Book Dusty Objects in the Universe

Download or read book Dusty Objects in the Universe written by E. Bussoletti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid matter in space is crucial in accounting for many processes. In these last years a great improvement of the general knowledge of the problem has been possible due to the increase, in number and quality, of observations and of the laboratory efforts to simulate "cosmic" dust. Theoreticians have also given their contribution in solving some questions and in posing others. Continuing an effort started in 1987, the Astrophysical Groups operating in Naples th th have considered it useful to organize a Workshop in Capri from September 8 to 13 1989 in order to assess the state of the art in such an interesting field as that of "Dusty Objects in the Universe". The subject is, obviously, too wide to be discussed in detail. However, the presence of many experts in different areas provided an updated general picture. Laboratory work has been reviewed, as well as recent observations and theoretical interpretations which concern processes occurring in our Galaxy and in external galaxies. The Workshop gave to participants the unique opportunity of exchanging ideas and of discussing on different themes. In addition, the meeting has been enriched by the presentation of the major technological projects related to ongoing airborne and space mlSSlons. the aim of giving the state of the art about specific Invited papers were prepared with subjects; contributed papers and some selected poster papers presented, on the contrary, the various fields.

Book From Revolution to Revelation

Download or read book From Revolution to Revelation written by Tara Brabazon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Revolution to Revelation offers a new paradigm for Cultural Studies. Tara Brabazon explores our understanding of our own past and the collective past we share with others through popular culture. She investigates Generation X, the ’post-youth’ generation born between 1961 and 1981, and the popular cultural literacies that are the basis of this imagining community. She looks at the ways in which popular culture offers a vehicle for memory, providing the building blocks of identity - the politics and passion of life captured in an unforgettable song, an amazing nightclub, or an unexpected goal in extra time. For a fan, the joy and exhilaration is enough, but it is the task of cultural studies to understand why particular cultural forms survive the passage of time and space. Brabazon argues, with Lawrence Grossberg, that Cultural Studies is ’the Generation X of the academic world’. She tracks its journey away from Marxism and subcultural theory and looks at its future. In particular she explores the possibilities of popular memory studies in reclaiming and repairing the discipline of Cultural Studies - making it as relevant and as revelatory as in its revolutionary past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The left-field arts journal whose very name promises more to come delivers three issues this season. There arent too many places to find intelligent, passionate, and semi-serious writing about the past, present, and future of visual culture and beyond. Dot Dot Dot, the brilliant journal edited by Stuart Bailey and Peter Bilak, is one of the few we've found. Issues 12 and 13 of this acclaimed graphic design journal are united by a thematic preoccupation with issues of distribution and dispersion. Exploring a variety of themes, including networks, schools, libraries, and the U.S. Postal Service, issue 12 collects pieces on and around these subjects, while issue 13 demonstrates them and doubles as a school magazine for the abandoned Manifesta 6 School on the island of Cyprus. Contributors to issues 12 and 13 include David Reinfurt, Ian Svenonius, Katherine Gillieson, Alex Waterman, Ryan Gander, Alice Fisher, Stuart Baile, Louis Lthi, David Greene, Samantha Hardingham, John Morgan, Studio, Steve Rushton, Ryan Holmberg, Mark Owens, Seth Price, Dieter Roelstraete, Chris Evans, Rob Giampietro, Dmitri Siegel, Radim Pesko, and Will Holder. Issue 14pursues the various lines of pedagogy, cupid, and psyche. In short, each issue swallows its predecessor.

Book Fundamentals of Powder Diffraction and Structural Characterization of Materials Second Edition

Download or read book Fundamentals of Powder Diffraction and Structural Characterization of Materials Second Edition written by Vitalij Pecharsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A little over ?ve years have passed since the ?rst edition of this book appeared in print. Seems like an instant but also eternity, especially considering numerous developments in the hardware and software that have made it from the laboratory test beds into the real world of powder diffraction. This prompted a revision, which had to be beyond cosmetic limits. The book was, and remains focused on standard laboratory powder diffractometry. It is still meant to be used as a text for teaching students about the capabilities and limitations of the powder diffraction method. We also hope that it goes beyond a simple text, and therefore, is useful as a reference to practitioners of the technique. The original book had seven long chapters that may have made its use as a text - convenient. So the second edition is broken down into 25 shorter chapters. The ?rst ?fteen are concerned with the fundamentals of powder diffraction, which makes it much more logical, considering a typical 16-week long semester. The last ten ch- ters are concerned with practical examples of structure solution and re?nement, which were preserved from the ?rst edition and expanded by another example – R solving the crystal structure of Tylenol .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing scholarship on the cultural Cold War, focus has been persistently been fixed on superpowers and their actions, missing the important role played by individuals and organizations all over Europe during the Cold War years. This volume focuses on cultural diplomacy and artistic interaction between Eastern and Western Europe after 1945. It aims at providing an essentially European point of view on the cultural Cold War, providing fresh insight into little known connections and cooperation in different artistic fields. Chapters of the volume address photography and architecture, popular as well as classical music, theatre and film, and fine arts. By examining different actors ranging from individuals to organizations such as universities, the volume brings new perspective on the mechanisms and workings of the cultural Cold War. Finally, the volume estimates the pertinence of the Cold War and its influence in post-1991 world. The volume offers an overview on the role culture played in international politics, as well as its role in the Cold War more generally, through interesting examples and case studies.

Book The Architecture of Continuity

Download or read book The Architecture of Continuity written by Lars Spuybroek and published by V2_ publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "That buildings are made of elements doesn't mean that architecture should be based on elementarism; on the contrary, we should strive for an architecture of continuity that fuses tectonics with textile, abstraction with empathy, and matter with expressivity." This is the crux of the argument Lars Spuybroek makes in this book, the first fully theoretical account of his innovative work. The state of contemporary architecture is the product of a 150-year battle between the Polytechnique and Beaux-Arts schools of design, which has forced us into a stalemate between the radically opposed positions of high-tech and sculpturism. Spuybroek aims to do no less than mend this rift through rethinking technology as an extension of our feeling senses, materiality as the realm of activity and agency, and structure as the result of genesis. Building on Gottfried Semper's materialist theory of architecture, he takes us from a philosophy of technology to a surprisingly historical argumentation that constantly revives the words of John Ruskin, William Hogarth and Wilhelm Worringer. Alongside a number of essays, the book contains extensive conversations in which we witness him refining and sharpening his arguments ("We will see a merging of Art Nouveau and Bauhaus, where empathy has been liberated from manual labor and machines have been liberated from uniform repetition"). In a period of theoretical tranquility in architecture, this book takes a refreshing turn back to the basics, one in which tools, methodology and architectural aesthetics are recalibrated.
