Book Advanced Pavement Design Finite Element Modeling for Rigid Pavement Joints Report 1 Background Investigation

Download or read book Advanced Pavement Design Finite Element Modeling for Rigid Pavement Joints Report 1 Background Investigation written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research project is to develop an analytical model for rigid pavement joints that can be implemented into advanced pavement design models. This report documents a background investigation including a comprehensive review of rigid pavement joint models with particular emphasis on their joint and foundation modeling capabilities. The major historical developments in airport rigid pavement design are discussed. Closed form solutions akin to those by Westergaard were derived in this study for the maximum responses on the unloaded side of a rigid pavement slab edge capable of a degree of load transfer. When used together with Westergaard's own closed form equations for the free edge problem, the formulae derived in this study constitute a complete solution of the edge load transfer problem, recognized over the years as a critical consideration in rigid pavement design. The newly derived solution is presented in convenient form for routine engineering application and is compared to earlier finite element data. The improvement in ease of application and precision is considerable.

Book Joint Spacing in Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Joint Spacing in Concrete Pavements written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of widespread disagreement about the desirability of expansion joints in concrete pavements, the Public Roads Administration (PRA) decided early in 1940 to sponsor cooperative experimental research projects in Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, California and Missouri. Design of the seven experimental sections in each state is described. The primary purpose of the experiments is to study the spacing of expansion joints in pavements with closely spaced contraction joints.

Book Design of Terminals for Rigid Pavements to Control End Movements

Download or read book Design of Terminals for Rigid Pavements to Control End Movements written by National Research Council (U.S.). Transportation Research Board. Committee on Rigid Pavement Design and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ends of continuously reinforced and jointed rigid pavements will experience considerable movement; if they are restrained, they will exert considerable force on the restraining mechanism. Structures or pavements that abut these pavements may be damaged unless provisions are made for their protection. There are two approaches to solving the problem. One is to accommodate the movement by providing sufficient space (joints) in which the end of the pavement may move. The other is to partially restrain the ends with some form of anchor system and to provide space to accommodate the reduced movement. Questionnaires revealed that, for CRCP, both procedures are used; anchor lugs may be used and preferred slightly over wide-flange beam joints. For jointed pavement, the predominant procedure used was to accommodate the movement by providing space for the end movement to occur.

Book Rigid Pavement Design Studies 1962

Download or read book Rigid Pavement Design Studies 1962 written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1 reports the results of research initiated to determine a method of measuring bond failure, to evaluate the effect of repetitive vertical loads in producing progressive bond failure from crack to crack in continuously-reinforced concrete pavements, and to determine the magnitude and distribution of bond stresses in the vicinity of cracks. Paper 2: Reviews some of the wide variety of concrete pavement designs highway building agencies in Great Britain and the countries of Western Europe use. Paper 3: Recently a new concept in the handling of terminal movement of concrete pavements adjacent to structures has been introduced employing terminal anchorages. Experience to date with these terminal anchorage systems is reported, together with their design basis.

Book Investigation of Deterioration of Joints in Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Investigation of Deterioration of Joints in Concrete Pavements written by Lawrence L. Sutter and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research was to assess the efficacy of various waterproofing sealers applied to pavement joints with respect to limiting water ingress. The measure of water ingress was the chloride concentration profile as measured by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. The fieldwork was conducted at the MnROAD facility. Cores were retrieved from pavements to assess the before condition. Various silane- and siloxane-based sealers were applied in 2013, and the pavements were exposed to service for two years. After two years, cores were retrieved. The chloride profiles for various pavement sites were compared before and after application of the sealer. No appreciable differences were noted. The lack of measured differences is attributed to the short time span allowed for ingress. The older pavements measured had a considerable degree of chloride ingress and, as such, small changes were difficult to detect. The newer pavement analyzed also showed no appreciable change, but it would be worth re-analyzing after more time has elapsed (e.g., two more years).
