Book excerpt: According to the authors, the doctrine of inerrancy has been standard, accepted teaching for more than 1,000 years. In 1978, the famous "Chicago Statement" on inerrancy was adopted by the Evangelical Theological Society, and for decades it has been the accepted conservative evangelical doctrine of the Scriptures. However, in recent years, some prominent evangelical authors have challenged this statement in their writings. Now eminent apologist and bestselling author Norman L. Geisler, who was one of the original drafters of the "Chicago Statement," and his coauthor, William C. Roach, present a defense of the traditional understanding of inerrancy for a new generation of Christians who are being assaulted with challenges to the nature of God, truth, and language. Pastors, students, and armchair theologians will appreciate this clear, reasoned response to the current crisis.

Book The Book of PSALMS Part One Chapters 1 through 50

Download or read book The Book of PSALMS Part One Chapters 1 through 50 written by Jeanne Gossett Halsey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David is probably the greatest example from the Old Testament of a true servant of God. Moses was great, but David's humility sets him apart and above. David was God-centered; that's the way he lived, thought, acted (mostly), sang. Today, with the occupation in our hearts by Holy Spirit, we too can be God-centered. Morning, noon and night, we can say like David: ""Lift up the Light of Your Countenance upon us, O LORD! You have put gladness in my heart, more than when their grain and new wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety."" (Psalm 4:6-8) Do you know why I think David was such a popular song-writer? Because the people knew they would be hearing the Voice of God through his songs.

Download or read book God Speaks for Himself written by Douglas Nelson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common question that is asked about God. If God exists as a person, what is he like? Let God speak for himself! Discover the ways of God disclosed in the Word of God—the Holy Bible. The Bible from beginning to end is an account of the ways of God. The inspired scriptures is God in his own words describing his ways—all of which are a reflection of his awesome, unchanging character. The Bible is God making his ways known by words he inspired to be written and by historical events recorded in the pages of Scripture whereby he has visibly expressed his character. God’s way is holiness, but God is also at one and the same time righteous, true, just, loving, gracious, merciful, and good. God’s intent is not only that we know these truths about him but that we also know God as a “person” we can worship, believe in, trust, love, and serve. The proof we want to know God is that we desire in good faith to reflect his ways in our daily lives in everything we think and say and do.

Book Psalms in the Early Modern World

Download or read book Psalms in the Early Modern World written by Linda Phyllis Austern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms in the Early Modern World is the first book to explore the use, interpretation, development, translation, and influence of the Psalms in the Atlantic world, 1400-1800. In the age of Reformation, when religious concerns drove political, social, cultural, economic, and scientific discourse, the Bible was the supreme document, and the Psalms were arguably its most important book. The Psalms played a central role in arbitrating the salient debates of the day, including but scarcely limited to the nature of power and the legitimacy of rule; the proper role and purpose of nations; the justification for holy war and the godliness of peace; and the relationship of individual and community to God. Contributors to the collection follow these debates around the Atlantic world, to pre- and post-Hispanic translators in Latin America, colonists in New England, mystics in Spain, the French court during the religious wars, and both Protestants and Catholics in England. Psalms in the Early Modern World showcases essays by scholars from literature, history, music, and religious studies, all of whom have expertise in the use and influence of Psalms in the early modern world. The collection reaches beyond national and confessional boundaries and to look at the ways in which Psalms touched nearly every person living in early modern Europe and any place in the world that Europeans took their cultural practices.

Book Expositions on the Book of Psalms

Download or read book Expositions on the Book of Psalms written by Saint Augustine of Hippo and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 1623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blessed is the man that hath not gone away in the counsel of the ungodly” (ver. 1). This is to be understood of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord Man. “Blessed is the man that hath not gone away in the counsel of the ungodly,” as “the man of earth did,” who consented to his wife deceived by the serpent, to the transgressing the commandment of God. “Nor stood in the way of sinners.” For He came indeed in the way of sinners, by being born as sinners are; but He “stood” not therein, for that the enticements of the world held Him not. “And hath not sat in the seat of pestilence.” He willed not an earthly kingdom, with pride, which is well taken for “the seat of pestilence;” for that there is hardly any one who is free from the love of rule, and craves not human glory. Book The Expositions On The Psalms

    Book Details:
  • Author : St. Augustine of Hippo
  • Publisher : Jazzybee Verlag
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 3849621030
  • Pages : 1489 pages

Download or read book The Expositions On The Psalms written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God’s people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic 4 mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. And though we must look to his Confessions for the full view of all his cravings after real good, and their ultimate satisfaction, yet throughout his works we have the benefit of the earnestness with which he sought to feed on the “sincere milk of the word.”
