Book Illuminance

Download or read book Illuminance written by Rinko Kawauchi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, Rinko Kawauchi launched her career with the simultaneous publication of three astonishing photobooksUtatane, Hanabi, and Hanakofirmly establishing her as one of the most innovative newcomers to contemporary photography, not just in Japan, but across the globe. In the years that followed, she published other notable monographs, including Aila (2004), The Eyes, the Ears (2005), and Semear (2007). And now, ten years after her precipitous entry onto the international stage, Aperture is delighted to publish Illuminance, the latest volume of Kawauchis work and the first to be published outside of Japan. Kawauchis work has frequently been lauded for its nuanced palette and offhand compositional mastery, as well as her ability to incite wonder via careful attention to tiny gestures and the incidental details of her everyday environment. In Illuminance, Kawauchi continues her exploration of the extraordinary in the mundane, drawn to the fundamental cycles of life and the seemingly inadvertent, fractal-like organization of the natural world into formal patterns. This impressive compilation of previously unpublished images is proof of Kawauchis unparalleled, unique sensibility and her on-going appeal to the lovers of photography.

Book excerpt: Punctuating the series are images of Buddhist rituals and other religious ceremonies-a suggestion of other means by which humankind has traditionally attempted to transcend time and memory. The book is designed by award-winning Dutch designer Hans Gremmen, who brings a sense of the monumental and the mysterious to the design, including a seductive origami binding. The series is Kawauchi's first to be fully realized with a medium-format, 4 x 5 camera, instead of the 2- -inch format for which she has become best known. And while her work has frequently touched on the ephemeral, often using tiny details as a point of access to the larger cycles of life, with this new body of work, she purposely concentrates on the elemental and universal."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: With every new publication, acclaimed Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi (born 1972) reimagines the terms of both her own work and the photo book as a form, while retaining her special capacity to depict the world with a palpable delight and awe. Sheets continues this adventurous trajectory. It consists of contact sheets from a variety of Kawauchi's previous projects, re-edited here as a cinematic narrative or scrapbook, with gatefolds interspersed throughout to punctuate the strongly rhythmic character created by the contact sheets' black frames. At once emphatically ordinary and lusciously transcendent, these color images of veiny palm fronds and water droplets on lotus leaves, waterfalls, birds, butterflies, open skies, domestic activities, bleached-out beach scenes and street lamps aglow at night celebrate ephemeral luminosity and everyday epiphanies. Sequenced by Kawauchi and publisher/editor Misha Kominek, and designed by Kominek and Claudia Ott, this hardcover volume opens up a new dimension on Kawauchi's much-admired oeuvre.

Book Rinko Kawauchi

Book excerpt: Murmuration presents a new Photoworks commission by acclaimed Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi for the Brighton Photo Biennial 2010, New Documents, curated by Martin Parr. Invited to make new work about Brighton, Kawauchi was immediately drawn to the spectacle of flocking starlings at Brighton Pier. Here during the winter months at dusk, the birds gather in tens of thousands, wheeling around to create a mesmerizing cloud called a 'murmuration'. Kawauchi is fascinated by the ephemeral nature of this phenomenon and, continuing with the theme of the flock, she has also trailed groups of people through the city. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Strange and Familiar: Three Views of Brighton at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery, 2 October – 14 November 2010. Limited edition.

Book My Dakota

Download or read book My Dakota written by Rebecca Norris Webb and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2005, Rebecca Norris Webb set out to photograph her home state of South Dakota, a sparsely populated frontier state on the Great Plains with more buffalo, pronghorn, mule deer and prairie dogs than people. South Dakota is a land of powwows and rodeos, corn palaces and buffalo roundups; a harsh and beautiful landscape dominated by space, silence, brutal wind and extreme weather. The next year, however, everything changed for Norris Webb, when her brother died unexpectedly of heart failure. "For months," she writes in the introduction to this volume, "one of the few things that eased my unsettled heart was the landscape of South Dakota. For each of us, does loss have its own geography?" My Dakota is a small intimate book about the west and its weathers, and an elegy for a lost brother.

Book excerpt: "A game, a series of essays, an abstract visual storybook...all of the above? The design of Jason Fulford's third photobook is rigid and deliberate, while its meaning is flexible. 'The intention of this edit and layout,' Fulford explains, 'is to create as many relationships as possible between the pictures as well as the chapters. I like the idea of a meticulously planned-out event that remains unpredictable.' The work in RAISING FROGS FOR $ $ $ was selected from his personal archive, taken between 1997 and 2005 in various countries"--

Book Cy Twombly Photographs

Download or read book Cy Twombly Photographs written by Cy Twombly and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew Marks is pleased to announce his next exhibition will be Cy Twombly Photographs. The exhibition will consist of twenty-nine color photographs. This is the first time Twombly has exhibited work in this medium.Cy Twombly began experimenting with color photography in the early 1980s. About four years ago he started working with the master printers Michel and Jean-Francois Fresson at the Atelier Fresson in Savigny sur Orge, France. The Fresson technique is a unique photographic printing process carried on exclusively by the Fresson family since 1990. The photographs which result have an unusually rich surface and extraordinary, saturated colors over which the artist is able to maintain exceptional control. Fresson prints are the most permanent photographic color images made today. The subject matter of Twombly's photographs are flowers, trees and ancient Roman sculptures. The majority of the works in the exhibition have been put together by the artist into groups of five or six images. Theirs is similar to the way Twombly has presented his paintings and drawings in the past. While not as abstract as his work in other media, the photographs Twombly will show are close in feeling to his larger scale work and are important to an understanding of his subject matter and working methods. The last exhibition in New York consisting of entirely new work by Cy Twombly was held in 1982. -- Press Release (see link).

Book Transparencies

Download or read book Transparencies written by Stephen Shore and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Transparencies: Small Camera Works 1971-1979' offers an alternative account of one of the most fabled episodes in photographic history: the cross-country journeys that produced Stephen Shore's luminous new vision of the American landscape, 'Uncommon Places'. Along with his large-format camera, Shore also brought a 35mm Leica on his travels. The images made with it, on luminous colour slide film, are intimate, spontaneous and personal, while retaining Shore's studied formal sensitivity. In these entirely unseen photographs, a parallel iteration of an iconic vision emerges like a piece of music played in a new key. The vocabulary is familiar: highways and homes, phone boxes, fast food and sun-strewn parking lots. But the alternative format unmistakably re-envisions these subjects through distinct experiments with composition, attitude, and colour. Transparencies uncovers both a detail-oriented survey of the American landscape of the 1970s and a rigorous, imaginative exercise in form by an undisputed modern master. With an afterword by Britt Salvesen, curator at LACMA, titled 'Ordinary Speech: The Vernacular in Stephen Shore's Early 35mm Photography'.

Book Space Framed

Download or read book Space Framed written by Hugh Campbell and published by Lund Humphries Publishers Limited. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about how photography serves architecture, this book looks at how fine-art photographers frame constructed space? from cities to single anonymous rooms. It analyses various techniques used and reveals resonances and rhythms found in the photographs as they occur at different scales, times and settings. Photographs become vehicles for thinking about the co-existence between individuals and social groups and their surroundings spaces and settings in the city and the landscape. By considering questions of technique and practice on the one hand, and the formal and aesthetic qualities of photographs on the other, the book opens up new ways of looking at and thinking about architecture and how we relate to our environment.
