Book excerpt: Brave Tsavo, the first Rhodesian Ridgeback dog, never dies. An African nature god blessed him with multiple lives, and he returns again and again as a boon to the people he loves. Follow Tsavo's heroic journey from the Dark Continent to the 9/11 disaster site to his life as a loyal shapeshifting companion who crosses the genetic line between man and animal. Colorful African mythology and my lifelong fondness for fantasy literature have inspired Ridgeback Tales. I am also convinced that dog-to-owner mental telepathy actually exists, because my own Ridgeback, Mister Brown, dictated these stories himself with unrelenting hound talk that coaxed me to write every day. When you finish the last story, you will ache for more. When that happens, take your own beloved dog for a walk and ask, "What do you think happens next?"

Book excerpt: Like their human friends, dogs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are smart, like Ma-Buku, a five-pound Chihuahua who squeaks her toy in perfect time with her owners drums. Some refuse to adhere to dog clichés, like four-year-old Elmer, who loves to chase a tennis ball but refuses to pick it up and bring it back, or six-year-old Barnabas, who can’t be bothered to chase cats but will bark vehemently at the wind. There are pretty dogs, heroic dogs, and dogs that are loyal, intuitive, or just plain strange, like Bocci, who goes into a trance when his owner’s pager goes off, and can only be "reset" by being picked up and put back down again. All make an appearance in this delightful collection of stories. Submitted by hundreds of real dog owners, these true tales of mutual love and loyalty affirm that there’s no better friend than a dog.

In this whimsical creation tale, God surveys the various dogs He has created, and, in ticking off their idiosyncracies, decides to try one more time in creating the perfect canine. But in making a dog that is as smart as it is beautiful, God sets the stage for a mishap that leads to unintended consequences. Taken more from imagination than personal experience, each story in the collection presents a man or woman in need of connection and sometimes salvation. There are tales of budding romance and young love. There are stories about long-term romances in need of rejuvenation. Love isnt just romantic, though; sometimes its familial, and sometimes, we need to feel closest to those who share our name. But it is all love, in its many, many incarnations. The characters of Telling Tales have no dark shadows waiting; these are stories with happy endings, intended to inspire and uplift. Loners leave their state of reclusion and join the human race. Romantic heroes win the day. We dream of moments like these, and if were lucky, well live a real life love story of our very own.

Book Canis Africanis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lance Van Sittert
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9004154191
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Canis Africanis written by Lance Van Sittert and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the dog in human society is the connecting thread that binds the essays in "Canis Africanis," each revealing a different part of the complex social history of southern Africa. The essays range widely from concerns over disease, bestiality, and social degradation through gambling on dogs to anxieties over social status reflected through breed classifications, and social rebellion through resisting the dog tax imposed by colonial authorities. With its focus on dogs in human history, this project is part of what has been termed the 'animal turn' in the social sciences, which investigates the spaces which animals inhabit in human society and the way in which animal and human lives interconnect, demonstrating how different human groups construct a range of identities for themselves (and for others) in terms of animals. So instead of conceiving of animals as merely constituents of ecological or agricultural systems, they can be comprehended through their role in human cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am already planning the next adventure. The wanderlust that infected me has no cure.' It all started in Fishguard in the mid-1970s when, aged fifteen, Martyn Howe and a friend set off on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path armed with big rucksacks, borrowed boots, a Primus stove and a pint of paraffin, and a thirst for adventure. After repeating the route almost thirty years later, Martyn was inspired to walk every National Trail in England and Wales, plus the four Long-Distance Routes (now among the Great Trails) in Scotland. His 3,000-mile journey included treks along the South West Coast Path, the Pennine Way, the Cotswold Way and the West Highland Way. He finally achieved his ambition in 2016 when he arrived in Cromer in Norfolk, only to set a new goal of walking the England and Wales Coast Paths and the Scottish National Trail. In Tales from the Big Trails, Martyn vividly describes the diverse landscapes, wildlife, culture and heritage he encounters around the British Isles, and the physical and mental health benefits he derives from walking. He also celebrates the people who enrich his travels, including fellow long-distance hikers, tourists discovering Britain's charm, farmers working the land, and the friendly and eccentric owners of hostels, campsites and B&Bs. And when he is asked 'Why do you do it?', the answer is as simple as placing one foot in front of the other: 'It makes me happy.'

Book Across the Lines

Download or read book Across the Lines written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume of ASNEL Papers covers a wide range of theoretical and thematic approaches to the subject of intertextuality. Intertextual relations between oral and written versions of literature, text and performance, as well as problems emerging from media transitions, regionally instructed forms of intertextuality, and the works of individual authors are equally dealt with. Intertextuality as both a creative and a critical practice frequently exposes the essential arbitrariness of literary and cultural manifestations that have become canonized. The transformation and transfer of meanings which accompanies any crossing between texts rests not least on the nature of the artistic corpus embodied in the general framework of historically and socially determined cultural traditions. Traditions, however, result from selective forms of perception; they are as much inventions as they are based on exclusion. Intertextuality leads to a constant reinforcement of tradition, while, at the same time, intertextual relations between the new literatures and other English-language literatures are all too obvious. Despite the inevitable impact of tradition, the new literatures tend to employ a dynamic reading of culture which fosters social process and transition, thus promoting transcultural rather than intercultural modes of communication. Writing and reading across borders becomes a dialogue which reveals both differences and similarities. More than a decolonizing form of deconstruction, intertextuality is a strategy for communicating meaning across cultural boundaries.
