Book excerpt: Based on the award-winning PBS documentary series, Ring of Fire is this first-person account of the adventures of two English brothers as they explore the astonishingly rich cultures of the Indonesian archipelago. Their fascinating odyssey began in 1972 with a 2,500-mile voyage through the fabled Spice Islands, in search of the Greater Bird of Paradise. A decade of further exploration followed, during which the brothers lived among the Asmat cannibals of Papua and the healers of Bali, came face-to-face with the man-eating dragons of Komodo, and encountered the elusive dream wanderers of Borneo. Amid impenetrable rain forests, erupting volcanoes and startling natural beauty, the brothers have captured on film and in words the story of one of the most captivating and intriguing explorations ever made.

Book The Ring of Truth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wendy Doniger
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-04-03
  • ISBN : 0190267135
  • Pages : 425 pages

Download or read book The Ring of Truth written by Wendy Doniger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are sex and jewelry, particularly rings, so often connected? Why do rings continually appear in stories about marriage and adultery, love and betrayal, loss and recovery, identity and masquerade? What is the mythology that makes finger rings symbols of true (or, as the case may be, untrue) love? The cross-cultural distribution of the mythology of sexual rings is impressive--from ancient India and Greece through the Arab world to Shakespeare, Marie Antoinette, Wagner, nineteenth-century novels, Hollywood, and the De Beers advertising campaign that gave us the expression, "A Diamond is Forever." Each chapter of The Ring of Truth, like a charm on a charm bracelet, considers a different constellation of stories: stories about rings lost and found in fish; forgetful husbands and clever wives; treacherous royal necklaces; fake jewelry and real women; modern women's revolt against the hegemony of jewelry; and the clash between common sense and conventional narratives about rings. Herein lie signet rings, betrothal rings, and magic rings of invisibility or memory. The stories are linked by a common set of meanings, such as love symbolized by the circular and unbroken shape of the ring: infinite, constant, eternal--a meaning that the stories often prove tragically false. While most of the rings in the stories originally belonged to men, or were given to women by men, Wendy Doniger shows that it is the women who are important in these stories, as they are the ones who put the jewelry to work in the plots.

Book excerpt: Where We See Tragedy, God Sees Possibility . . . Living with the harsh realities of cerebral palsy, Ring faces impossible odds yet stumbles into an improbable life of inspiration and influence in the small, unassuming town of Liberty, Missouri, in the 1960s. As a teenage boy, Ring finds himself tragically orphaned and being shuffled about to various homes. Along this journey, he faces secret, unspeakable atrocities that eventually plunge him into the depths of depression and attempted suicide. But amid the harsh troubles of life, he encounters another boy his age named David, the son of a local pastor. Their unlikely friendship begins on the rocks, but eventually develops into something extraordinary and unique that alters the trajectory of both of their lives--and the whole town of Liberty--forever.

Book The Architecture of Hope

Download or read book The Architecture of Hope written by Douglas MacLeod and published by Wood Lake Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architect and educator Douglas MacLeod offers a stark and immediately compelling glimpse into the future,15 years hence, in which we can live and work together to build better communities for tomorrow. This insightful and intriguing book imagines the idea of cooperative communities where people can produce more energy than they use; purify more water than they pollute; grow more food than they consume; and recycle more waste than they produce, with technologies that already exist or that will be within our grasp in a few years. Most important of all, the people of the community own and profit from these resources. The Architecture of Hope depicts a way of living that is decentralized, re-localized, and regenerative. And possible. “Our communities are overpriced, poisonous, overcrowded, unhealthy, wasteful energy pigs – not because they have to be but because it suits the vested interests that build, operate, and control them ...” Strong words spoken by a character in The Architecture of Hope, Douglas MacLeod’s striking glimpse into the near future. And yet this is not, at its core, a work of fiction. So often the future we imagine is bleak. The environment, the quality of social engagement and cross-cultural relations, food security, education, work ... so much seems in decline. And, in fact, the future will be bleak, if we don’t change our ways of thinking. As one of the characters notes, “The big idea is that we could restore rather than destroy; we could produce rather than consume; and we could purify rather than pollute – not just the Earth but our bodies and minds as well.” While this scenario describes how we can use new technologies to achieve these goals, it emphasizes that, most of all, we need to change our thinking. It’s not that our communities can give us hope directly, but they can provide a scaffolding so that we can create full, meaningful and hopeful lives for ourselves, our families, and our neighbours.
