Hence, this book intends to examine the legal and practical recognition, protection and enforcement of the right to invest in the securities industry in Tanzania as well as to determine the effectiveness of the mechanisms towards recognition, protection and enforcement of the right to invest in the securities. It is revealed in this book that securities investment is little known area to most people of Tanzania. It is known to some big companies and not individual persons which makes participation to the sector seem to be to it is right by the companies with large capital. However, to some extent the securities laws and institutions recognise, protect and enforce the right to invest in the securities industry in the country. Nevertheless, there are weaknesses within the laws and institutions in making sure the sector reveals its potentials and opportunities to all people in the country. The author makes recommendation such as provision of securities investment education to Tanzanians and few amendments to some laws such as sections 54(1), 135 (1) and 136 (1) of the Capital Markets and Securities Act to mention but few.

One response to the challenges of climate change and energy supply has been the development of crops to be used for biofuels. But, as this book shows, this can divert agricultural land from food production to energy crops, thus affecting food security, particularly in less developed countries. The author analyses the extent to which biofuels feedstocks fit within the national food security strategy, agro-export orientation, and rural development plans and policies of developing economies. Two case studies, from Tanzania in East Africa and Borneo in Malaysia, are considered in detail, using the non-edible crop of jatropha as an example of how compromises can be reached to balance food and energy goals as well as export markets. The author develops a novel integrated approach, the Institutional Feasibility Study, as the basis of her analysis. However, with intensified constraints on resources and environment, China should appropriately adjust its food security goals to ensure the basic self-sufficiency of cereals and rely more on global markets for non-cereal grain varieties. Looking to the future, China should establish a food security system that is efficient, open and sustainable through profound reform to increase its domestic food productivity, promote sustainable development of agriculture, and expand international cooperation in agriculture.

Stable market institutions, in particular, secure private property rights and democratically accountable governments that uphold the rule of law, are widely seen to be a pre-requisite for economic transformation in low income countries, yet over the last thirty years, economic growth and structural transformation has surged forward in a range of countries where market and state institutions have differed these ideals, as well as from each other. Turbulence and Order in Economic Development studies the role of the state in two such countries, examining the interplay between market liberalization, institutions, and the distribution of power in Tanzania and Vietnam. Tanzania and Vietnam were two of the poorest countries in the world in the early 1980s but over the last thirty years, both have experienced significant changes in the pace and character of economic development. While both countries experienced faster rates of GDP growth, their paths of economic transformation were very different as Vietnam experienced rapid poverty reduction associated with the expansion of manufacturing while Tanzania's path of industrialization was characterized by the rise of mining and a much slower pace of poverty reduction. Employing a political settlements approach, this book considers the comparative role of the state in driving economic transformation. In both countries, the experiences of socialism continued to shape the role of the state in the economy even after extensive market liberalization, however, the distribution of political and economic power was very different. This had important consequences for the overlapping role of the state in generating political order and in driving economic transformation. Turbulence and Order in Economic Development studies the formal and informal ways that the state influenced economic transformation through its role in public financial management, land and industrial policy.
