Book Rio Blanco Massive Hydraulic Fracture Well RB MHF 3 Final Report

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rio Blanco Massive Hydraulic Fracturing Project was fielded in 1974 as a joint Industry/ERDA demonstration to test the relative effectiveness of MHF in the same formations that were stimulated by the Rio Blanco nuclear fracturing experiment. The project is essentially a companion effort to and a continuation of the preceding nuclear stimulation project, which took place in May, 1973. The well was fractured a total of four times, twice in the Upper Mesaverde and twice in the Fort Union. A fifth zone in the Upper Mesaverde was extensively tested but abandoned as being of insufficient quality for fracturing. In the four treatments, none appears to have fractured laterally as designed. In the Fort Union and Mesaverde each well must produce from numerous sand lenses, the lateral extent of which appears to be limited.

Book Demonstration of Massive Hydraulic Fracturing Piceance Basin Rio Blanco County Colorado

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstration of massive fracturing to provide gas production from tight gas sands in the Piceance Basin was the objective of this jointly funded Mobil DOE project. This effort has been at least partially successful. The uppermost interval fractured, the Ohio Creek formation at 7324 to 7476 ft, appears to be commercially viable. The remaining sequence to total depth of 10,800 ft may also be commercially attractive, depending on fractured well costs, gas prices and the risk of failure to achieve production capacity equal to, or greater than, that achieved in the present well. Prior work was performed by Mobil in the Brush Creek Unit, Mesa County, Colorado. One well, Brush Creek 1-25, was drilled to 10,330 ft and given two massive fracturing treatments before the well was plugged and abandoned as noncommercial. It was concluded that formation permeability was too low to justify additional work in the Brush Creek Unit. Piceance Creek well F31-13G was drilled to 10,800 ft. Nine zones were tested in the Mesaverde and Ohio Creek formations between 7324 to 10,680 ft. Six massive fracturing treatments were performed covering 7 of the 9 intervals. Average first-year flow potential of the well is estimated at 2.9 MMCF/day with 1.1 MMCF/day of this amount attributed to the uppermost zone.

Book Rio Blanco Massive Hydraulic Fracture

Book excerpt: The Piceance Basin in Colorado contains an estimated 600 trillion cu ft of natural gas in place. Both the Rulison and Rio Blanco events have been detonated to determine the feasibility of nuclear fracturing to stimulate natural gas production in this basin. A demonstration program to test the relative effectiveness of massive hydraulic fracturing (MHF) to achieve natural gas production stimulation from the same gas reservoir is presented. Details are included on MHF design parameters, including surface and subsurface equipment, pumping requirements, evaluation of fracturing results, and all associated test programs; site characteristics and preparation; proposal for gas utilization program; environmental surveillance and comparative analysis of environmental aspects of MHF and nuclear stimulation; gas delivery estimates; project administration; and costs and scheduling.

Book excerpt: A recent Federal Power Commission feasibility study assessed the possibility of economically producing gas from three Rocky Mountain basins. These basins have potentially productive horizons 2,000 to 4,000 feet thick containing an estimated total of 600 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. However, the producing sands are of such low permeability and heterogeneity that conventional methods have failed to develop these basins economically. The Natural Gas Technology Task Force, responsible for preparing the referenced feasibility study, determined that, if effective well stimulation methods for these basins can be developed, it might be possible to recover 40 to 50 percent of the gas in place. The Task Force pointed out two possible underground fracturing methods: Nuclear explosive fracturing, and massive hydraulic fracturing. They argued that once technical viability has been demonstrated, and with adequate economic incentives, there should be no reason why one or even both of these approaches could not be employed, thus making a major contribution toward correcting the energy deficiency of the Nation. A joint Government-industry demonstration program has been proposed to test the relative effectiveness of massive hydraulic fracturing of the same formation and producing horizons that were stimulated by the Rio Blanco nuclear project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is an MHF of a previously untreated Mesaverde interval in a well in northwest Colorado. The rocks involved may have been deposited during a marine invasion of long-continued, swamp environments. If so, they would have possessed superior primary reservoir properties. The logging program, identical to those used in the nearby Rio Blanco Nuclear and MHF Project wells, supplied contradictory information. The frac could furnish better understanding of the log suite, better parameters for pre-frac judgments of productive potential and further proof of the commercial capabilities of the formation. The frac job was performed as designed. A total of 775,000 lbs of sand in a total of 276,000 gallons of gelled water (YF4PSD) were injected. The injection pressures ranged from 2,000 to 1,300 psig at rates from 37 to 10 BPM. During the post-frac clean up, 30% of the frac fluid flowed back in 36 hours. Following eight days of swabbing and a total fluid recovery of 46%, the well began continuous flow, which within an additional three days brought total fluid recovery to 70%. Then gas flow increased from gas-cut water to 800 MSCF/D and declined to about 200 MSCF/D within 22 days. After over four months of production and cumulative frac fluid recovery of 82%, the gas rate appears to stabilize at around 130 MSCF/D with about 7 BF/D which contain over 50% oil. The post-frac to pre-frac production ratio is 2:1. It is concluded that revision of interpretive methods and/or logging programs is required if consistency in selecting zones most productive of gas and most receptive to stimulation is to be achieved. Injecting large volumes into short vertical intervals appears presently economically unattractive in this area. Properly designed moderate volume multiple fracs may achieve commercial deliverability.
