and the sight is one to linger in one's memory forever. Another pathway, the Ute Pass, extends to Manitou Park, where a mountain-hemmed valley, watered by a twisting stream, reposes in the midst of odorous forests. Near the hotels is Williams Canon, a red-rock gorge worn by the waters long ago, and containing in one side of its high walls the mysterious Cave of the Winds. The hundred or more chambers of this cave are filled with stalactites and stal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Along the Rio Grande Classic Reprint

Download or read book Along the Rio Grande Classic Reprint written by Tracy Hammond Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Rio Grande To gather material for this book the author wan dered in July and August, 1916, along the Rio Grande as a warless war correspondent. Disappointed in the absence of sanguinary battles, he turned his attention to the less bloodthirsty inhabitants and the country in which they lived, and felt it had been worth the journey. What he has said concerning them was written hastily from day to day for the New York Morning Tele graph, to which he is indebted for the permission to reprint it. He does not offer this book for literary merits, nor has he any message to convey. For this he apologizes. He has described conditions only as he found them and persons whom he has met, without coloring to suit a purpose. Book Forests and Snow Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forests and Snow Classic Reprint written by Louis George Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Snow The intimate connection between the melting snow banks of the mountains and the agricultural prosperity of Colorado is too evident to those acquainted with the conditions of the State to need discussion, for most of the water which carries fertility to the fields and farms comes from the white-capped mountains; but even among those most interested in the agriculture of the State there have been some who have had a question as to the extent to which the forests were useful. Some have even advocated their destruction, under the supposition that the water supply would be increased. While it is not thought by the writer that the forests materially affect the rainfall in our Colorado mountains, their influence as a pro teeting cover for the snow and in saving it from premature melting and the effect of winds, which increase the evaporation, is an important function. Without intending to enter upon a discussion of the question at this time, this bulletin is more especially intended to bring out some of the relations of the forests to our water supply, which have become evident in our study of one of the typical irrigation streams, and also to present some of them pictorially, in such form as to help the reader draw conclusions for himself.
